If still considering a refractor,(newt)
A "short tube" ie;f/4 8" SN works well on this mount<<I have<<
or perhaps one of the AT f/4 imaging units (since the SN's are a bit "scarce") Low f/l, wide fields, no mirror shift/slop.

The stock saddle of the Atlas is a dual Losmandy/Vixen saddle. There really is t any need to upgrade it anymore.
Welcome to the Atlas Club. You will be very happy with this mount whether visual or photography.

I think that getting started in AP using a long FL telescope would be very challenging. My recommendation would be to start with a very wide field instrument, perhaps even a camera lens. A short FL would be far less demanding as far as perfect guiding/tracking not to mention the fact that fast f/ratio optics would require less exposure time. As we all know the learning curve is vey steep and it never ends.
Just my 2c.

My suggestion would be a TPI spreader and tray, well at least the spreader for stability. If you're going to use a small scope you'll be fine without it. The machining of the spreader is second to none.

Hey everyone thanks for the continued comments. sorry I have not replied had a few bad days here. weds my desktop computer died. and wouldn't you know that thur would follow with my laptop mother board biting the dust also... 
so at GF's computer for now and missed a lot over the past few days. new computer will eat into OTA funds but the atlas will be order still, by this weekend!
