I admit it, I'm weak. After ignoring this all day I placed an order for a DSI Pro w/o filters and a DSI. My twin camera system has worked out so well I wouldn't mind having a spare set of cameras. This will also give me one Pro set up fo monochrome only and another set up for the filter slide and an extra slide to put specialty filters in.

I couldn't help it either - just ordered the DSI Pro. Should go well with the Atik filter wheel I received today. Now if my LRGB filters would come off backorder I will be set!

Oh bother... I'm not unhappy with my 350D, but $130? Would the Pro with a set of filters be an improvement? That's an awfully small chip, but I could use it with the 3.3 reducer I already have for the LX200 ...

I went down in chip size when I switched to the ST-10, and I'll never look back - but it wasn't so large a change as this would be. You would gain effective resolution by getting rid of the Bayer filters and interpolation - but at the very short focal lengths you'd be tempted to use to gain FOV you could be undersampling in a big way. One thing - it wouldn't cost much to find out whether you like it!

How would the DSI Pro perform with a 127mm Antares achro or a 80mm Apo?
I've been using a Canon 300D with decent results but have never had the opportunity to do the CCD imaging thing.
Thanks for your input

I think the DSI Pro with an 80mm APO would be a nice combo - that's how I intend to get started with it. It will give a nice FOV for things like the eagle nebula, horsehead, M27, and others. It's also a good intro to CCD imaging at a great price.

What would be best?...the DSI or DSI Pro?

Go for the Pro! Much more sensitive to go mono than the color version. The color version would be more simple to use if you are just getting started. The mono requires a filter wheel and filters to get the most out of it, so it's a little more complicated.

I use a DSI-C for autoguiding. Would the DSI Pro be worth getting in terms of its sensitivy so I would have more stars to guide on?

What a great deal! I'm using a Canon 350D now and I think the DSI-Pro will make a great compliment to it... plus I'll have one smoking autoguider. Way cool!

The Pro is more sensitive. Whether it's worth it depends on if you're having problem finding guide stars now. Only you can answer that.

The Pro is about 2.5 times as sensitive as the color DSI.

The flip-side of a small chip... to get a wide field you can use a small telescope! The smallest I regularly use is a pair of lenses from an old pair of 7x35 binoculars; one fitted with a DSI the other with a Pro....

One runs into oversampling fairly quickly, though. At 400mm focal length it's already over 4 arcseconds/pixel. The farther it goes below that the more detail is tossed away.

I ordered the DSI Pro with the filters for $229. I was thinking of getting the DSI Pro II. But this was too good of a deal to pass up. I have the Orion Starshoot DSI I. But I also wanted a monochrome CCD camera.

John; you're right, but I've used lenses as short as 28mm with my DSI (I haven't tried it with the Pro yet) and visually I'm happy with the results. The nice things about using short focal length SLR lenses is the field is relatively flat making it easy to assmble mosaics. Using 2x2 mosaics with my DSI is pretty standard and the results are very nice. A big reason I went ahead and ordered a pair of new cameras is that at this price I can afford to tinker with them.

Fun stuff.
