Any New AP1100 notifications?
      #6230947 - 12/03/13 08:53 AM

I was originally scheduled for November, which has gone by. Anybody gotten one recently?

I changed my order to a 1600 so am out of the loop now.

There is a post on the AP-GTO Yahoo group from one individual who received his 1100. Post was dated Nov. 30. When he actually received the mount is not stated, just first use was on that date.

It's the only report of an 1100 "in the wild" that I have heard of.

I got mine last week except the dec axis box needed a signature so I just got that last night. I just got it together last night but haven't really had any use yet. It's very nice as expected. I used to have a Mach One so I'm getting spoiled by AP quality.

Thanks. I got on the list early and received the first notification some time ago and sent the deposit. Just waiting on the second one requesting the balance prior to shipment which AP predicted to be November.

I'm glad to see some "out in the wild".

I've already got a Mach 1 and 900GTO. Love both but will probably let the 900 GTO go after I've made my comparisons of it to the 1100.

Jeff

I ordered mine last week in August and received invoice for final payment in early November. I was also told that final invoice usually precedes shipping by two to three weeks.

Still waiting here. I went on the notification list last June, ordered and paid the deposit in August when the letter went out to everyone on the list. I was told at that time to expect a November delivery...like everyone else I guess. I called the week before Thanksgiving and the news was not so hopeful. I think the individual on the phone was trying to let me down easy. I did send my final payment so, now paid in full. I got the impression that I would likely not see my mount until late January or even February. I know it will be more than worth the wait once I get it, but the wait is...well what waiting always is, a bit of a pain.

Congrats Jeff! When did you place your order and was it direct through A-P? I had placed my name on the notification list and placed my order and deposit through Anacortes during the first few days before the offer went public. Paid balance off in early November. Gotta be getting close...

I ordered mine direct from Astro-Physics on August 27th (the week before they went on sale to everyone not on the waiting list). I just got my second notice last week. I'm not sure when it will actually ship, but I got the impression that it would be a matter of some additional days and not weeks. I'll let everyone know when I get a shipping notification. :-)

Got mine delivered today. UPS screwed up the order. It was supposed to be five boxes (including accessories) but the next day after A-P shipped the boxes, the shipping status showed one box was "missing" and re-sent the "missing" box back to Astro-Physics?!?!?! How can this box be "missing" if UPS delivered it back to A-P? Neither UPS nor A-P ever figured out what happened. Anyway, A-P reshipped the 5th box and should get here on Wednesday. The 5th box contains counterweights.

I am waiting for ATS portable pier and should be delivered within 2 weeks. I can't use or test the new mount without the pier. ATS pier is dropped ship from ATS factory so it's a separate process.

Peter

Well I've got 146 pounds of stuff in seven boxes coming (hopefully). They're in town as of now so shouldn't be any issues in getting it delivered tomorrow. I would have loved to get an ATS pier, but for now I'll be using a modified giant field tripod. What size pier did you end up getting and what scopes are you planning on putting on it?

Here are pictures of my new AP1100. This is all I can do for now without a pier or counterweights (to be delivered on Wednesday due to UPS screw up). It appears to be quite a bit smaller than I expected. I can carry the whole thing as shown with ease by grabbing the CW shaft and the rear of RA axis.

Hey Peter,
UPS tried to do the same thing to me. They delivered three boxes. I told them I was expecting seven and they told me that the remaining four must be on a different truck. I had received seven tracking numbers so I checked them expecting to find three delivered and four "on vehicle for delivery today". All seven showed delivered. Checked to see who had signed for them and it was no one I had heard of. Come to find out UPS had delivered the four boxes to the wrong location. Luckily I was able to get contact info and picked the boxes up myself.

UPS is getting incompetent lately. This is the second mishap they did to me in a month. About a month ago, I ordered merchandises from Amazon and the package got severely damaged at UPS warehouse and was not able to deliver so they supposedly returned the damaged package to Amazon. Amazon promised a refund as soon as they receive the damaged package and I have not yet received a refund.

OK, nice pics, but where is the GTOCP3 and where does it attach? Hopefully it can go multiple places and not just attached to the base as sort of shown on the AP web page pictures. That would be fairly useless to me as my mounting pillar will have the FSA attached to it and looks more like the table you have it sitting on. It is not as large but there certainly is no place to put the CP3.

It's mounted below the base at the rear. You can see where the GTOCP3 is mounted on AP-1100 at A-P web site. Or download the operating manual, it has lots of good pictures. Since I don't yet have a pier, I cannot mount the GTOCP3 right now.

You might be able to velcro the box to either side of the fork base.

Will the through-the-mount supplied motor cords reach in the side "velcroed" version? I just had another look at the two pics you have shown and it appears that it should work on either side.

I don't know. I will wait till I get the ATS pier and will start assembling everything. For now most of the parts are still in the box.

A-P offers longer cords at extra price, of course.

Note where the bubble level is located at the base. It may be in the way since it sticks above the surface of the base. It looks like the bubble level can be removed.

I am not sure I understand the question.

I use ASCOM guiding and use top serial port of GTOCP3 box. Some people prefer to use ST4 autoguider port. Either port should work fine for autoguiding.

Yeah, that looks all right for sure. I wish there were a more solid method of affixing it but the velcro should work. Thanks for putting it together and supplying the pics.

i was saying since the A-P has great tracking is there still a need for an autoguider? if i were perfectly polar aligned would i need an autoguider?

Just curious, does users have to "align" the RAPAS with AP1100 ? With the adapter for Mach1GTO, users have to do some adjustment before using RAPAS.

The mount looks so pretty.

Well I do. I did the first alignment on my 1600 with an unadjusted RAPAS. Pempro indicated I was about 28 minutes off the pole.

As I am now on a pier, and it's VERY cold outside. I have not calibrated my RAPAS yet.
Springtime, maybe.

Drift alignment first using conventional method or PEMPro. After the mount is accurately polar aligned, then compare Polaris position in RAPAS with an app software for iPhone, Android or A-P ASCOM V2 driver. If Polaris does not match to the app, then adjust three sets of push-pull screws of RAPAS until Polaris in RAPAS matches to app software.

Not exactly.

With PEM enabled, the mount is capable of sub arc pixel tracking even without the encoders. Even assuming perfect polar alignment, The issue with long duration unguided exposures is that the rate the sky itself moves is not constant due to refraction. You probably also have flexure or other mechanical issues.

What you need to track unguided is a model of the sky that accounts for all of this. If AP ever gets around to shipping APC, the pro version can take many exposures all around the sky and build a model that does just that. It even accounts for non-perfect polar alignment.

With APC, you should be able to go unguided, as long as any mechanical errors are repeatable. Actual flex probably falls into this category. Mirror flop may not, and then you'd still need to guide.

Yes that is essentially correct. I have an AP1600GTO with Absolute Encoders and in tests I can expose totally unguided at a long focal length of 3,708mm for about 10-15 minutes before the stars start to get slightly "eggy". That is all due to refraction and flexure however. Measuring the mounts PE with Absolute Encoders results in zero. (Literally) One advantage, is that even with guiding, with the Absolute Encoders one does not need to issue a guide correction very often.

I actually had an AP1100GTO on order but changed it to an AP1600GTO after seeing both side by side at AIC 2013. One minor consideration was the slightly awkward mounting of the control boxes at the rear of the AP1100 mount/pier interface compared to the neater AP1600GTO installation due to that mounts greater size.

Here is a picture of how the Absolute Encoder and GTOCP3 control boxes are mounted at the rear of the AP1100GTO on a wide mounting plate. If you have only the GTOCP3 there is a smaller mounting plate though in the same position.

I just picked up an 1100 plate to mount my CP3 and AE box on the south side of my pier. I absolutely hated the cords sticking out the side of my 1600, it messed with my maneuverability at zenith near the meridian and such.

1100's are a pretty little mount. You guys will love them!! And if anyone got the encoder option, be prepared for awe. I use a T Point model on mine, I power up the mount, connect The Sky X to it, pick an object and slew....Dead centre. This is with 3500mm focal length.

In my opinion, the main reason to get the encoders is if you have a permanently mounted, remote observatory. Once you setup the mount and initialize the encoders (so that they know the position of the mount and a fixed home position), the mount can never get lost again. For a remote observatory, this means that you can recover from stuff like power outages without worrying that the mount or scope might collide with something when trying to get it back to the home position. Once you get it to the home position, it's a straightforward matter to resync it with the sky and be fully aligned again.

Also, the encoders do provide slightly better tracking. You get essentially zero PE with the encoders. My 1600 gets around 0.2 arc seconds of PE with PEM enabled. Also, with the encoders, the mount can perfectly compensate for backlash in either axis. This can offer some improvement to guiding, particularly in declination.

Of course, the AP mounts are legendary for their tracking and guiding capabilities. I suspect that most people (myself included) don't get the encoders. If I had a remote observatory, I would then get them.

I have not yet receive my ATS portable pier. So I decided to come up with a plan to mount GTOCP3 box, USB hub and Optec focuser hub. You can see pictures of my AP1100 along with accessories at My AP1100 plus accessories . All three boxes are velcroed to the mount. I removed A-P nameplates at both sides of the mount.

The way I plan to setup is that all cables (power, USB and focuser cables) will be routed through the mount so that I can carry the whole thing (not inlcuding ATS pier) without disconnecting the cables from all three boxes. I have decided not to use Astro-Physics GTOCP3 holder where it mounts to the South side and BELOW the mount because it's inconvenient. For example if I want to put AP1100 mount on the ground, I would have to disconnect GTOCP3 first (and possibly disconnect cables as well) and I find it inconvenient. I wish Astro-Physics did similar setup like in their AP1600 where you can put accessories at both sides of the mount and not worry about placing the mount on any surface.

Attached is a sample photo.

What do ya think?

Peter

I think it looks pretty good Peter. My thoughts exactly about where the controller boxes mount. I'll think about removing the plaques from the sides as well if I go this way.

Not so sure about leaving the mount on the ATS pier and moving it as a unit unless it is on a wheeled base of some sort. If not, I hope you have a lot in common with "Strongman" Mike Sidonio.

I just looked at the rest of the pictures you supplied the URL to. Just want to add that you might want to move the CP3 up a a half inch to an inch. Although it "looks" accessible, having a lot of room to manipulate the threaded lock-down on the 12V power is pretty much non-optional unless you plan on attaching it once and leaving it like that. I speak from years of experience. The setup looks really nice.

Ditto on the GTOCP3 position. It is odd that the explicitly portable AP1100 has it mounted in such an incovenient low place making it harder to transport the mount all in one piece with as few loose components as possible. There is space to side mount it. In that sense the older AP900 with its top mounted position was also more compact.

Great looking mount though!

Chris

I would have kept my 900 if it had the locking clutches that the new mounts have (Mach1GTO, 1600, 1100). It seems I don't have any problems with the Delrin plugs on my 1200 but if I locked them down hard enough to make the clutch difficult to slip on my 900, I would always forget to loosen them off. Eventually they would mushroom and require replacement.

I think we took a bit of a sideways step with the 1100 and lost a few features I liked (CP3 mounting position being one of them, tool-less setup another) and received a few features which are good (locking clutches, better gear meshing), a feature which is ok (through the mount cabling) and a feature I will likely never have or use (optional encoders).
I like taking the mount apart for storage and transport. Leaving it together is heavy and bulky, no matter that it will "collapse" into a manageable position. Once you wrap a protective box around that big hunk of aluminum it really gets heavy. Having two smaller lighter boxes/cases is definitely a bonus.

Without APCC the encoders are effectively the exact same as a TDM.. (well there is no DEC TDM..)

That's odd, I'm using my 1600 with encoders and a T-Point model and it is doing far more things than a TDM can dream of doing. Does the TDM give arc second pointing? Does the TDM control your autoguiding, especially in DEC to eliminate backlash reversal issues? Does the TDM allow you to find home if your mount becomes lost? Can you set slew limits so you can protect your OTA around the meridian, or if you forget to turn your mount off?
I'm currently enjoying all of these benefits of my 1600, and look forward to more features once the beta testers are done with APCC.

I finally received the 42" ATS pier. My equipment is pretty much complete. With everything assembled, it looks a lot bigger than I expected but it's not too bad. I will have to make few more trips between inside of my house and my backyard than when I had Mach1GTO and C-8 EdgeHD. See pictures of my new equipment in "Peter's Gallery" in my signature, then click on "Current Equipment".

Because the weather in Reno, NV at night is still quite cold, I need one more item and that's 35ft USB active extension cable so I can control and monitor the equipment from inside the house. I had the cable but I gave it away while I was waiting for AP1100GTO and ATS pier to be built. I will probably use the new equipment tonight or tomorrow to calibrate RAPAS and test a few things outside for a few hours before it gets too cold.

I route all necessary cables through the mount. This is a very neat feature and makes the setup much cleaner looking. Because of through the mount cabling, I will have to carry the whole AP1100GTO mount minus the counterweight shaft and top plate/saddle and mount it on ATS pier. It's too messy to disconnect both halves of AP1100GTO because I will have to partially remove the cables from inside the mount before dissembling the mount.

Peter

Thanks for the link. I am glad this product works for you.

I already ordered an active USB extension that I know worked very well with my past similar astro equipment at 35 feet long from:

http://www.usbgear.com/USBG-36FTAB.html

It uses a Japan's built NEC chip that's supposed to work very well. It's similar to look for FTDI chip for USB-to-Serial adapter.

If this cable does not work well, I'll try your suggestion.

Thanks,
Peter

Thanks Paul. The ATS pier is surprisingly light at 34lbs for 42" height. It's actually about 44" tall if you include A-P Flat Surface Adapter with Flat Pier Plate (119FSA-FP). It's the right height for TEC 140 APO. If it was 6 inches shorter, the camera end of the scope could hit one of the legs when crossing the Meridian. Taller pier allows the focuser/camera to clear above the leg and the tube part of the pier. I've set up the focuser and camera positions in such a way that the scope/focuser/camera will clear the pier for the whole Southern sky and up to 3 degrees north of Zenith. In other words Meridian Flipping is not necessary for the whole Southern sky.

Sounds like a nice setup but at 34 pounds, some 12 pounds lighter than my old long gone 10" ATS, I hardly consider it light. I have to admit, they are definitely a solid pier in use, fold up relatively easily and are pretty easy to level. For a portable rig with an AP900/1100, there are not many choices available and ATS makes a pretty good (but not very light ) product.

I learned a long time ago to add a couple of months to the expected shipping date. Usually works out about right.

Hang in there. Back in late November, I was led to believe my AP1100 would not ship until late January or possibly February, then it arrived the week before Christmas. It was an awesome surprise. I really think the AP staff tries to lower expectations on delivery times when you call to inquire so they do not paint themselves into a corner so to speak.

I know it is a killer to wait, but when those boxes show up you will be very, very happy. Hope to hear good news from you soon!

Probably because at least one of us chose to wait to ship (I have pushed mine back from one of the very first to be made to mid-January and now to pretty much confirmed for mid-February) which moved others like yourself ahead, due to other timing commitments. I have a fixed use 1200 to cover the missing 1100GTO which will be used for portable applications later this year. Enjoy the 1100 mount. I am really starting to get excited about having a look at mine once it arrives.

First my delivery was scheduled for December then late January, Now it is scheduled for sometime in February because "production is behind schedule" from what I'm told. FINALLY!!!
Got an email from Daleen telling me my mount will ship on Monday, Now I hope I can get them to ship it Priority mail instead of ground shipping it UPS as it would take another month to get to Korea

There was an issue with a family member of one of the main personnel within AP responsible for the mounts and mount production was "off-line" for a couple of weeks due to that.

Since it is international shipping, AP will probably ship the mount whichever way you wish to pay for within the associated customs, insurance, size, and weight limitations of the requested carrier.

Luckily I don't have to worry about Korean customs as it will be going thru the Army post office and that should save me a bundle of $$ . as for the weight, As long as it's under 76#'s per package it will be fine

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope everyone is safe and healthy. The folks at AP are good people.

It will be the insurance that will probably shut that shipping method down. $5K maximum via USPS, unless that is waived in some manner and I wouldn't be doing that! My guess is someone at Astro-Physics will be figuring it out.

I received my 1100 mount this past week. Everything looks and operates perfectly! I decided to keep the two drive cables outside of the mount since I set up at remote sites and the cables are more easily detached for transport. Running the cables within the mount requires more time for setup and breakdown when splitting up the RA and DEC halves. I also decided to Velcro mount the Control Panel box on the side wall of the mount so that for transport, it is one less item I need to mount and dismount saving time. One thing: I don't like having to unscrew the six 5/16" button head screws with a allen wrench to attach/detach the mount to/from my ATS transportable pier. My past 900 mount had four easy thumb screws.
