My Atlas arrived!
      #3670450 - 03/09/10 05:13 PM

Now I have to wait until this coming Monday to see it. Still on the road. Gonna be busy getting it mounted in the observatory in place of the CG-5ASGT.

I think you will be very happy with this mount. Mine worked great and served me very well.

Your little Cartons are going to feel very stable on this.

Cheers,

Ron

Only two of the Cartons are little, the 100mm is pretty hefty, and there's the C6R!

Congrats Doug! You'll love the upgrade for sure.
What will the scope of choice be for the obs.?

Visually, a dance between the C6R for DSO and the Carton 100 for everything else (and also DSO, lol).
For AP use, the AT90EDT.
And occasionally the 60mm's will be riding there too.

Well, don't know if it will be Monday I get home. Due in Conroe TX Monday morning, and it's 400 miles from there to home. So maybe Tuesday I'll get to install it and play with it.

Got it mounted on the pier. Looks really large compared to the CG-5ASGT.
I played with it to make sure it worked, and it does. It is quieter than the CG-5, for sure.
Weather didn't allow me to see it in action though. That waits until next time I'm home.

I forgot to mention how quiet the Atlas is. It is by far the quietest mount I ever owned. The CG-5 could wake the dead, but the Atlas didn't even scare the deer grazing next to me.

Enjoy - It will give your C6-R a great ride!

Enjoy Doug!

I'd have gotten into imaging already if, among other things, I wasn't concerned about wanting/needing to upgrade to an Atlas (decided against the CGEM in it's current edition) but being unable to do so because of a bad back. Don't see any point in frustrating myself. My AT80ED and EON72 make a decent beginner imaging scope/guidescope setup but I don't even have guidescope rings yet. Besides, my observing skills leave a lot to be desired so I'm focusing on that for the time being.

I hope you eventually post some images using the Atlas. I'm looking forward to seeing 'em.

CS,
Steve

Yeah, got so into mounting the Atlas, and doing some small additions to the observatory, that I forgot to take any pictures!
Any AP images I make are not posted generally, until I get better at it. I'm shy.

Great thread! Informative, instructive and FUN plus great pics.

And you didn't offer to bow down and kiss my (college Class and only) ring. Although "Your Excellency" does have a nice ring to it.

I'll settle for that! ANYTIME anyone one sticks their neck out THAT far, you've got to expect to occasionally need help extracting your foot from your mouth.

Come on, it's not like I needed to be psychic to make this prediction. Anyone who's read your posts could have. Most refractor weinies have seen enough pics of triple and quadruple (and more) stacks of refractors to know they look cool, if not practical.

Too bad the AT65Q isn't available in the matching "Doug76 color scheme," but I like the spray paint suggestion.

EDIT: For those wondering what the heck I'm talking about, go to the Vendors Forum and thread titled, "New Astro-Tech Products at NEAF." The new AT65Q (flat field, 2 ED elements including built-in flatner) looks "velly velly inter-hesting." I can't help but want one.

Well, I got some pics of it mounted on the pier. No scope on it yet when these were taken.
Got some shelves up in the obs too, and carpeted them.
That's the new Carton 60mm f/20 on the shelf. It was the first scope mounted on the Atlas.

It sure is quieter than the CG-5 and so much steadier with the C6-R, you will love it. I have also added an ADM dual saddle, which is very nice and allows for either a Vixen or Losmandy set up.

I'm thinking of getting that dual saddle too, as I believe the Vixen dovetail bar is a bit undersized for a C6R. I think it and my Carton 100mm f/13 would both benefit from the larger Losmandy type dovetail bar.

Without a doubt the new saddle was the best improvment I made to my EQ6-Pro/Atlas.

Mine was done before everyone got "on board" with them. I had SkyCaptin, Kerry from Washington make my new collar and then added an ADM saddle.

Your scopes will appreciate this improvement.

The ADM dual saddles are really nice. I've now got three of them. The ability to go back and forth between Losmandy and Vixen-style dovetails really adds a lot of flexibility to the ole observing operation. No more cussin' in the middle of the night ... well, not as much, anyway.

Doug, I would like to mount mine to a pier as you have yours. Was wondering, how are you attaching the pier to the L bracket, is it with a nut/bolt combo that you put on there with the mount not attached to the pier yet? Also, did you make that plate and if not where did you buy it from?

Yep, they are attached with nut and bolt, before the mount is installed. Actually two nuts on each bolt, keeps them from loosening.
And yeah, made the plate. Cut an 8" disc out of a 12x12x1/4 piece of aluminum plate, then cut a 4" hole in the middle to pass the tube through. It's a tight fit for the tube, and it sits directly on the concrete pier, with the L-brackets securing it.
The only mistake I made was using four bolts imbedded in the concrete instead of three. Likely the four are stronger than three, but it was hard to level it.
BTW, the adapter for the mount came from the Orion extension posts made for the mounts (SVP model for the CG-5, Atlas post for the new Atlas).
The tube I used is 4"ID with 1/8" wall aluminum, 6" long.
The rig I made is very strong, and does not move at all, as it should be. And it was cheaper than the after-market pier plates I've seen for sale.
