Why this is a stupid hobby.
      #6178090 - 11/05/13 07:48 PM

The title is somewhat in jest of course. After about two years of inactivity I suddenly developed an interest in observing again and the rekindling of interest came with a long string of clear, moonless and low humidity nights that further spiked the interest.

So I then went out and bought some stuff to further enjoy the hobby and have suffered from nothing but overcast skies since. The latest cruel thing is the crystal clear all day only for a wall of clouds to roll in at darkness and destroy the whole night ordeal. This particular cruel event has occurred for three nights straight.

Tell me again why I got back into this, seems as frustrating as golf when you think about it.

Because "Even a light polluted sky is better than what's on television."

I feel you. I've grown a little more tolerant of the weather patterns here in New England, though I can't just yet get over my disdain for a bright moon ruining a perfectly good sky.

Bah! I know, it's just so frustrating to sit out long periods with cruddy skies.

I fell back into it hard for those seven nights and haven't had another one in over two weeks. I'm sure it will clear right around the full moon.

Sigh...
Yeah I feel your pain... the weather here has been so... borderline, almost clear... hazy, windy, murky.... I can see the stars, but they look awful through the scope. The one good night I had a just used binoculars because I was so tired after being sick last week.

If one's only contact with astronomy is through eyepiece time, then yeah, the weather can be a source of vexation. But the *hobby* of astronomy is not limited to a clear sky.

We are a ship of fools. But, nothing in my 70 years of living has come close to the joy of looking up at a night sky, and seeing the objects revealed as only a telescope can.

There sure seems to be a lot of us that ride/race bikes and enjoy astronomy. To an outsider I'd bet they'd never put a person in both hobbies. That other thread 'show your motorcycle' revealed a lot. One of my motorcycle hobbies is racing bikes on frozen lakes in the Winter. A thing it shares with astronomy is dependence on weather. A big difference is that a single bad weather day can affect a whole lot of track days and sometimes can trash a whole season. Fortunately, there is no correlation of bad days betweeen the two. Haven't found a way to mix the two hobbies.
