German Equatorial Mount (Homemade)
      #5510233 - 11/08/12 04:43 PM Attachment (224 downloads)

Hello,

I'm gladly here to show you my german equatorial mount homemade, totaly motorized and controlled by computer with PicGoTo system. It was necessary two years for me to construct it, after a long time on project's table and some prototypes, finally, I was able to finish it.

I believe this mount may be more robust than a EQ-5, at least, was projected to be. Here in pictures, it is supporting a refractor with Jaerger's objective (83mm F/12) constructed by me too. But, it will work with a newtonian reflector 6" f/5 and a refractor 3.5" F/5.5 for auto guiding.

Regards,
Delberson.

Beautiful, fabulous, amazing! You need to take it to Stellafane (spelling?) Share some closeups and details on the drives.

Judging from the polar axis altitude I would bet it is a looooong drive to Stellafane....

Remarkable mount nevertheless!!!

Thanks for all Jay Wise,

It's a dream for me go to Stellafane, but for now it isn't possible. I will do some new pictures with more details and post here.

Best regards,

Hi Mkofski,

Here, in Brazil, this wood is known as "angico vermelho", but its scientific name is Anadenanthera macrocarpa, it has high density and resistance. It's a little hard to work with it, due its hardness, but it gives great results.

Thanks,
Delberson.

Hi Dave,

Very perspicacious you are. Yes, would be a long drive to Stellafane. Beyond low latitude, it is on other hemisphere, in other words, 16º South, a little bit after equatorial line.

Thanks,
Delberson.

Hello,

Here is a new picture, this shows some details of worm gear, gearing system and its step motor. In the black enclosure there is one step motor with a 31:1 reductor; this spring pushes the gear against a disc fixed on polar axis producing the correct friction between them to move the axis and protect the gear. With this system, I don't need to lock/unlock nothing when I need to do any manual adjustment.

Regards,
Delberson.

I need some help to determinate how much weight this mount can support. Anyone can help me?

The sky over here is completely cloudy, but when it is clear, I will try to gauge the periodic error of this mount. So, I will estimate how precision I will get with it.

Regards,
Delberson.

I was lucky to be able to go to Stellafane
3 times.

Stellafane is one place that you can stand in
one spot and turn 360 degs and see a Scope/Mount
in every direction you look at.

Very nice job on the mount! How did you connect the RA axis to the wooden declination mounting plate?

Hi starquester,

I have some drafts, but nothing technical. I thought to do some to share, but I need time. If I get that, I will publish here.

Really nice to see another homemade mount! Nice wood! My shafts are just cold rolled steel so I have to keep spraying them with rust inhibitor! Where did you get your gears? My clock drives were made by Optic Craft Machining...

Cheers

Hi Roger,

I love homemade mounts, however, there is so few projects in Brazil. My DEC gear was bought on eBay and it belongs to Orion EQ-5 mount. The AR gear was made by a renamed brazillian ATM, Mr. Pires, Darío.

Thanks,
Delberson.
