I really like this tripod. It may be just what I've been looking for. Would there be a way to attach a typical alt-az mount to the K-Pod without having to machine my own adapter?

You can buy Kessler's 100mm bowl to 3/8" tripod adapter. Or from any number of other suppliers (the 100mm bowl is a standard in the pro video industry).

This would convert the tripod to one with a 3/8" stud, just like many other tripods.

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of having a 100mm bowl? Why is that a standard?

so that you can rotate or tilt your large video camera independent of its fluid head.

there also are 75mm and 150mm bowls. the 150mm bowl is for the very large ENG and studio cameras.

try a search for Sachtler 150mm bowl tripods. Those things are scary expensive ($12K for a tripod!!! and I thought astronomy was expensive...)

As a result of this thread I decided this is what I've been looking for and I ordered one. I received it today let me tell you, the picture doesn't do it justice. This is very fine tripod. Eventually I will start my own thread on my thoughts on it but for now I will say I'm confident I made a good buy. Thanks for the heads up PJ.
