A fine effort nevertheless.

Good to see you "out and about" again Tel, (imaging wise) and producing such a fine image dispite the difficulties.
Seems things were stacked against you. (pun intended).

I managed an hour at the eyepiece last night, but seeing was so bad the only joy was just being out there.

Thanks for posting.

Regards. Peter

Long periods between imaging sessions will make us forgetful Tel, been there ,done that, got the "T"shirt, a good effort all the same, earlier forecast for tonight said clear,(although who ever really believes our forecasts), if so, then maybe try this one with the ATIK 314L,and your 4" scope, not entirley sure of the FOV it would provide though.

regards,

Tom.

Many thanks, guys ! Yes, at least it makes a change to have a few nights of clear skies; (something that's essentially been lacking with any regularity and consistency since before Xmas last year) !

Tom, yes, I will give the Atik 314L a go with thia object although I think I'll stick with the 8" SCT, (plus a f/6.3 reducer), rather than use the 102mm refractor.

In theory, The SCT will give me 18.3 X 24.5 arcmins. which should provide for some good detail, whereas the 102mm at f/5.9 will place the Iris in too large a FOV, (38.3 X 51.2 arcmins.), and thus be somewhat too remote to give me the same.

In all events though, let's hope the weather continues to hold !

Many thanks once more to all and my best regards,
Tel

Well, take a break and what do you guys do - raise the bar! Wow, Uggbits, Tel, Andy, Milby, Maverick, and others, you've really done some amazing work! I mean national publication amazing.

I have done almost no astronomy since the Oregon Star party last August, since the dreaded dec cogging issue with my CGEM was giving me fits. After applying much pressure to Celestron about a month ago, we have been able to get 3 or 4 beta version of the firmware fix to test. I am happy to report that we have no more dec cogging issues! Celestron should be releasing the fix soon to the public. In the meantime, I was able to image at the Camp Delany star party a couple of weeks ago with the beta version of the firmware - with very good guiding, despite a lot of wind at times.

I imaged the Leo Triplet and for grins entered it into the imaging contest - here.

Hope you like it.

Since the guiding has been so much better, and its galaxy season, I've put my old trusty Orange tube C8 back on the mount and have been collecting photons with it. Even imaging at 2000mm FL, which I have never been able to do before with the CGEM. Hopefully I'll have some images processed soon to show you all.

Again, amazing work from you guys.

Glad to be back!

Doug

Well, we are finally enjoying some better weather here in the South of England with a few clear nights lately in the offing, so I thought I'd take the opportunity (Tuesday night), of "attacking" the Iris Nebula in Cepheus, (NGC7023 / Caldwell 4), once again.

This time I opted to use the Atik 314L mono CCD camera rather than the Canon DSLR I used at my last recent attempt, and couple this to my 4" (102mm) f/5.9 achromat. Guiding took place using my usual ol' Meade DSI linked, this time, to my Nexstar 8i OTA.

The attached represents 12 subs at 4 mins./sub with no flats or darks. (The Atik was running at -15.6 Celsius).

Thank you for looking.

Best regards,
Tel

Lovely capture Tel. You've certain pulled out much more of the surrounding nebula as against your earlier attempt.

The weather refuses to Settle up here but hoping for a night out over the weekend.

Thanks for posting.

Regards. Peter.

Good to see you got out Tel, as Peter said, theres more nebulosity in this version taken with the Atik compared to your earlier DSLR attempt

Can`t wait to try this one myself, as you know i was out that same night trying to capture the same target, but high thin milky cloud prevented me from making my capture.

Peter, hope you get your night out over this weekend

best regards,

Tom.

Very good attempt Tel. Wonder how it would look in colour?

Hi Peter, here too weather is hot and humid and cloudy. When the weather is clear, I am either at work or too tired to get up the next day.

The following are Saturn in poor seeing (1.5to2/5) This is a testament to over 2000 stacked images and a fast capture rate ~ 50fps. Now I know I need to reduce the gain and increase the exposure time to get a better picture. My processing skills need to be honed and any tips are appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Nice image, James. You have some nice separation of the rings.

What camera are you using?
