I have to thank George and Dave and John for their efforts in this.
After several long trips and a couple of trades I have been blessed with a NEW, UNUSED, Byers Series II mount. The mount was built in 1999 and has never had anything mounted on it, absolutely pristine, it is just GORGEOUS, a true work of art, thank you Ed Byers.
The pics show it alongside my AP-1200 for comparison.
When my obs ever gets finished the AP-1200 will have a TOA-130 and a FSQ-106 on it and the Byers will have a C-14 currently being modified with a Carbon Fiber tube, spectacular. I won't care if it rains, I will just sit and look at the artwork

Not sure how to answer your questions, not able to tell if you are pulling my leg or are serious.
Handle a C-14? Anything my grandson and I are able to lift onto it will be handled better than any AP, MI, Paramount or anything else, you will have to get a Byers Series III (for $90,000) to handle more. BTW, there is a real bargain on Astromart right now for the makings of a Series III, once in a lifetime opportunity.
As far as the EQ-4 question, my suggestion is to re-read the post

BTW, Ed Byers does sell the Series III for $90,000 but Dave Radosevitch on his ad on Astromart will build one for $65,000, now that would be a mount to show off.

Hi Gary,
Definately not portable, weighs around 135# maybe a bit more, the base plate is 9"x16". I looked to see if I had a pic of the pier that I will initially put it on but not one, will get one tomorrow in the daylight. I have two choices, a new Byers Newtonian "tripod" that I got with the mount, really slick but low for a C-14, or my "portable pallet pier", portable with the use of a handtruck.
And Charlie, no VW's but a Takahashi FCT-200 would sure be nice but at 137# I would have to get Dave to make me that Series III (dream stuff) and then I would really have to get Gary's crane.

here is a pic of Ed Byers Newtonian tripod. Havn't decided which to use, there is a 7" difference in height, I really like this pier but it may be too short for standing and too tall for sitting, will just have to see.

Thanks Jimmy, your post reminded me that the Byers tripod was made for an Astrola. I think that has to be my next search project, the tripod, S2 and an Astrola would be a perfect combination.

Wow, I think you finally found a way to make binocular viewing comfortable. All you need to do is attach a lawn chair to the mounting plate and strap yourself into it somehow.

You lucky dog! You can mount your scopes on a VW Beetle and mount it to a Series II. Byers went out of his way to use high torque motors from everything I've seen thus far, which is just icing on the cake.

I can tell you havn't read my post in the Observatory forum, as I explained over there it's all just like buying Neopolitan Ice Cream, my choice, I never know whether I will want Chocolate, Vanilla or Strawberry so I get all three at the same time. Just like mounts so I decided on small, medium and large, a Tak EM-200 Temma, an AP-1200 and the Byers S2, that way I can just flit between them as the mood strikes me. Actually I like the hardware as much as the viewing, I use them all for my artwork. Sorry I'm not more accomodating.

Seriously, I never dreamed that I would generate this much interest, it has really been fun for me and I want to thank everyone that has looked and posted comments.
BTW, I think I have figured out a way that I will be able to handle the pallet and the mount by myself and I am going to the Winter Star Party in Feb and I hope to be able to bring it all and set it up for viewing. I won't know any of you but if you are there and come by and say hello I will show you the unit in person. There shouldn't be very many attendees with Red Ford pickups with Washington State plates. Hope to see all of you there.

Richard....you have to remember that most of the guys in each section, be it Cats&Casses or CCD Imaging all have a common thread, and that is mounts. Show a unique mount or one that can carry an enormous load, and your's qualifies on both accounts, and you generate INTEREST. I check this thread everytime I'm here.

About 15 years ago, I traded with Ed Byers for a nearly complete mount "equivalent in capacity to the Series II". It uses pillow blocks for the RA axis. The gearset is 11.xx inches. There is a polar alignment scope. The Dec assembly looks just like the Series II, but I have not painted the aluminum. There are several counterweights. The welded aluminum tripod stand is the same as shown in your photo, and he painted it and included the Byers nameplate, as on yours. It has fine adjustment for polar azimuth alignment.
Lacking are the two sideplates, because the lattitude of the observer was not known. The design has limited lat. adjustment, unlike the continuous adjustment on the Series II. A rotary table or CNC routine could cut short curved slots, or one could use plain holes for one or more locations. I was to make the sideplates, but have not done so. I need portability, and that mount, and whatever it might support, are too heavy for enjoyable portability. I do not have any remaining parking space for the trailer which would be required, nor a pallet jack.
There are Hurst ac motors, and a drive. Go-To retrofits for Series II and this one are available from Germany.
I was a long-time night school machinist, but became involved with other things. I now have a SouthBend drill press, a 12 inch disc sander, a pedestal mounted grinder-polisher, and a chopsaw with a non-ferrous cutting blade. I sold a milling machine, for which I lacked space, and did not really need, as I had access to a big shop, and probably will again next year.
I want to sell the mount, but the machine work would need to be subcontracted. The straightforward approach is to sell the mount and let the customer make or have made, the side plates. I have the Byers drawing of his side plates , from pre-Series II days.
I took digital photos , but the file sizes are too large for this website. I shall retake those views .
