As far as i have read this is the only difference between eq6 and atlas - the presence of polar scope illumination regulation in atlas's firmware. Maybe if you can flash eq6's hand controller with atlas firmware this will fix the problem but i am not sure if it is possible or not. Also i see that on orion's site latest firmware is 3.23 and if the versions of firmware are the same between atlas and eq6 this means that some fixes of versions 3.24 and 3.25 of skywatcher's firmwares are missing in latest atlas firmware. At least for me the polar scope illuminator at my heq5 pro is just enough bright to dim all other stars and leave only polaris to be visible so i find it ok without regulation of brightness.

There is no incompatibility in the firmware. Either the firmware from Orion or from Skywatcher will work. Orion is slow to upgrade their firmware on the site. Solution? Download and install the newer version from Skywatcher. Works just fine, pardner.

I'm using 3.25 of the firmware on my HEQ5 - no such option to dim the light. The circuitry is probably not there. I bought the mount last year this time.

I'll chime in here. The Atlas I found (second hand) has the "G" (GOTO) system installed. There is no pot to dim the PI, and haven't come across it in the 3.25 version of the SynScan. Upon receiving this unit, included (and for sale in the classifieds) was the original motors, controller board, and hand controller for the Non-G version. On that unit's board assembly, there is a pot to adjust the PI's brightness.

I have a two year old EQ6 pro, and can state that it does not have provisions to dim the PI...

Here's what I've been told is the case: Atlas/EQ6 mounts with the latest control circuit board inside them have the firmware's polar scope illumination adjustment option available.

If you have an older board (pre version 2 says my friend) then the option isn't available. It's firmware code that is not active unless you have a version 2 or later control board inside your mount.

There is absolutely no difference between the Atlas and EQ6 besides colours and stickers: But the installed control board may be an earlier or later version number, depending upon when it was made.

As told to me, you can find out what version you have from the hand controller or by using EQMOD software.

Interesting - I've been reading this thread so I went through the manual and the menus on the hand controller (v3.25) of my brand new Atlas. There are options for the LCD panel and LEDs backlighting the keys, but there's no option listed anywhere for dimming the polar scope.

Maybe if one cannot dim the LED polar scope illuminator, a resistor could be installed in line to dim it some, or a piece of tail light tape could be placed over it? At full brightness, mine is annoyingly bright, and Polaris is not even visible.

I put a little red nail polish on the LED itself and that dimmed it down quite nicely.

I'm one of the few people on the planet that has a four year old Atlas and likes the bright polar scope illuminator. Polaris is the only star near the NCP bright enough to burn through; the only other nearby star that could show up is Delta UMi, about four degrees away. If I can set up within a couple degrees of Polaris, I can polar align easily.

This is a common fix discussed periodically on the Yahoo! EQ6 Users' Group. Seems pretty easy to do, but I don't know the resistance used since I like mine bright.

Must mean that like most of us, you have the pre-version 2 board in the mount head. The polar scope dimming option in the hand controller menu doesn't pop up unless you have the version 2 motor controller card.

I wonder if someone could help me?
I can't adjust the polar scope brightness on my NEQ6 mount.
There is no menu for it.
It is only 6 months old.
I'd like to know what software others have?
My 4 software/firmware names are below.
Ver?... means what version do you have?

If you use the arrow button -
bottom left hand corner of the handset -
you would be able to scroll through & see all 4
versions of software loaded
when in the Utility & then Enquire Version section of the menu.

(1) H.C. Firmware Ver 03.23 ....Ver?.......................
(2) Database Ver 03.25 ...Ver ?......................................
(3) HC Hardware Ver 03.04 ...Ver ?......................................
(4) Motor Controller Ver .02 .03.00 ...Ver?...................................

No replies yet for me.
The skwatcher web site doesn't mention this problem &
they haven't answered any of my emails yet.
The web address:

http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/swtinc/customer_support.php?id=29&class1=1&class2=130

I undid the 4 screws on the side panel & had a look inside.
The LED cable ( 2 wires) is quite easy to get at so I could
put a resistor in series with the LED to dim it.
( I am an electronics technician/engineer)
I shouldn't have to as I bet it's adjustable if I just had
the right firmware.
I'll wait another week & see.
I am now convinced that my EQ6 was shipped with the right
motor board but the wrong outdated software so that the
LED brightness in the Polar scope could not be adjusted.

The Skywatcher website needs improving.
The webpage above has a picture of a girl on the phone
which would lead anyone to believe that you'll find
a phone number there but alas there are only
email addresses.

I don't know if there's anything in the firmware to dim the PAS LED, but what I did was take the lo-tech approach and put a thin coat of red nail polish on the LED itself. That did the trick for me.

Then you'll likely need to buy a new mount controller card. There is only one card version that allows the polar alignment scope brightness to be adjusted. If you have the right card, it appears in the hand controler menu under Utilities. If you don't, the item does not appear in the menu. The SynScan firmware reads the mount controller card in the mount head and adjusts/responds to several items that vary card to card, such as the actual sidereal tracking rate values and the polar scope adjustment.

Thanks Skylook,
My unit is only 6 months old.
I really doubt that I need a new card.
I know a unit that was bought only 2 weeks after mine
is able to control the LED brightness.

The point is, if you have the right card in the mount head, the polar scope variance will appear in the hand controller utility menu.

Sorry to state the brutally honest fact, but, of course, purchase time isn't as relevant as manufacturing time. You might have "tail end Charlie" from the V1.X mount controller card stock, while the next person in the shop bought the first of the new units. If you don't see the choice in the menu, I don't think you've got the absolute latest version. Unfortunately, only the hand controller SynScan firmware and databases are upgradeable; with the mount controller card, what you have is what you are tied to.

Personally, I like the bright polar scop light but only because I live in the Northern hemisphere and Polaris burns through. Over the years there have been three common adaptations by users; nail polish, fixed resistor, or variable resistor. Four, if you include removing the LED completely and shining a red light down the tube.

I guess I have one of the older boards too...I'd wish the manufacturer would pull all their 'old' stock out. From posts here it appears that there are 2 versions floating out there: 1 with an old controller card and 1 with the new.
