We have a thread in planetary about this, so I thought since the league has two (YES TWO )programs I would start a thread here about them. Post your observations, and when ya complete a program, let us know so we can celebrate with ya

Date: 8/02/06 Time: 20:44-20:54 CDT Seeing: Ant III Telescope: Celestron 11in SCT Location: Brookview Trail--Hoover AL Objects: Hadley Rille (Lunar II #53), Mt. Hadley (Lunar I), Montes Apennines (Lunar I), Rupes Recta (Lunar I)
Tonight the Hadley Rille was easily identified. The part of the rille that is south of the crater labeled C is easier then the part to the north toward Mt. Hadley and Mons Hadley Delta. The easier part of the rille is very nice at 127X (22mm Panoptic). The same area takes 200X (14mm XW) and the seeing at brief times allowed 280X (10mm XW). Moving to the northern part of the rille required 200X and steady seeing. The entire northern part of the rille was visible arching away from the Appennines. While in the area I was able to identify Mt Hadley and Mons Hadley Delta. I also located the area of the Apollo 15 landing site. Also tonight I was able to view Rupes Recta. It was incredible at 127X (22mm Panoptic). I even took the time to show it to the wife. She was less impressed then I.

Date: 8/03/06 Time: 20:40-21:00 CDT Seeing: Ant III/IV Telescope: Celestron 11in SCT Location: Brookview Trail--Hoover AL Objects: Kies Pi (Lunar II #24), Kies (Lunar II #23), Wolf (Lunar II #70), Mons Piton (Lunar I), Mons Pico (Lunar I)
Tonight I started off with hunting down Mons Piton and Mons Pico. These are easy features to find but a little tougher to identify since they do look similar and have similar names. Quickly referencing my Rukl moon atlas allowed me to identify these two features quickly.
Moving from there I went on and hunted down crater Wolf. Wolf is a flooded crater whose walls still emerge about the mare area. The crater is somewhat heart-shape with a square like shaped south end. The square shaped bottom is identified as B in Rukl’s and it states that it is a separate crater. Wolf is an interesting crater geologically but through the eyepiece is not really all that impressive to me. All observations of Wolf were done at 280X (10mm XW).
Next up would be the crater Kies. This crater is like Wolf in that it is flooded and all that is left is the crater’s walls. There is a little pointy spot at the south end of the crater and as a whole the whole southern wall is less flooded. Contrastingly, the northern wall however is in a couple areas completely flooded over and non existent. This feature to me is more interesting than crater Wolf. Lastly this crater is very close to Kies Pi the volcano. Observations of this feature were done at 200X (14mmXW) and 280X (10mm XW).
Lastly I observed Kies Pi. This feature appears to be a mound where something just kind of bubbled up to my eyes. When the seeing steadied I might have been able to see the dark spot that is the crater pit. This to me is the neatest feature of the night that I have looked at. This is an easy feature to find when you have the right sun angle and know where to look. But this would be an easy feature just to pass and miss if one were panning around. Kies Pi is close to the crater Kies which is acts as a signpost to finding Kies Pi. All observations of this feature we done at 200X (14mm XW).

My next entry might not be until after Labor Day!
Dang rainy season.
But not really...
In all seriousness, when I have a chance to complete the AL's original lunar club I'll come back to this thread and post a summary of the experience.

Great reports Preston! I truly enjoyed your descriptions, especially Kies Pi, a favorite dome to me for similar reasons.

I just logged the following Maria as naked eye objects:
Crisium
Fecunditatis
Serenitatis
Tranquillitatis
Nectaris
Frigoris
Nubium
I logged the following features through my scope:
Montes Alpes
Vallis Alpes
I'm slowly making progress.

I got Fra Mauro and Clavis last night. I had a heck of time confirming Fra Mauro since it was under a higher sun angle. Clavis was easy to indentify and confirm
The high clouds rolled in about 9:20 so that cut me short last night. I will try and finish the observations tonight.

Preston, When you say "finish the observations" do you mean to complete the program? Are you that close?

No just the day 10 observations. Lunar I is done by the day. I'm a good number of observations before finishing the program.

My first official observing program and it is making me run back and forth between books/maps and binos/scope. As I said - almost fun.

I only did a sketch of Jupiters moons last night. I'm taking tonight off. I will be out Tuesday night to get the objects for Day 14 on the Lunar I list.

I mentioned in another thread about trouble hunting down J Herschel. Well apparently after doing a google search this came up. http://www.shallowsky.com/moon/rukl02.html
http://www.perezmedia.net/beltofvenus/archives/000290.html
I thought J Herschel was one of the craterlets arround the crater Herschel in Rukls. Apparently this crater is on chart 2 of Rukls. I will let y'all know if this is in error. Hope this helps.

A quick check online gave me very different coordinates for Herchel and J. Herschel:
Herschel 5.7° S 2.1° W
J. Herschel 62° N 42° W
I need to be home at my desk to do more than that, but I don't believe the two are closely related.

Well I think J Herschel has another name, since theres a really nice sketch of it by Matt Looby in the forum now .
What confused me was the index in Rukls. I didn't see a J Herschel listed so I just assumed it was a companion crater to Herschel.

OK I went back through Rukls, J Herschel is in the index. Its under J Herschel, I figured it would be under Herschel, J, like a book author... I don't know why I thought though...
So just check out Rukl chart #2 for this feature.
