My first true LRGB attempt

I've consistently stayed with OSC imaging since most of my imaging opportunities are few and far between. I purchased this Quantix KAF6303E camera to add a layer of detail capturing Luminance data either with a Ha filter or an L filter... I had to try the full LRGB process to at least get a feel for it and learn the procedure. I've got a lot more to learn about this camera but for now I'll stick to narrow band with it.

The spikes on the brighter stars are blooming due to oversaturated pixels...The longest sub exposures were the L data at 35 seconds each. The R, G, and B filters were 20 seconds each.

only a couple of possibilities remain for taming the bloom. I might try using an LP filter, and I will try using the camera with the gain set to 1.

L = 45 X 35 seconds
R = 40 X 20 seconds
G = 40 X 20 seconds
B = 40 X 20 seconds

Sensor = KAF6303E NABG
QE = 68%
temp = -40 (actual temp)

Terry: They are 2" Astronomik Gen 2c.

I forgot to mention that the image is actually a 50% crop from the right side of the full frame. AT65EDQ scope. No calibration frames were used.

I was going to give it another shot tonight with the gain on the lowest setting but the sky wasn't cooperating. I set up my DSLR with the 180mm lens. lots of "oop's" tonight...

The next few nights are looking better. Hope it holds!

I still appreciate my first imaging attempts. I had a lot of fun doing them.

Thanks Jose. Ratio? No, after stacking in IP, All I did was process the individual stacks, combined the RGB in photoshop, then overlay the L as Lumonosity. everything was bin = 1 X 1. I almost left the L off due to the far worse bloom, but it adds so much detail that it would have been a high price leaving it off. MaximDL has a remove bloom tool that I may try to work with today, but it's rather tedious for 45 L subs

Very nice. 90% of the images of M42 I see are way over processed and sharpened. Yours looks just right.

Thank You! I try to let the strength or weakness of the data be the guide. If it starts getting noisy, I've gone too far. I've never been very happy with images that I've tried sharpening so I just leave it alone.

I used to shoot a lot with an ST-10; similar full frame NABG chip (though smaller). The de-bloom function Maxim/DL was very effective and easy nto use.

Thank You Jim! I've played it safe (not wanting to waste the clear sky) and used my AT65EDQ. It's not quite as wide as the AT66ED with the FR/FF, but that sensor sure takes in a lot more sky that my DSLR. I really want to hook up to my SCT or the RC with it.

The sesitivity is mind boggling with these sensors. I'm completely spoiled with the clean characteristics of this sensor. The blooming can be a bit of a frustration but I guess it's a small price for the actual time saved by "seemingly" collecting more with each sub. I had to get a lot more time in with substantially longer exposures using my DSLR to get this type of result. I just need to learn how to work inside that constraint. I will give the remove bloom function a try and see if I can clean it up enough to warrant an attempt at some longer subs. Sal suggested rotating the camera for some of the subs and let the stacking program see it as outliers, and cancel it. Can't do that with my current config, but I can work of the process.

Robert, I'm really excited to try out my ST-10XME in a few weeks. I also looked into some of the programs that deal with de-blooming. So far, the MaximDL plugin appears to be the 'best' from the people I polled on Astrobin. PI has an interesting technique for dealing with deblooming that involves rotating the camera 90-degrees and combining the entire stack... unfortunately I try to run everything remotely so this process doesn't quite work for me. But, if I was to by a rotator, I think it'd be very viable.

Great to see a blooming camera

You will love the QE and these 100% fill light gathering pixels! I wish I could try the rotator setup but the way I have it currently mounted for ballance and support on the AT65EDQ, I can't rotate. When I get a chance to get the AT6RC out, that will change.
