My refurb mount arrived today; looks good so far. Nothing missing and if it's been repacked they were neat about it. Has rev 31E in it. I set it up quickly indoors and did an "easy align" sanity check. Both alignment stars were in the right neighborhood. Any of these I've seen that worked to that extent turned out fine. I didn't go over it closely but saw no obvious cosmetic defects. Looks like a bargain to me.
I see another batch went up this morning. I wonder how many they will be running through the outlet store?

Hi John: I bought mine Saturday morning. I saw at least 20 of those mounts sold in leass than 24 hours! If what we get works, it's definitely a bargain. BTW, how long did it take to receve yours? Marco

Hi, Marco.
I ordered mine last Monday, so it took a week to arrive including ground shipping from CA to OH.

I just bought one from the outlet store. The good thing is I don't have to deal with my wife's fury for another week. I think I'm pretty *bleep* close to bust my astronomy budget for the year and it's only half way through the year. Hopefully this mount won't give me too much trouble.

The rings and dovetail plate that come with the EQ version of that scope would be perfect; maybe if you call Orion they can identify those items.

The 8" dovetail for SVP mount should fit the LXD mount. I just bought one. SVP dovetail.

Yes, I intended to use the 80ED on it. Depending on how things go, I may or may not want to hypertune it. If it does need to be hypertuned, I probably want to get some metal bearing so I can mount my 8" dob without worrying about wore out the bearing.

khrome, hypertune basically refers to clean, polish and regrease the gears so the mount has better precision and less backlash, not to mention longer life. Many people do that to other mounts as well such as CG5 and SVP, but there is a hypertune DVD and kit for LXD55 to make things more straight forward. You can go to LXD55.com to find out more about hypertune.

I got my refurb mount last Tuesday, so I could have GOTO for my Intes MK67 Deluxe Mak Cass...when I first got the mount, I could pretty much tell that it was a returned unit just thrown in a box.
Initial problems: 1. The equatorial head bottom would not fit into the casted tripod head piece - it was a bad casting. 2. One of the altitude adjustment screws was missing. I was really frustrated, because I couldn't even put the *bleep* thing together! I thought I would give Meade a chance to help. Resolution: I called Meade on Wednesday morning, and by Friday (I live about 50 miles from Meade) I received a brand new tripod head piece, and a brand new set of altitude adjustment screws. Everything went together perfectly. Score one for Meade tech support!
Second set of problems: 1. The motors seemed to run very rough, especially in R/A, and always slewed at max speed in Declination in one direction. 2. The declination motor cover was touching the declination axis, rubbing the mount when slewing. 2. The polar scope was hard to adjust. Resolution: I pulled off the motors, and inspected the worm positioning screws. One of the RA screws was so loose it was practically falling out. I rescrewed/adjusted the screws on both axes, until the motor mesh gears turned easily, and replaced the motors. Then, I adjusted the 4 allen head screws that position the declination motor cover. After doing this, and using the calibrate motors routine (that fixed the dec axis max speed problem) the slewing improved by about 1000%. I then pulled out the polar scope, and removed the torn up tape wrapped around the set screw area, and replaced the scope. The scope now seemed ready for initial prep.
Preparing for first use: 1. Adjust the polar scope - not too hard, I used a mountain top about 4 miles away. 2. Align OTA with mount - after adjusting polar scope, I used a .25mm shim (extracted from a spark plug gapper) in between the front of the dovetail bar and scope to point the scope to the same mountain top as the polar scope. 3. Replace tripod legs - I had already made a custom set of redwood legs/spreader for my Orion Sky View Deluxe mount (rock solid) that fit the LXD55 tripod head perfectly! 4. Train mount - easy
First light: I polar aligned, set to polar home position, and used the easy align option.
WOW! As I chose stars, double stars, and deep sky objects, all objects in all portions of the sky appeared in a 20mm eyepiece (90x - 0.58 degrees TFOV); better than I had dreamed for first use of a $242 mount (with a little elbow grease)!!!!!
Only remaining issues: When I tried to GOTO Jupiter, the Moon, and constellations, the telescope went completely the wrong direction in each case (Firmware version 26c) - does anyone know if this is a firmware issue? I will try to upgrade to the newest version to see if this corrects the problems.

You can now upgrade the Autostar firmware to support PEC on GEM type mounts. Download and install the latest firmware file from Meade.

I hope someone hurries up and does it. I've wondered whether a stock LXD55 has periodic errors smooth enough and small enough for PEC to be effective - but I'm too inefficient to make time to find out.

I'm definitely planning on using it with the Atlas conversion. I'm pretty sure that combination will be a good one!
On an aside, do you think that the PEC would have any benefits for an ETX in polar mode? I recently picked up an ETX 90 EC on Astromart (I just could not resist the price) thinking that it might be a workable grab and go/travel scope.

I like the "minimeade" nickname!
PEC isn't gonna make any difference in visual "grab-and-go" operation. It only cancels out periodic worm errors but after 8 minutes you are back where you began. Any slower tracking errors which result in the object drifting out of view over time will still be there.

I was actually thinking that I could try my hand at imaging some brighter nebula with the ETX and the SAC7, which also packs pretty small for travel. I saw a couple of shots taken with an ETX70, and that is what gave me the idea.
The biggest beneficiary should be the Atlas mount, though. I just can't expect too much out of the ETX, to be honest I was curious if PEC would even be any help at all for longer exposure work on that small (but longish) of a scope...

It'd be interesting to find out. I suspect (as I believe you do) that the combination of long focal length and less precise drive system is gonna create too much nonperiodic error for the PEC to make much difference.

The easiest way is to use a Vixen-style dovetail plate which mounts directly to the primary and corrector rings on the optical tube. They were used on the old Celestron G8 and on the current C8-S and C8-SGT. Hands On Optics has 'em.
Otherwise he'll need a set of tube rings, which will be more expensive and potentially less stable.
