When I retired about ten years ago I bought a Nexstar 5i. I subsequently had it Supercharged by Dr. Sherrod following a collimation debacle. It was an outstanding scope -- great optics and dead-on go-to. I only sold it because I couldn't resist getting the 8SE. I often wish I hadn't -- the 5i was a keeper even if I had no reason to keep it.

Yes I like mine as it is a genuine grab and go. I wish I could get it supercharged as I'd love to know how far it could be pushed.

Yes, that first collimation is nerve-wracking for most of us. I'm still dreading it though everyone insists there's nothing to fear. (Of course, not everyone is as ham-handed as I am when delicacy is required.) So I know where you're coming from.

Just did my first tonight. I only had a 9mm in the eyepiece so still some high power tuning to do but it went well. Ordered Bobs Knobs though as playing with a screw driver so close to that expensive corrector is a nonsense! Surely it would cost Celestron a few pennies to use something better than a phillips screw?

Here is a picture of my 6 SE on a Nexstar GT Mount with a Davis & Sanford ST600 Astro 600 Tripod. I have also used it on my CG-5 mount and tripod.

Nice combo, any thinking behind not using the SE mount?

Yes! Money and Mobility

The OTA was $300 on CN. After selling the 102GT OTA the Nexstar GT Mount was free. And the Davis & Sanford ST600 Astro 600 Tripod was $100 on CN also.

I can pick this up with one hand. it is a 6 inch grab and go scope. My CG-5 with the C6 or C8 is more of a back breaker and not a grab and go but I use it to do Astro Videos.

Here is my C8 Ultima on a CG-5 mount. Hopefully it can fit in as a Nexstar.

It's time to show off my NexStar 8SE.
I got this just over a year ago but didn't post until I'd really made it "mine".
This is what I came up with.

Cheers
Jim

Built the base this winter in my kitchen.
43" tall, internally wired, removable legs and adjustable feet.
It's no concrete pier but it's more stable and taller than the stock tripod.
Designed for use at this location, tripod still used out in the field.

Wires for the dew heaters, hand controller and scope power have just enough slack to slew from Polaris to Polaris 360.
Connections are protected and hidden inside the neoprene water bottle bag.
Eyepiece heater is held in the mount until needed.

I've also done some modifications to the stock SE mount.
By removing the battery compartment and moving the control circuit board to beside the arm I gained 2" of clearance to accommodate my new 2" diagonal and visual back.
Constructed of 1/4 inch plywood and some 3/4 x 3 pine, closed cell weather strip under the plate and finished with truckbed liner applied with a shop towel.
I'm very pleased with the results.

I plan on doing a separate post about this modification.

The toolbox distributes battery or wall power as needed and any wires tuck neatly into the lid compartments.
Baader click-lock visual back and dielectric diagonal.
Probably the best thing I did so far was drill two little holes in the hanger flange on the hand controller and zip-tie a loop of coated wire to it, very handy indeed.
The extra coiled cord is connecting the SkyFi controller to the handset.

And one more where we're just ready and waiting for dark.

Cheers and thanks for looking.
Jim

Wow, excellent work Jim. I think that's the largest modification project I've seen on a Nexstar mount.

All credit to you Jim on some great mods to the scope which has resulted in a really nice set up.

Regards. Peter.
