You're welcome Gavin.

Personally, I don't care for soft cases, but they have their place too. One of the best features of the Rubbermaid case I use is the wheels. Once you lift it out of your vehicle, you can roll it to where it will be set up. Sure beats carrying it!

I've been using one of these with my Nexstar 8i, and when my sister got a CPC-800, she got one too! They work very well, provide quite a bit of protection, and make a great bench to sit during an observing session.

Get some thin foam at a fabric store - cuts easily with scissors. Also early in this thread are some photos showing how to easily position the tube/fork assembly in the case. This case is a perfect match for the 1100.

I'm actually thinking about doing away with my JMI case - the foam inside keeps coming loose and I haven't yet found an adhesive that will keep it stuck. I may have to take a trip to Lowes (I don't like 'Home Despot') and see what they have. Maybe I can find some foam that'll work at the local "Michael's" hobby shop/craft store.

I would do that, but that box is LONG gone... It's a great idea, though.

Great idea, but it's 1.5" too tall to fit in my van where I normally carry my scope. I could move it to the rear passenger compartment, but that'd mean removing at least one seat every time I transport the scope.

I may still consider doing this. For the life of me, I haven't been able to find an adhesive that will keep the foam glued into the interior of the JMI case I've had for my scope. I've tried hot glue (3 different varieties) contact cement (rubber glue), gorilla glue. They all stick to the foam, but not to the case.

Randy, What did Jim make the case out of ... teflon?

Since you have to watch which glue you use with the foam lest you dissolve it all how about a 2 stage approach? Apply a thin layer of epoxy to the inside of the case, see if that adheres well. If it does then use one of your existing choices to stick that layer to the foam. Or try the same idea only using CA to bond a few plastic strips to the case and then in turn glue those strips to the foam.

Might also be worth a call to JMI to see if they have any ideas. They've been great to deal with in the past. Or just drop in on your next northbound I25 excursion.

Mark,

That's not a bad idea. I was actually thinking of just roughing up the inner surface (I think the case is thermo-molded HDPE) with some coarse sandpaper, cleaning it with just water to remove the dust and trying "hot glue" again.

Maybe I could just take it up to JMI and see if they'll "re-stick" everything. I'm pretty unhappy with the case, but it was one of their very first for the 9.25.

I'm going to start a new thread on this in "EQUIPMENT" - probably a better location...

Was at Home Depot today and thought of this thread. By way of update, my Home Depot had 9 on the floor for $59.

You can always get 10% off anything at Home Depot by getting the U.S.P.S. change of address form/package at your local post office which includes several coupons (Lowes 10% up to $5000 - Home Depot always matches).

Yep, I picked mine up at HD, and will be getting some 2" foam from work tomorrow.

I will take a pic once I have everything squared away. I also have a left over WingTote that I used to use for transporting the wings of my 45% RC airplane. They will do very nicely for a carry case for the tripod and parts.

I have the JMI case. Its sooo much better.

(just let me believe it, I have to somehow justify the stupid cost of that thing)

I really wish I researched this more, but at the time I dont think this thread was around and I wanted to safely transport my scope asap. blah

I purchased one of these and find it great for transporting in my minivan.
I lined the inside with 1" "yoga mats" purchased from WalMart cut them to fit both sides, back, and bottom and used Elmers spray adhesive to secure them.
I am looking at purchasing the Starizona feathertouch microfocuser and I was wondering if it would have clearance within the case. Can anyone comment?

Randy,
I use 3M #08008 Black Weatherstrip Adhesive. It has worked for me on my JMI cases and my Pelican cases too.

My CPC1100 has the FT focuser and it slides just fine into the big Stanley case, but I use loose foam pads for padding rather than an installed system like you have. I lay it on at a slight angle so the focuser doesn't hit the slight protrusion inside at each end in the center.

Thanks Mike. I guess I stated I placed foam on the bottom (sorry - just learning how to edit my posts) but I left it off to allow the scope to slide in easier when the case is standing upright.
I also place a small piece of the matting at the top once the scope is in place. I find the only way to fit the scope in the case and have the top close when it is upright is to place the CPC inside on an angle, so that should work great.

Clear skies to you and thanks for your help.

Chris
