Yet another LX850 mount report
      #5793388 - 04/11/13 10:09 PM Attachment (113 downloads)

Mine arrived today. Got it assembled in the barn, on the tripod. They do still use a 1/2 X 13 center bolt so it will go onto my pier with no issues. Anyone planning that should know that the tripod head adaptor is attached to the tripod head only by the 1/2" bolt; no need for the bolts around the circle as with the LXD750. I may have to hire a crane to get it upstairs, though. If this mount is, as folks keep claiming, a Mach1 clone, then I admire the Hell out of anyone who uses a Mach1 in the field. I'm sure it is heavier than the NJP I just dragged downstairs (Wait; I made Freddy drag it downstairs! I took it off the pier, though...). It was all I could do get it out of the box and onto the tripod, with the tripod set very low (it is short, like the later cut-down Giant Field Tripods).

No GPS reception in the barn, so couldn't test that. No stars in there, either, so couldn't test the Starlock. I tested what I could and all seems fine. Sounds growlier than I expected, but I've been using a stepper-driven mount for four years so I may just not remember what servos sound like. Both axes sound the same so it isn't a bad motor or gear or anything like that. Next step is to drag it upstairs somehow and give it a real trial.

Looks great John! I can always lend a hand to drag it up stairs or down stairs or wherever

the Mach1 is 32lb. for the head. I know that my NJP is waaay heavier than my Mach1:) Your Meade must be in NJP territory as far as weight goes.

Congrats; did you buy just the mount?

Yes. I plan to use it with my AT12RC and FSQ-106N. I like the idea of what Meade has done with the new optical tubes but I'm not in the market just now. A friend is awaiting delivery of a 14" OTA so I should be able to check one out fairly soon.

Another shot. Please pardon the quality; it's relatively dark in the barn and the phone camera prefers more light. Ignore the mess in the background, too!

-edit- Photo removed, now that I have better ones posted...

Some folks hate the threaded shafts but I've been using the NJP with a threaded shaft for years and I like it. I suppose that if you set up/tear down each time it would be cumbersome. To give scale to that image, that C/W shaft is 1.75" diameter.

Beautiful. I like the threaded CW shaft. Works amazing for fine balancing!

Can't wait for first pictures

Getting closer... It's in the observatory and some of the cabling is installed. Had to stop due to rain (the roof gets in the way when it is closed). The observatory PC is dead; have to fix that before I can image. That's funny; it worked a year ago (last time I used it!).

John,

In your first picture of the mount in the barn your tracking seems off. Did you not have the guiding turned on in the cell phone?

The rain passed (and the sky actually cleared!) so I did a little testing. I got the PC to pass POST but it still hangs on BIOS load so no way to run a camera. I'll load up a laptop tomorrow so I can do better testing next chance I get. I was able to use the assisted drift alignment and that appeared to work well. The Starlock indicated star capture and reported guide corrections so I think guiding was working but with no camera running I couldn't get any tracking info to verify that. Goto accuracy seemed OK, looking in the finderscope. It's quieter than the LXD750 I had in there back in the day.

I really like having home switches again!

It was also great to actually spend time in the observatory again. If I get the PC running out there, I'll be back in business!

I got the PC running yesterday so whenever time and weather permit I'll be able to gather some tracking info and maybe a test image or two. I'm out of town next weekend (NEAF) so the Moon should be nice and bright by the time an opportunity occurs.
