Light Speed Wagon Mount with handle modification for use with binoculars. Mount by Charles Riddell and one of about 50 made. Handle modification (my concept) with no new holes or any permaneant modification to the original mount; parts made by Ken Dauzat and one of one made.

Here's my homemade alt-az. It has 3.75" friction bearings on both axes and easily carries 20+ lbs loads. I'll post a photo soon of my MN66 mounted with an extension column on a Meade Field Tripod. The Oberwerk Jarrah wood tripod proved too flimsy for the combination of 10" extension column and 44" long OTA. Worked great with the C8, however.

Hi Sedat,

Yes. Here's some instructions and a diagram:

Parts (for 4" mount):

(1) 4" square tubing - .25" wall x 4.5" long
3.75" aluminum round stock - (1) 1" thick and (1) 2" thick
(1) 3/8"-16 threaded rod - at least 14" long
(2) 4" x 4" x .125" aluminum plate
(2) 3/8" ID 1/2" OD bronze bushings
(2) 3/8" ID 7/8" OD sealed bearings
(2) 3/8"-16 threaded knobs with lock nut inside
(2) 3/8" ID 1" OD washers
(2) 3/8" ID wave washers
(2) 6" square 1/16" thick Teflon

I recommend using a Unibit to drill the holes in the Teflon and in the square tubing. Aluminum stock is available cheap from www.metalsupermarkets.com. The knobs are from www.reidsupply.com - part KLK-20. Saddle from www.admaccessories.com. Everything else I got at the hardware store.

Polish the round stock until one side is REALLY smooth and the other is pretty smooth. Smooth the square tubing ends and check that the walls are flat and smooth. Use the two best adjoining sides for the large bearings. Smooth the edges of the thin sheet pieces so they're not sharp and will fit the tube ends.

Measuring carefully, drill 1/2" holes in opposing walls of the square tube, 2" (centered) from one end. It's important that the holes are directly aligned over each other and are square with the tube wall.

Once again measuring carefully, drill 7/8" holes in the other opposing walls of the square tube, 2 1/2" (centered) from the same tube end (or 2" from the other end). Same thing as above about alignment. This way the rods won't meet in the middle of the square tube (duh - although this did not immediately occur to me).

Drill and tap two 1/8" threaded holes in each end of of the square tube for attaching the plates.

Drill and tap a 3/8"-16 threaded hole (from the smooth side), 3/4" deep, of the 1" thick alum. round - THIS MUST BE CENTERED. Repeat with the 2" thick piece. Now drill and tap threaded holes on the other sides of the disks: for mounting your tripod (centered again) on the 2" thick piece, and for mounting your saddle on the 1" piece (holes offset from the center).

Drill and cut two pieces of the Teflon sheet to fit under the 3.75" round bearings. Make two smaller washers for the other side.

Install the bushings and bearings in the square tube. You may need to do some filing/sanding to get them to fit, but you want them snug or you'll need to epoxy them in place. Make sure the outside end of the bushings/bearings is flush with the outside tube wall and that the wall surface is smooth.

Cut the 3/8" rod into two pieces. Thread one end into the 3.75" disk (from the smooth side) and assemble the Teflon bearing, then the square tube, then the Teflon washer, then the steel washer, then the wave washer, then the knob. Do this with the other bearing assembly. Hopefully your holes are true, although you can bend the threaded rod a bit so that the bearing is flush with the tube wall.

Measure where to cut the threaded rod so it will not extend past the knob. Disassemble and cut the rod. Epoxy the threaded rod ends into the 3.75" disks. When dry, reassemble the parts. Drill holes in the metal plate to match the holes in the tube ends. Install the plates with small screws. Install the saddle on the 1" disk.

That's it. I've also built a version with 3" square tubing that works very well for lighter loads (up to about 15 lbs). The bearings (sealed and bronze) on both axes are not entirely necessary and you could make one of these much faster without them.

Hope this is helpful!

-Matt

I should also mention that a drill press and belt sander are necessary to build this mount. But you don't need a lot of skill - I certainly am not the most mechanically inclined person!
