Newbie Corner - Post your first astrophoto!...Pt-2
      #6009656 - 08/06/13 03:01 PM

The original thread has been archived, here is a link to the archived thread.

A little intro from Charlie:

Quote:

Hi Folks!

I know that I was excited beyond belief when I saw my very first astrophoto! Some of the feedback we have been getting lately has told us that there are a lot of you out there who want to share your excitement at getting your first real astrophotos "in the bag" but may feel a little "put off" by what some of your fellow beginners with a bit more experience are able to do. I would like to help you to overcome this by offering you a chance to post your very first astrophotos right here!

With that said - I'm also hoping that by posting your photos here, other "newbie" imagers can see what to expect from their initial attempts at astrophotography. This is very important - we need to show other "newbie" imagers that what they are getting as a brand new imager is very "normal" - the point here is not to be perfect, but instead to really show where you actually started from. In addition, I hope that you will use the images you post as a definitive "baseline" to measure your progress over time. You are only a "newbie" right now - at this point in time. With time and practice you will definitely improve. Show us your very first steps up the ladder!

It is extremely important to me to keep this thread a completely safe place to post, and so if you wish to participate, I ask that you follow a few simple rules:

1: Images posted here must be from a users "first" attempts at astrophotography. The photo must be an astrophoto taken within one month of the poster's very first attempt. Remember, this is not a contest - this is a chance to proudly and safely show off your initial attempts at astrophotography.

2: Images posted here must not be more than one month old when posted. Please do not post any astrophotos taken prior to one month before today's date. The purpose of this thread is to document "new" beginners ("newbies"). While I appreciate seeing "newbie" images from imagers who are now more experienced, that is not the purpose of this thread.

3: Images posted here must have been set up by the poster and taken with the poster's own gear. Please do not post images taken with a friend's CCD camera on their equipment in their permanent observatory. That is not representative of what the typical "newbie" can do. Please understand and observe the "spirit" of what we're trying to accomplish here.

4: PLEASE - post once, and only once in this thread! We want as many folks as possible to post their initial tries at astrophotography, but after that it really isn't your "first try" any more. Any multiple posts from a user will be deleted - please take note of this!

5: Images posted here must conform to the standard Cloudy Nights requirements for posting images. Specifically, your image must not be more than 800 pixels in width, and also must not be moe than 100,000 bytes in file size. I understand that as a "newbie" imager you may not even understand what this really means, or how to make certain that your images are in compliance. Image editing is a skill that "newbies" must eventually learn. To that end, I will intercept any images that do not conform to the rules and edit them to bring them into compliance, and I will contact you in order to find out how we can help you to be able to post "legal" images - we want you to contribute!

6: THIS THREAD IS FOR PHOTOS ONLY! PLEASE DO NOT POST COMMENTS ON THE PICTURES IN THIS THREAD! Any commentary posted in this thread will be deleted, no matter how nice it is. Now this does not mean that I'm wanting to be a killjoy about this - I can post a separate thread for comments if you would like for me to do so - just send me a Private Message to let me know if this is of interest to you.

Charlie

For you who are new to Astrophotography, please post your first images in this Pt-2 thread.

Well technically its been more than a month(almost 2) since my FIRST image... but only had about 4 cracks at it since due to bad weather... so I might throw my first effort at Saturn in here.

Taken with a 6se on a standard mount. Little to no experience with processing, but had a crack at it none the less.

Cheers,

Mare Crisium 326x, meade 26mm with baader 2.25x barlow and handheld afocal iphone4S. first relatively high mag photo with my first big scope, a lx200acf 8" from my backyard in the middle of Los Angeles... can't wait to take it to dark skies this weekend, woohoo!!

The best part is my mother in law has a ranch at 5400' in the south sierra with little light pollution, so ready for some serious astrophoto geekout sessions. Haven't even seen a DSO yet but already ordered a radial guider and some filters, I can hardly contain myself! Really a dream come true.

Oops, just saw this thread after I started my own: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6128601/page...

I have taken images of comets before (on film) and captured Comet PANSTARRS with the crescent moon, so technically this is not my very first image, but it is my first with the combination of a Pentax K-5ii and the O-GPS1 AstroTrack feature. See thread above for details.

I'll repost the JPEG here:

After showing the kids some objects through my "new" (2006) C14, I mounted a Canon 7D at the f/11 Cassegrain focus and took a few photos. I only spent 1 minute aligning the polar axis so I kept the exposures to only 30 seconds at ISO 6100 with no auto-guiding or any other guiding for that matter. The moon was exposed in 1/250 second at ISO 400. I didn't put a lot of effort into it and I was frankly surprised at the quality of the results. Next time, I'll see if I can step it up a notch. The globular cluster is M13 and the Nebula is M57, the ring nebula (like I have to even tell you guys.) Enjoy...
John

PS Hmm...to tell the truth these might actually be my set second astrophotos. I seem to recall shooting M42 back in the 60's on a cold winter night with film. I barely remember it and the equipment was so primitive that I'm not even sure it counts.

Hello everyone! These are my first two photos that I consider decent of the Orion Nebula. Last month my Dad gave me his older set of Orion telescopes (6" reflector and 120mm refractor) and Skyview Pro mount. The mount doesn't have the GoTo kit, so the photo is unguided. The mount was only polar aligned as best as I could get. Stacked in DSS and post-processed in Photoshop.

Comet Bennett 1969 new [Re: fishonkevin]
      #6195788 - 11/15/13 12:20 AM

I took this in 1969, with my first 35mm camera that my grandfather gave me, an old Kodak35 Rangefinder, from ~ 1947, the first 35mm camera manufactured in the USA, but a "special version" with a f3.5/ 51mm fixed lens.

I was in high school and built a piggy back mount to fit it on my 4.5" Tasco reflector, that I used as a manually driven guide scope, using a homemade reticule eyepiece made by taping two of my hairs at the bottom of the barrel and centering them on a OOF "bright" star somewhere in the cameras field of few.

10 min exposure, f3.5, 51mm, all manually driven. TRI-X pan, developed and printed in my darkroom under the basement stairs.

This is a scan from the album of prints that I still have with me.

The Comet is in Cassiopeia, nearing it's lower culmination, and the blob next to it, is the city water tower that was next to our yard.

After much calibrating, running PEC curves, more calibrating, aligning and finally waiting for weather to clear, I finally have a 'real' image out of my scope. Only have learned as far as CCD stack, so this was solely processed in that. Learning photoshop now to do some more processing.

First image ever. Captured 12/15/13. Celestron 130SLT, Orion Starshoot 5mp, ran through Registax.

Just learning all this imaging stuff so it's not the best but I like what I have so far.

My first moon picture! It was a gorgeous full moon, had to wait hours for the clouds to pass. Stacked in Lynkeos and processed in GIMP, as replacements for Registax+PS since I'm on my Mac. Around 200 frames out of 950, from my Galaxy S4 phone (30 second video)...indeed!

It's not great, but I was happy about it

Tonight, i'll be using my 11" scope to take a (hopefully) much better picture of it

Technically my second DSO photo but the first was so horrible it wasn't even worth a mention.

Horsehead and Flame Nebulae resized to the 200k limit.

The original size here (321KB)

15x180sec, no darks applied due to an error I'm still figuring out; hence the noise. Also it's over-processed a bit to bring out the colors.

Orion 80ED
Orion Starshoot Pro v2.0 OSC
iOptron iEQ45
Starshoot Autoguider + 50mm Magnificent Mini guidescope
Nebulosity 3
Guided with PHD
Orion 90° diagonal in the optical path.

Cropped and re-sized from the original as I don't have a field flattener yet.

I have a lot to learn for sure.

This is a single exposure, 30 seconds at ISO 1,600.

It was taken with a Celestron Omni XLT 150 Newtonian on the Omni CG4 mount with motors. The camera is a Pentax K7, processing in Lightroom and Photoshop.

The Omni is my first telescope and this photo was captured within 48 hours of the scope's delivery.

This is an unguided and unretouched photo with exception for sizing to meet post requirements. It is taken on a tripod unguided Canon T3 with a 300mm lens operating at f5.6, ISO-3200 shutter speed of 3.2 seconds.

I am quickly learning how to focus the cannon autoguided lenses to infinity.

Here's my first attempt. I'm not sure I had even one parameter right, and if I did, it was by accident. New to photography, new to my DSLR, new to astronomy... But, I did get a picture! Obviously, 30 sec exposures don't work well on a camera tripod, especially with a 55-200 kit lens, zoomed right in, so it "Looked bigger". I know that now!
I tried deep sky stacker, but it wouldn't stack the 5 exposures I got. It prompted me to change the star sensitivity. I am guessing it didn't like the fact that all my stars were streaks! This is a single, with one dark (still have no idea what all this means. I took a 30 sec exposure with the same camera settings, and the lens cap on)
In the words of Randy Quaid, "She's a beaut, Clark!"
Regards, Kyle

Tried my 50mm f1.8G lens this time, 2 second exposures, ISO 1600. 5 exposures, 5 darks. I would use the term "Processed", very loosely, as I must have looked like a goat staring at a Rolex, trying to figure out DSS. That said, I am happy with my second attempt, compared to the first!
Last one of mine for this thread, as it's intended to be first, not first twenty seven photos.

This is my first serious attempt at a target other than M42...mostly because I haven't figured out the masking and post-processing required to avoid the overblown Trapezium region.

Shot the Rosette Nebula 27-28 February:

- Four 10-minute subs
- Unmodded Canon 450D
- ZEQ25, tuned to Astronewb's instructions
- AT72ED w/ AT 0.8X focal reducer/field flattener
- Orion MMAG autoguiding setup

Stacked in Nebulosity with four 10-min darks, 40 bias frames, using Bad Pixel Mapping. Post-processed in PS Elements, with Astronomy Tools.

Hi Astronuts,
This is a bit intimidating from looking at first images which are spectacular. But a starting point is here. I struggled for a bit. Trying to use just my DSLR, then I picked up an Atik Titan color CCD and struggled even more. I haven't graduated to a wedge yet, so just an az/el fork mounted CPC925 XLT. Moon shots are straight through, no barlow. Saturn is a 2X barlow. There is a string, "Why astrophotography for beginners". And reasoning such as one will not reproduce images already captured etc. I taught myself to play guitar a couple of decades ago. I'm no Mark Nofler but it brings me great pleasure. So that's my answer. It applies to about everything I guess.
These are just stacked and wavelt processed, I used the color auto align so perfection is a long way off yet.

I'll keep working on it.
Cheers

Hi there.

This is my first ever post on Cloudynights. I'm a bit of a newbie, although I've owned a scope for several years now I've hardly used it.

I got into photography a couple of years ago and it eventually hit me that I could combine these two hobbies! I'm slowly building up my experience and equipment though I realize I have a long way to go and I'm forcing myself to build the experience before I build the equipment.

This isn't my first astrophoto but it's one of the first ones I'm happy with. I used my Canon T3i with a T-adapter attached to my 8-inch Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope used as prime lens.

I live in the Boston 'burbs under light-polluted skies so I want to focus (no pun intended) on Lunar and planetary photos first.

Cheers,

Jim

After some waiting, I got my first EQ mount and decided to try it out!

Decided to try out Vega, since it was high in the sky and very bright.

I've snapped some photos of eclipses with a tripod-mounted camera, and of Jupiter through my 80mm on an alt-az mount. But this is from the first set where I really put in some effort with a properly mounted telescope: The Moon a couple of days past 1st quarter, from my backyard in the San Francisco Bay Area.

AT106LE, 106mm f6.5 triplet + Baader VIP barlow.
Panasonic GX7, Micro 4/3 camera. ISO 400, 1/125.
Tweaked in Photoshop Elements.

I don't know if I count as a "newbie"... I am returning to astrophotography after a 30+ year hiatus. Back then it was with a film camera and hours in the darkroom.

I recently invested in an 8" Astro-Tech RC OTA and a Celestron VX GEM... My son and I are learning the new technology of computer controlled mounts and digital imaging - but it is fun and exciting. The other night we got the mount aligned well and took our first images with the AT8RC. Here is one of the Ring Nebula

I'm a hobby photog. I got a new (to me) DSLR. Didn't intend to get into astrophotography, but tried it and I LIKE! Original taken with Nikon D5100, Tokina 12-28mm (at 12mm), f/4, on a tripod. 50 10 second subs ISO 1600, with darks, bias, and flats. Stacked with DSS. Post in LR.

My widefield. Canon T3 18mm 50 second exposure at ISO-800 guided piggyback on my Orion 120ST with an Orion G3 drive, The photo is cropped to fit this forum, otherwise untouched and simply unfooled around with. This was taken from my street light filled driveway in the burbs.
