I'm trying to plan ahead to manage the gloom and doom as best as possible here. Hell hath no fury like a C14 shown to a wife who doesn't care for Astronomy. Just sayin'.

The day I got a new OTA I distracted the wife with some Jewelry

For me it was shoes and handbags.

Well, with a swap of existing equipment for the C-14 (assuming the C-14 isn't a pile of junk), there really isn't an initial cost and it would be very hard to pass up a deal like that. With my wife, I could explain it, and she would tell me to go for it. However, it sounds like yours might not be so understanding.

As for getting killed, is she strong enough to drop that OTA on you?

She's strong enough to feed me that OTA probably LOL.

I'm hoping the OTA is not a pile of junk but won't know for certain until Friday. The swap is one thing - I can justify that all day long... It's the massive expenses that will be trailing that OTA that might be the undoing - i.e. a heavier mount, plus all the other bits I still need to replace like my autoguider package, and misc hardware.

The real question is do you want to work at 3800mm focal length? That's galaxy and planetary nebula hunting territory with planets thrown in so if that's your target then your C14 will do it.

A carefully timed, strategically planned, significant domestic purchase might help smooth things over with the CFO. Just consider it part of the overhead.

You can alway's finance that AP 1200 goto mount with the house. But for 5k you can get an HD C14 with hyperstar and one of Celestrons 8300 chip cameras that would work.

Camerss I have covered already, fortunately. One less expense to tread through.

Michael,

It sure would be fun to do some planetary imaging with 3800mm native focal length, but I was envisioning something much more sinister primarily - like plopping a Hyperstar on this bad boy and working at 675mm focal length @ F/1.9 for DSOs.

John, Dwight - sick, sick thought processes, but I like it! LOL

ROTFLMAO - I "ALMOST" traded in for a hopped up version of a ZL1 a few weeks back. Weight lifting buddy of mine is a GM there and spotted me this rather unique car for a little bit to play in. Fortunately it was freezing cold out that week I took it for a drive. It reminded me that I'm moving to Colorado and that this car will have no traction for 600+ horses on RWD for a big chunk of the year... Sticking with my AWD for now, thanks. Gotta be rational at least somewhere in my decision making LOL.

Lol so what you really need is a Nissan GTR. 600 horses (4 seats to fit the family) and AWD for Colorado! See I'm lookin out for ya

As a piggyback scope you could add the new SV 100 Quad... has a nice FT focuser...

You guys are too much. Why stop there? Maybe I should just go pull a "small" loan out and buy that available plot up in NM Skies that hit the classifieds, with full dome and automation and a fork arm the size of my car?

In the interest of 'bracketing' the choices... maybe that should be the 'too much' bracket?

Why? It would be just fine if I subleased out space under the dome for a few piers with gear loaded up by you guys.
