Windy, but best Mars yet.
      #6483162 - 04/23/14 11:46 AM Attachment (111 downloads)

Hi all. I didn't feel like Xbox last night so I decided to try some imaging. OF COURSE as soon as I got ready, after alignment, the wind gusts started. I was still able to grab more detail that I have in the past with a more pleasing color. Hope you enjoy.

Matt nice capture and processing. I do enjoy seeing the small Nexstars strut their stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice result! I like the polar IC and some small circular cloud to the left.

It's going to be clear but 41F with 25 mph sustained winds . Looks like I will be catching some Z's instead of avi's

Thank you all for the kind words. I will have to read those logs before my next capture time. Hopefully no wind gusts.

Small in comparison to some of the scopes they so nicely compete with. Not small in quality, I have to admit when I purchased my 5i the 8i was the next size up and used the same mount so I tend to group them together. After all size is only important when all other variables are taken into account. it's not the size it's how you use it.

Looks great, a lot of surface detail and cloud on the rim edge.

Great image Matt. I really like the natural looking colour, and the detail you've captured.

Thanks for posting.

Regards. Peter.

Nice I also have the 8SE and I just got the ASI120MC last week. I hope to get some results like this soon.

Any tips you can give from your experience? I've been struggling to get good results so far. Bad seeing, bad collimation, bad alignment, bad tracking, and on and on.

Collimation is probably the most important thing. The camera acts like a 3-5mm EP (cant remember) and using a barlow will only multiply your optic issues.

The other is the actual capture settings. I will have to get on my computer and share my log with you for my best capture, as I beat this one already.
Alot of it is seeing, the rest is skill/luck. I have seen some people with unreal images, granted they are usually with C14s and the ASI120MM. But I have been quite proud of what that color cam and an 8" can do.

This is my current best of Mars. And I will add my Saturn from last summer as well.

Stunning planetary images. My first thought was: "nice C14 image of Mars"
