You might want to consider downloading a version of the Virtual Moon Atlas freeware. The ephemeris will help you plan for things like this, not to mention the wealth of info the authors included in the software.

I've not heard of the dome of lights (will look it up) and take some pictures 4 day moon next time. Here is one I took on the 6 day moon? I think it's 6 day, taken 3/7/14.

Taken with Panasonic FZ70 60X zoom, + extended zoom on tripod.

Another nice free program showing the moon's phases, along with a lot more information that you can print out on a monthly chart is NightCal.

does anyone have photos of the 4 day old moon showing the dome of lights ?

it's between gartner and Arnold in the area of kane. just off of Democritus

it is a dome of what looks like 5 lights in a round dome shape

Might you be referring to the ghost crater nestled between Gartner and Kane? Buried crater rim peaks can resemble a circle or half-circle (dome) of lights.

Attached is an image I took of the area about 10 years ago. As you can see, I'm definitely not an imager but the photos come in handy once in a while. Does anything look familiar, or is the labelled ghost crater too large to be what you saw?

If what you saw was smaller than my labelled ghost crater, check LAC chart 13 (Aristoteles). It shows uneven features nestled between Kane, Arnold and Democritus that might be what you saw.

And here's one taken during lunar sunset.
The libration wasn't too favorable, but the seeing was steadier.

To be perfectly honest Howard, it's extremely difficult to guess what you saw by looking at full-disc lunar images... more specific information would be very helpful.

For example:
1) How large was the 'dome of lights' compared to Gartner?
2) You mentioned a drawing - could you post it please?
3) When you saw the feature, what was the size of the fov?
4) I checked the GLR's lunar dome map, and the only actual lunar 'domes' in the area are two small ones inside the labelled ghost crater indicated on my image. This leads me to believe that you're not referring to an 'actual' lunar dome, but a lightplay phenomenon - would you agree with that?

Any additional info you supply might enable us to help identify what you saw. Thanks!!

thanks,ok,FOV melton-hercules north east moon.and the size was larger than gartner and democritus..to my view it looked like the area of kane ..the lights -3 on the terminator and 2 just beyond -equal to the space between the 3 on the terminator to make a total of 5 lights.hope this helps pinpoint the dome of lights..
