A Mach 1 will work well on a use G11 tripod AP sells the adapter to put between the mount and the tripod.

Fantastic feedback folks and you've helped me go in the direction I was leaning towards - Mach1.

This setup will be entirely portable as the lady and I do quite a bit of camping at the surrounding state parks with plans to head further South West this summer. So light weight portability is key.

As stated I do not want to exceed a 9.25". Having had the 11" EdgeHD and as great as it was, it's just too much for me to lug around for imaging while I'm camping.

Now I need to find a proper pier. Thoughts on that? I'm keeping my eyes out for a used Rob Miller "light" version. Any other recommendations?

Thanks again for everything.

I would try contacting Rob. His light tripod weighs about 9lb. and carries more than 200 I think.

JMW, do you have a link that you can post or PM regarding the ad?

I had a look and couldn't find anything ... even had Google attack it with no luck (probably using the wrong key words).

Thank you!

Ed Thomas sells the Geoptik Hercules I believe. It's cheaper than the Berlebach Planet. Not as light as a Rob Miller but you can buy it..

I personally use a cheapo Celestron $75 tripod from an Ultima with my Mach1. It has the exactly the hole spacing for the ADATRI.

Here's the posting from the AP Yahoo Group:

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/ap-gto/message/40485

He is selling an AP900GTO, Rob Miller Tri36M, and a lot of pieces to work with the AP900GTO.

Ah, yes. He is the same gentleman that is on Astromart and has already sold the tripod. Thanks for the heads up!

Orly, I'll have to check out both of the tripods you mention.

I would suggest the Losmandy HD tripod. Simple and extremly stiff. The best tripod for astrophotography.
I am using it with all my mounts, from the GM8 to the AP900 at full load, (about 200lbs total load) without any concern.

Well I did it. Brand new Mach1 purchased yesterday and will be here in 2 weeks. Bought the last one Anacortes had in stock and AP had absolutely none left in inventory until next year.

Still holding my hopes up for a light tri-pod by Miller.

Thanks folks. Though I had my heart set on the AP900, I had no real good reason to acquire it. The Mach1 definitely fits the bill for travelling around to the dark sites.

I have not purchased the RAPAS yet. I don't know why I'm hesitating (it's not the cost), but I guess that since I have not needed a polar scope with my DX and rely on drift aligning to acquire accurate PA ... ?

Is it really that worth it?

Now time to decide on mount control software (learning never ends, does it!?).

I know two people who use the RAPAS with the 1200 and the 900 and they both love it. After those good reports I ordered mine. I'm still waiting but I hope it ships soon.
Apparently it's a lot more accurate than the Losmandy one.
Being used to the polar scope on my Tak I love to be able to be accurately aligned for guided photography within a couple of minutes.
Fo what it's worth I use SGP for high precision pointing and the hand controller for gotos.

Great choice. Mach1's ratings are conservative to say the least. I don't think you'll be disappointed ...

Have you considered the Eagle Pier? It's lightweight, folds up neatly, beautifully machined, adjustable, and is extremely solid. The only downside is the price.
