Lt wt mount for Edge C9.25 HD
      #5865737 - 05/16/13 07:57 PM

I need a light weight GEM to carry my C9.25HD. I plan to ultimately Sell my G11 as it is to heavy to carry around in one piece. I am moving my observing location to the other end of my 10ac to avoid the light pollution. This forces me to go light weight in order to see the whole sky. I can move around to different areas to avoid the trees and still see all quadrants. I will be working out of a warm/computer room/scope and mount storage building currently under costruction. I am looking for suggestion for a mount that weighs 38Lb or less including the tripod that can carry a C9.25 for visual and planetary imageing. Any suggestions?

Celestron AVX? But even that may be a little overloaded...

Yes I understand the the AVX is a beefed up version of the CG-5. Kasey let me know how your CG-5 work with your C9.25.

just a FYI, Celestron says CG-5 is rated to 35lbs, the AVX 30lbs

I wonder why they down rated the VX, it has the same tripod and looks like the same size shafts? I use to own an early non-goto version of the CG5.

What is your budget? 38lbs including the tripod is a pretty tall order for something that will hold the C9.25. The AVX might just fit in there, but it may not be what you want.

ED I have no budget I just buy as long as the CFO approves . By the way when I say 38Lb I ment without counter weight attached.

The most payload and lightest mount is the IEQ45. Weighs 25lbs and has a 45lb payload. Everything else is questionable/heavy. I currently have a VX and want an EdgeHD in 8" or 9.25"(really want 11"), but the 8" makes more sense from a payload perspective. The 11" requires a bigger mount and I setup/breakdown every time. With the VX I can pickup the whole mount with 4" APO in one shot. Awkward to carry, but it works.

The Mach1 weighs 32lb without counterweights or shaft...

If you currently have a G11 I would strongly urge an upgrade to the Mach1, if the CFO allows it. I don't see the iEQ45 being able to carry 45lb (wishful thinking! the Mach1 is 45lb rated) and the iEQ45 would be a downgrade from the G11.

How about putting up a few piers in various parts of your property so you don't have to move the entire setup?

You can't carry a c9.25+cgem in one piece, but you can use a cart to carry it in 3 pieces:
OTA, tripod+head, counterweight

+1 for the Mach1. That's the best you can get in its class. And I would get the right angle polar scope too.
I don't think AP has them in stock now tho.

A lot of good ideas. The IEQ 45 lists the tripod at 25LB but does not specify head wt. I am guessing it weighs about 25-30LB w/o CW. That is way over my ability confortably carry, maybe when I was 40 but at 70+

I used my C925 on a Losmandy GM-8 and it worked quite well for visual. The 925 is right at the upper end of the GM-8's capacity, but at least Losmandy's capacities are honest estimates - not marketing hype.

I'm sorry, but your requirement for imaging capability pretty much rules out every lightweight mount that I can think of.

The lightest mount that could do a decent job of both visual and imaging capability would be the Mach 1, but it's too heavy for me to carry around in one piece.

Cheers,

Ron

Yeah I would only recommend upto C8 Edge HD on the VX mount, this gives you a bit more load to play with, and to add a camera + other accessories without overloading the AVX mount.

An update, the tracking info says my saddle and mount for my 9.25 @ CG-5 is supposed to be delivered today (am at work). From my expereince with the CPC, visual may look fine but till try A/P tracking results are not verified. I will try to get it tried out in next couple days and provide you with a couple pics so can help you can decide, Kasey

Hi,
I would say the Mach 1 but if its too heavy and your leaning towards the AVX you might want to down grade your OTA to an 8".

I Plan to do some LPI imaging only. Camera speed will be 1/15 of a second and faster. Jupiter typically 1/30 to 1/60 second. My two cameras weigh less than many of my EPs. I would not extend the tripod legs as that in my experience is what causes the stability (jiggle) in many of these mounts.
Kasey I will be interested in your experince with your mount.

Mike,
Saddle (ADM) swapped over and 9.25 mounted, just got it balanced and set -up. is pretty close on balance, approx 22lb. counterweight. I am using a VSS+ mallincam so its live video, really will show tracking errors. Hope tomorrow night to try it for a short time to test it. I get up at 2AM for work and doesn't get dark till after 9PM UGGGHHH, but just running it thru angles motors seemed fine. Kasey

Hey Mike, finally got some time to try out mount and am soooooo happy. Will attatch (try to) a couple pics, just raw, a couple snaps from video cam. Note no star trail. The 1 minute is no integration but shows how well it tracks... Final word, for me , am so so so so very happy,, but my CPC was a tracking nightmare. LOL

Kasey

iOptron's web site is confusing about iEQ45 weights. Under the Description and Features tabs, it says 25 lbs. However, Specifications says the mount weighs 20 pounds, the tripod weighs 16.5 pounds and it comes with two 11 pound counterweights. iOptron tech support is supposed to be very good. Why not call or e-mail them and find out for sure?

A 9.25 inch Edge HD on an iEQ45 is one of my candidates for an ultimate astrophotography setup. The only thing that worries me is whether an iEQ45 will be steady enough for long exposures at f/10 or whether I need to invest in a Mach1.

Like you, I need to be careful about equipment weight. I have accepted that photography with an OTA that weighs 20 to 30 pounds will require a mount too heavy for me to carry when assembled. I will have to break it down into head, tripod and counterweights.

Put it this way, if you can afford an upper tier mount, then don't waste your time or money on anything less. It will be cheaper to go with an upper tier now rather than step stone you way up to it in the future. There is a big difference between the mid level mounts and the upper level mounts and there are good reasons for it.
