Just wondering...How many telescope mounts have you gone through?
Me:
1)Venture 114mm eq mount -It broke in 2 days!!! Returned it.
2)Meade LXD55+10"S/N -Possibly worst combo in the market! Sold it.
3)Celestron CG-5 non goto -Very stable platform. Great!
4)Synta EQ-5 -I loved the all white color but it was too noisy. Sold it.
5)Losmandy G-11 -World class instrument!
6)TV Gibralter -Very good.
7)Bogen/Manfrotto 501 head -My workhorse
8)Orion parallelogram bino mount -Very nice but defeated the point of portability to me. Reluctantly sold.
Work:
9)Paramount ME GEM -Excellent performer but I would estimate that the 20" R/C we have mounted on it pushes its capacity to its limit! It has withstood the elements and a mouse nest inside a shaft!
Obviously my favorite is my Losmandy G-11. It just exudes quality and presicion. But my most used by far and away is the Bogen/Manfrotto. I use it on almost a daily basis with an Orion Apex 102Mak-Cass.
What are your experiences? Which are your favorites?
Thanks for your responses!

1)1st Base Dob mount for 10" Newt: Foldable, great for taking to dark sites; Added dual bubble-level and removeable eyepiece holder. 2) Zhumell Dob mount for 8" Newt: Came with the scope; Not bad, but the detent springs were way too tight, had to replace them. 3) CG5 w/dual drives: Good, sturdy mount, but the placement of one of the drives is bizarre, tends to make scope off balance unless the tension knobs are tight. 4) CG4 w/dual drives: Good, sturdy mount, not as heavy as CG5 so better for grab-n-go; Originally did not have saddle, but I bought an upgrade from ScopeStuff that allows me to use standard Synta/Vixen dovetails for my scopes; Now I prefer it to the CG5 if the scope is not too heavy. 5) CG3 w/single drive: Not my favorite, but very light for grab-n-go; Too much backlash in movements. 6) SkyView AZ: Excellent alt-az mount, especially if you want to use two scopes at once; However, not really as grab-n-go as I would like, because legs are not easily collapsed to take outside. 7) Bogen 501HDV on 055XB Tripod: Excellent tripod and fluid head combo; Pretty light for grab-n-go; I can use it with my biggest binos or my 90mm Mak; Nice, fluid movement. 8) Orion Paragon-Plus on Oberwerk Wooden Tripod: Great for when several people of different heights want to observe through a bino; Can support my 20x80 bino if I add more weight for balance; A bit heavy and awkward for grab-n-go. 9) Sunpak Platinum Plus 7500 tripod & head: Great for 50mm or smaller bino, but marginal for 15x70 or 90mm Mak; Only cost me $25, so I'm not complaining. 10) Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action Ballhead on Giotto MM-9180 Monopod: Good for grab-n-go treking to local "dark" sites; Can easily support up to 15x70 binos, but I prefer a tripod. 11) Small Ball Head on Yukon II Monopod: OK for 50mm or smaller binos. 12, etc.) Various small alt-az mounts and tripods that I'd rather not talk about.

I have has several GEMs (not sure if you are interested in integrated systems like NexStar but I have had some of those as well).
Celestron HD Alt-Az. One used and one new. I find them only suitable for light scopes and used as daytime spotters. My own experience is that they are not suitable for anything larger than a very light ETX 90 type scope for nighttime use because they cascade back.
Gibralter. Didn't like it.. Oh, very stable, but fussy when it came to balance. If one uses all eyepieces of similar weight, it can be a VERY nice mount, but if one goes from a 31mm Nagler, to a 4mm Radian, which I did quite often, it was a desaster to use. Too many nose dives for me.
Vixen Polaris. Have owned two.. LOVE them.. My favoite light mount. I do a mod to allow the use of a dovetail.
CG4. Older. Great little mount.
CG5. Original CG5 with a Celestron C9.25 on it. Not enough mount for the scope, but the mount was good.
GM8. The craftsmens mount. Solid, beautifully built, with the best clutch system in the mount business. EXPENSIVE to equip with DSCs and VERY cluttered when equipped that way.
Vixen GP. Nice quality, but honestly? Overpriced. Better than the CG5 in just about every way, but not THAT much better.
LXD55. Owned maybe 3 of these. All were sloppy and needed a bit of tweaking to perform to my own standards, but easy to work on, fairly reliable, and a fine mount for a 4" refractor. I even had a C8 on one for a long time and found it fine for that.
CG ASGT. My favorite mount it the classs. Best handset software for visual observer (in my own opinion).
EQ6. I owned one of the first ones. Mechanically, I love it. Wished for a big boy saddle though, and the tripod was not stiff enough for big refractor. And the software was primative. But a good mount non the less for someone using it in limits.
CGE. Good mount. Had mine for years and except for some cable issues, has been ultra-solid performer. Probably my most used mount ever, becasue the C14 on it is my most used telescope ever.
Meade LXD 750. This mount surprised me. The pointing is the best of any mount I have ever owned. While the software is very old, Meade got it mostlly right even way back then. I think this was one of the first modern Go-To mounts, and Meade really hit a home run in my book. The slewing is robotically fast. People are amazed to watch it whirr across the sky so quickly with the big refractor on it. And the Giant Field tripod is AMAZINGLY stiff. Absolutly the best big refractor mount I have ever owned. Have serioudly considered sellling my CGE and buying another LXD 750 for my C14.
No replacement parts available though. If the handset frys, the mount is toast. I like mine will enough that I might fit it with DSCs if that ever happens. Meade set it up so it could be equipped with internal encoders so the mount could be manually slewed.

Cheapie Baush & Lomb wedge w/ 4" cat - OK
Cheapie Meade GEM with 6" Newt - OK
Televue Gibraltar - nice 'n' easy, not perfect.
Televue Telepod - Same as Gibraltar but tripod is shaky.
DM6 - really nice, will take a big scope. Wish I could counterweight it with another scope.
EM200 w/ Temma II GOTO - superb.
EM200 without goto - my current mount which I LOVE.

Not that many:
CG-4 - too lightweight for me. I still use this to collimate scopes.
Atlas - much better and could handle a C11 after I adapted it to an A-P Portable Pier.
GM-8 - my first "quality" mount; beautiful machine work, fit, and finish. Could handle the C925 and my TMB130SS, but nothing heavier. Put my name on the A-P waiting list.
A-P Mach1 GTO - the ultimate mount for me. Again, super quality and finish. Also has the best and easiest to use hand controller. Can handle any scope I can lift comfortably.
I also have a Nexstar SE mount for winter grab and go with a 90mm apo.
I also had a CPC1100 for a few months until the Motor Control circuit board burned out. That's when I realized that the fork mounted SCT "systems" were not for me.

CURRENT MOUNTS:
AZ3 light, inexpensive and perfect for my lightweight Borg 77 Refractor & SF-70 Ha filter one trip out the door slow motion controls for tracking.
CG5 non goto inexpensive and somewhat light but holds my SV105 like a rock.
AP Mach 1 as others have stated, a great mount, smooooth tracking, holds a C11 and AP155 with ease. Others have put the TEC180 on this mount as well. Im sure it would hold a C14 with even more stability than a G11.
PAST MOUNTS:
Losmandy GM100 the blue version, a great mount with more capacity than the G11 I should never have sold this one.
Losmandy G11 a workhorse mount that I used for 11 years replaced by the AP Mach 1 - a great mount and a great value.

1. panoramic mount and tripod. Still own another one (tripod) using a Stellarvue M1 mount on it.
2. Televue telepod head and tripod. I tried using the Televue telepod head back and forth with the panoramic tripod. Telepod head is nice but just not for me.
3. Unistar on a Bogen 475B. Sold but miss the Bogen.
4. SPDX. Monster setup. What a setup but way more than I needed. If I were younger probably still would have it. These are hard to find nowdays.
I currently use:
Porta Mount on a Gibraltar tripod. Kinda heavy but real stable.
Panoramic tripod with Stellarvue M1.
Oberwerk Jarrah tripod alternates with the panoramic / M1 setup.
Lusting to try a DSV-1 mount.

I've been through 6 mounts... my first one lasted me 11 years (visual astronomy only). Since diving into AP 18 months ago, I've gone through another 5 mounts and have yet to settle on one that satisfies everything I'm looking for in a mount. Problem is, I was hellbent on not putting a lot of money into a mount. After 18 months of constant tinkering, I've realized if I want to be serious about this and avoid constant "personality" from my mounts, I'm going to have to put some real money down...
I'm currently shopping, and looking to go from "lightweight/entry" level AP mounts to a heavyweight. UGH...

I've been through the following mounts or systems with mounts...
1. LX-200 Alt/Azu with an 8" SCT 2. CG5-ADGT 3. EQ-6 Pro 4. Mach 1 GTO
I still have all the mounts excepting the LX-200 when I sold it years ago. I'm not sure if the Min-EQ counts but I've used it with my smaller refractors.

John,
I really like them both. The MG is a little heavier and IMO will take a bit more of a load. However, both are very smooth, have excellent slo-mo controls and with the tension properly set, balance really isn't an issue with either one. I usually use the MG on a SV Stablelock tripod and a Teegul on a TV Gibraltar tripod.

I now know I am in "good" company..geez, and I thought I was the only one who has been a tad overboard on mounts..here goes:
ASGT...loved it, great pointing, but quite a bit of fiddling to get it "just so"
Sirius-EQG - nice, but hand control primitive and the overall mount too light for my liking.
GM8-excellent pointing, tracking and workmanship. Capacity too light; and, I did not like all of the cabling.
EM11-wonderful mount - did not like having to have the computer drive the scope....
CGEM-great "Chevrolet" of mounts. It works. Not too fussy. And, the hand control unit/Nexstar software is mature. Like the Polar Alignment routine.

There's an SP for sale on Astromart with dual axis drives (the Dec motor adapter, as the saying go, is rare as hen's teeth). It's in the auction section even as we write.
I also sold a super polaris some years ago and ended up buying another one. Too much cheap junk out there. These are well made.

It is my considered opinion that of this bunch the two best are the G11 and AP900QMD (is that a surprise?) followed by the SP and the Optical Craftsmen and in last place the CG5 which made me swear never to buy a mount from China.

Tal 1 on a pillar - manual - nice and solid but slo-mos only worked one way (against a spring) and had restricted range
Orion GEM1 (aka Kenko NES) - once again nice and solid, but both motor gearboxes broke and proved impossible to repair/replace
Losmandy G11 - borrowed from work for a while (I worked at a University, and they sometimes used it for reasearch with a massive solar detector array)- rock solid, but also rock heavy - well OTT for my small 'scopes
LXD75 - my only GEM now, this is plenty of mount for my 5.5" Mak and probably gets the most use - I don't use the GOTO much
Ambermile Alt-Az - Giro copy - very quick and easy to set up, and solid enough for all my 'scopes
Manfrotto 501 - good for quick looks with my Ranger and Ha PST
Velbon photo tripod - only gets used for the Ranger in daytime and PST if I need to carry them somewhere
Both photo tripods get plenty of use with my SLRs
