Need an afocal adapter for Canon S5
      #2536558 - 07/23/08 01:14 PM

I'm trying to help a friend find an adapter that will allow him to use his Canon S5 with eyepiece projection. So far my googling has been skunked. Any advise?

Try using Scopetronix's Camera Adapter wizard here. Only warning though, they went out of business as far as I could figure out, but they may be operating out of someone's house in my town...though I'm not sure. At any rate, just find the part you need from the wizard and order from a different source.

Thanks Stefan. Unfortunately the S5 isn't on the list in the wizard.

Oops, guess I read it as S50.

You could try searching for a universal t-adapter, set of three screws that can be secured around a lens in diameter from 1.5 to 2.5 inches or so. Scopetronix has them, but like I said I wouldn't order from them. But if you could find something similar...

Use CNC Parts Supply: cncsupplyinc.com. This is an active company which sells the same items (except for optical items) that Scopetronix was selling. I looked for you and the Canon S5 is listed under their "Digi-Kits" link.

See http://www.scopetronics.com/dtsystems.htm

Looks like STDT96 may work (with one caveat).

This does not include any large exit pupil eyepieces' (like Maxview 40mm) price tag.

Good luck!

P.S. old DSLR can be found for about $200. Just add a different perspective.

I wish he had a DSLR but he purchased a camera of his own choice mostly for terrestrial stuff. I'm hoping I can find a way to attach his camera so he can experiment.

I have an S3 IS (same lens) and I'll warn you that it won't be easy to do afocal photography with an S5. The issue is the location of the entrance pupil which is pretty deep inside the lens. I'm limited to a 2x Barlow + 40mm eyepiece, and either max wide or max long on the camera.

Thanks!

Useful real-life observation!

Recessed lens from camera's lens barrel's front surface is a big set-back for afocal.

Morale of the story: there are some digicams better designed for afocal and there are some ...

The lens isn't recessed, the entrance pupil is. The entrance pupil is a virtual, not physical, item whose location is dictated by the optical design of the lens.

Thanks guys. The CNC kit looked like a good option but I was already worried that finding focus would be a chore with this camera. Sounds like it may not be worth the effort and expense.

Finding focus is a snap. The trouble is massive vignetting on most eyepieces because you end up taking an image of the front of the eyepiece. Like I said, a 2x Barlow and a 40mm eyepiece work well for me. At max wide on the camera, I get the whole field of view (as a circle in the middle of the frame) and at max long I get a narrow, un-vignetted field of view.

What would happen if you had an adapter that simply placed the S5's lens at the proper location in the light path?

Then the front lens of the S5 would be inside the eyepiece.

Usually any afocal arrangement should be pre-validated the following way:

1a. during day light
1b. hand-held digicam toward eyepiece (take out rubber eyeguard as needed) as close as possible
1c. set digicam to max. optical zoom and focus to infinite (or macro autofocus) then adjust OTA's focus knob to verify if focus can be achieved.
1d. check if vignetting in max. optical zoom to see if it is acceptable; change the zoom from telephoto to wide-angle to see if that is still acceptable. Usually mid range would be the situation vignetting starts to be unacceptable
(small bright image circle with large black surrounding area.)
2. Repeat step 1d in low light situation.

Clear Skies!

Sorry Lee I should have been more specific. Obviously that wouldn't work. I've seen adapters that allow you to place the digital camera's lens down into the focuser (Assuming it will fit) and the lens acts to focus the light cone rather than an EP projecting into the lens. In other words, there wouldn't even be an EP involved in this set up.

Sheesh, so much hassle for a method that's second-best to start with. This is why I never even bothered with EP projection. By the time you add up the price of your digital camera, the eypepiece(s) you intend to use, and the projection adapter, you've probably equalled or exceeded the price of a used 350D and a 2" noise piece for it.

I don't think that's one of the options. EP projection is EP + no lens. Afocal is EP+lens. Prime focus is no EP + no lens. I don't think no EP + lens is a configuration that can be brought to focus. I just tried it and I couldn't bring anything to focus that way.

I have the Canon S3 and finding good afocal combinations is definately a challenge. Here are two afocal images. The 1st was taken through a 120ST and 25mm plossl. The second was taken through an 8SE and an Ultima-LX 17mm.
These were taken hand held.

I just remembered, there is a company that makes an adapter that mounts on the bayonet mount and goes out over the lens. It has 58mm threads on the end so that filters, ect, can be used.
The addrs is: Lensmateonline.com

Ron, thanks for the photos! Those are impressively sharp for being hand-held. I didn't even recommend this method to my friend because I was skeptical that a person could hold their hand steady enough, but obviously it can be done. Those are great.

I'm familiar with the lensmate adapters, but I couldn't figure out a way to adapt that 58mm thread to an eyepiece holder.

It takes a lot of patience to get those shots. My camera has image stability built in, which helps loads! Also the Moon being very bright. The first was taken at about 1/450 sec. The second was shot at 1/60 sec.
A good way to figure out the right combination is to set up in the daytime and try various terrestrial objects.
I,ve been thinking about getting Steady Pix from Orion. It clamps around the eyepiece and allows the camera to move in several different axis.
A step down ring could be used to match the threads on the T-ring. Here is the real problem: The objective lens on the camera has to touch or almost touch the eyepiece, to bring it to focus! I was right up against the rubber eye cup on the 25mm plossl.
