Here's my first two attempts with the ASI 120 MC. Saturn was right next to the moon so the seeing was not spectacular, but this is a great camera. Once I get the collimation right for the new tube I should be able to get the same quality that Matt just posted (also if he'd HINT HINT maybe post a screencap of his settings HINT HINT that would be awesome too.

Tim, I tried to look at my log from the previous caps, but with the cam not plugged in it freezes FireCapture. It looks like you have good data. How are you processing the images?

Try stacking over 2000 frames with AutoStakkert2, then doing wavelets in registax. When you open the image in registax, uncheck all the sliders except for Level 1, move level 1 too 100%, then click up on "denoise" and "sharpen" about 3-5 times. After you find a good infocus image, click on "RGB align" on the right and align the channels. Im on my phone right now, but I will hop on my pc and see if I can help the image.

Posted this in the beginning AP forum but it should probably go here. My first ever shot through a telescope from two nights ago:

Sorry if it seems a little soft but it's a small, compressed jpeg I uploaded to my photo account. The originals are nicer.

Hi Matt,

I've been using Registax 6 for my stacking, I'm not as comfortable yet with Autostakkert. I think my problem with the capture is a combination of being a bit out of collimation and also not using a bahtinov mask (I haven't made one yet for the 8) to focus on a star before imaging.

The new tube I received has bobs knobs installed so I should be able to get that fixed quickly, and I plan on cutting out a new bahtinov mask tonight to correct any focusing issues.

My question to you is about about Firecapture, is you are using it. What settings are you using for capture in terms of exposure, frame rate, etc? I'm also having trouble getting the colors right, and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with Firecap as far as those settings are concerned. Firecap isn't that much more complicated than wxAstrocapture, but it still takes some getting used to. And as always, any and all help appreciated.

Nothing wrong with using Registax for stacking. I just prefer AS!2.

The color problem can/should be able to be fixed by doing the RGB Align in Registax after you sharpen as I explained.
When using FireCapture, make sure you turn the histogram on and all channels are around 50%.

Set the Gamma to around 50, and you can have a higher gain (70-100) and like I said, get the Histogram to around 50%.
This should put your exposure setting between 30 and 40 ms.

Once these clouds and rain get outta here, I need to have another go at Saturn. My last image doesn't seems to be focused right, even tho I recollimated with Bob's Knobs. I am almost certain my collimation was spot on, and the colors are there, but I was in a rush as Saturn was about to hide behind some trees.

Please share some images after you try those settings out Tim. Im glad I am able to help.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. I've only had my 8SE for 8 months and at first had good weather and fair seeing. I am now discovering that humid southern Louisiana is not the place for astronomy in the summer. I haven' taken my scope out since April 20. Last night the clouds finally left but there was still extremely poor transparency and seeing. I decided to at least try for the moon. Even in poor seeing I managed to get some good looks and photos. Now I think I would like to study the moon more. I've found a few moon atlas websites, but do any of you have a favorite source? Specifically is there any place that tells when a specific feature is best visible based on moon age? I know some features need just the right sun angle to show up, like the straight wall. Any way, from last night here is the southern region:

Those are some great moon shots. I wish the seeing would be better so I could get some shots in myself. The humidity is holding around 80 to 90%.

Lovely images of the Moon nodalpoint.

Sorry for the delay, mistakenly thought all the above images where from the same source.

Thanks for posting.

Sorry, still new to the forum... my 2 moon images were captured with original 8SE, prime focus, Canon 1D Mark IV DSLR, using EOS Camera Movie Record, processed in AviStack2 then PS3.

Straight through the scope here with a T-adapter and Nikon D300. Single images, no compositing so at the mercy of shutter speed and vibration.

Nearly full moon from last night:

Hey, since my T-adapter and -ring showed up, I might as well join in the fun. Captured a couple days ago. 8SE with Olympus E-PL1 (micro 4/3), prime "focus", single image. Edited for contrast + a little sharpening.

I put "focus" in scare-quotes because I focused by hand and the scope wasn't yet cooled.

Edit: Ah, successfully attached.

Edit 2: Okay, I guess it shows the attachment inline if I'm logged in, but I have to add an explicit image tag if I'm not. Weird! Well, I guess I'll add the image tag, at the risk of annoying you with double images if you see the same behavior I do. I guess that's a reason to start hosting images at external sites....

Seriously, you guys stole my idea of taking a picture of the moon this past week.

Actually, I think it's a very good illustration of the sensor size differences among the cameras. I can't fit the whole moon in without a focal reducer!

Also shows what some image processing can do for you....

Yeah, forgot to add I had to use a reducer to squeeze the full moon in there.
