AP3600 at WSP 09
      #2969230 - 03/07/09 09:09 AM Attachment (229 downloads)

Hi All,

Thought I would post a few pics of the new AP3600 from WSP this year. Joe had just received this from AP a couple weeks earlier and was anxious to try it out.

He will normally mount a 300 BRC on it but instead brought along a 'small' AP155 for the first field set up.

All I can say is it huge, RA weighs around 125 lbs, DEC is around 80 lbs. The saddle plate is really big, the pier is from a Meade Max Mount he ordered yet never got delivered.

Enjoy the pics.

Looks like AP needs to add a new line of heavier counterweights to go with the 3600.

Joe was not using the standard counter weight shaft, instead this was the shorter rear shaft that comes out of the back of the RA for use with very heavy loads at lower altitudes.

He did not need the long one for this small load, even though he has 4 x 30lbs of weights on it.

Now THAT'S a mount, but I'm sorry, that thing deserves at LEAST a 16" SC.

I almost bought a 3600 late last year. The size is shocking the first time you see it. But really, who didn't have the same reaction the first time they saw a 1200 or paramount?

There is something to be said about the motto "you can never over-mount a scope". This really is the last mount you will ever need to buy.

If you wanted to, you could mount a lounge chair to it, climb on and use the control box to leisurely scan the sky without moving your head. Now that would be livin

That 3600 would have held my heavy 14.5" F/6.6 Newt very soild i bet.

Crimony, that thing belongs in an observatory!! How long does it take to set up and be able to image? And what a lineup... kinda curious how my CG5 and Megrez would look in that line..

He does plan on putting it on a permanant pier in the near future.

As for setting it up, really no difference than my 1200 after the 125lb RA and set, and the DEC is put on. It has internal wire ways which is new so it took a few minutes to figure that out.

Looks like a happy crowd with a bunch of "just right" mounts. The biggest problem I've found with the AP-1200 is you don't spend any time on the forums asking questions or comparing results. They just get it done. Very boring.

You should find someone with a PST, TV60, etc., put it on the mount and take a picture.

Beautiful mount. Enjoy!

Regards, Marc

Isn't that true with all A-P mounts?

I was thinking that a Mach One would be fine for my C925 cat. Now I'm not so sure.

Awesome gear. Thanks for sharing.

Ron

Darn! Had I known that you were at the WSP I'd have made a point of saying hello! I dropped by your area a number of times to gawk at the 3600!

I don't know if it's the same mount, but in Astromart there's a picture of a 3600 with a Takahashi FS-60 mounted on it in the Astro-Physics forum. The scope was straining over that mount.

Why? Was the scope being used as a pier? I think something far more substantial than an FS-60 should be used as a pier for an AP3600GTO.

I know what you mean, Jerry! I used to do lots of reading and posting in an effort to get my GM-8 to accurately track with 25 pounds of imaging equipment. Since the Mach1 arrived, my tracking has been "ho-hum" boring.
