Cant upgrade to version 4.21 on hand controller
      #5270799 - 06/14/12 08:35 AM

Trying to upgrade to version 4.21 so I can use skyfi with my scope. I can get to the point of data transmission to show on hand controller. two options for com port setting None and comport . I am using a serial to usb adaptor. when I higlight com 3 nothing happens. I stuck at the data transmission reading. I am using windows 7 professional. I have even tried to go into device manager and change the com port setting for the serial to usb device. Any help would be appreciated.

I assume that com3 is the comm port # created by your Serial to USB adapter? If so that's the appropriate number to put into HCUpdate.

Are you using a real Celestron Serial - HC cable? Have you used it with another app (to control the scope/mount for example)?

Has the Serial - USB adapter worked under any other conditions? (like scope/mount control app)

Try another brand of Serial - USB adapter ... Keyspan is popular.

Try another PC with either a real serial port or WinXP.

Are you trying to do this with the program that was downloaded to your computer without being on the web? I got the same message when I tried the above and found that what was downloaded to my computer was not the upgrade but only an interface between my computer and the celestron web site. Once I was on-line, I was able to finally upgrade.

using real serial cable from celestron. Just went out and bought a keyspan serial to usb device. the com port is the same in the HCUupdate. The old serial usb device works with the nextremote program thats whats so strange. Have not tried a winxp or other serial connection lap tops

Even if the machine still needs the serial to USB device, go to a WinXP computer if you can. I had the same problem but found no solution with my Win7 machine, but all went perfectly with an older WinXP laptop.

Wish I knew what the Win7 problem was, but Celestron has been of no help on this. We could use an expert to explain this. Luckily I had an older laptop readily available.

One problem at least is that the HC updater looks to be a VB or C++ application that relies upon the old Windows serial com file. Win 7 Home Premium doesn't doesn't support this elderly serial com OCX. Lots of workarounds on the web but none of them worked for me.

The MC updater does run, but I use an XP machine for HC updates.

Now I was always a reluctant under the hood windows guy, so someone with more current knowledge might have a solution. But when Celestron replaced the old version of the HC with the + version and new software, my guess is that they won't go back and update the old updater.

According to this link from Celestron, it should work with Windows 7 in 32 or 64 bit:

http://www.celestron.com/c3/support3/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&nav=0&kbarticleid=2340

Here is the first paragraph:

"If you have NexRemote, HCupdate, MCupdate, PECTool compatibility issues, simply download the latest versions from Celestron’s Manuals/Drivers page. They will work with Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit systems."

Go to:

http://www.celestron.com/astronomy/telescopes/celestron-cpc-800-gps-xlt.html

Click on "Support" tab and download the following:

"Hand Control Firmware Updates v.1.1.14"
"Motor Control Firmware Updates v.2.2.5"

Unzip both files and run both executable files. It will create icons on desktop and run the Hand Controller Firmware Updater software and follow instructions. Make sure you are already connected to internet so that the software will grab the correct firmware from Celestron Web site and flash your hand controller. Likewise you might want to run Motor Controller Firmware Updater to flash motor controller.

yep, those are the instructions. But nope, they did not work with my Win 7 laptop. I haven't yet upgraded to the May 2012 HC version (was that 4.21?) so I'll be interested to see if that works. But 4.20 didn't. Celestron said my serial to USB cord was at fault--which it could've been for Win 7--but it was fine with Win XP.

Assuming the poster is using the latest version of the Celestron app, it will indeed work. I used it on one of my NexStar HCs with that very OS not long back. The usual problem is not the app or the o/s, but the cotton picking USB-serial adapter or its drivers.

I recently updated my Nexstar HC using my laptop that runs Win 7 Pro, 64 bit. I had some problems updating it using my Keyspan serial adapter until I updated the Keyspan drivers. After the driver update, I was able to get the HC updated to the latest version.

Those links are hopeful, but a bit optimistic. The HC software does not run under Win 7 Home Premium.

The KB article firsts states without qualification that the programs will run on Win 7 64 bit. However it goes on to say this--

Try using the compatibility feature of Windows 7 to install and run your Celestron software. People have had success doing this. We recommend choosing Windows XP 32-bit as the choice for operating system. .

That last is a bit on the cute side for most recent PC buyers. Win 7 Home Premium does not have the Windows XP mode feature of the higher priced versions. It does have a limited XP compatibilty mode, but that does not fix the Celestron HC software problem.

Yes, for 4.21 I'll try new USB adaptor drivers--actually a new adaptor since they don't seem to have new drivers for my current (quite old) adaptor.

Hopeful? I don't know about that. I do know the program runs fine on my 64 bit Home Premium 7. So does Nexremote.

The bottom line? In the Windows world there are so many hardware/driver configurations that nothing is guaranteed for anyone. Sorry it doesn't work for you, but everybody I've talked has been OK...IF they have a good enough USB-serial adapter. That is 99% of it right there, muchacho.

I think it might help if we say what version of Win 7 and what model of PC (PC makers are known to customize the OS).

I run Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit SP 1, build 7601, on a Toshiba Satellite L735. Build number is found in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\CurrentBuildNumber.

I use two serial adapters, a Keyspan and a Startech. I do have the latest drivers installed and the only application that will not run is the HC updater.

There might be multiple issues, but I wager that the problem is that the HC updater expects to find a particular version of the files listed below, that were included in earlier versions of windows.

(C:\WINDOWS\system32)
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ASYCFILT.DLL ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\COMCAT.DLL ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCOMCT2.OCX ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCOMCTL.OCX ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSVBVM60.DLL ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\OLEAUT32.DLL ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\OLEPRO32.DLL ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\STDOLE2.TLB ... Overwrite not allowed
Copy File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\VSFLEX7.OCX ... Overwrite not allowed

Lots of luck trying to locate, import and register an acceptable version or any other simple fix. But if you find one I will bless your name.

I don't know what to say really, but "sorry." It's working on a lot of Win 7 64 bit installations, so I am not sure what your problem is. I'd try all the normal things...uninstall/reinstall, do the same for the drivers, etc., etc.

You might also try compatility mode, etc., though I did not have to do those things on my machine for either program.

All I can say Rod is that you are indeed a fortunate son, but there are those not so fortunate. With a very pained smile I will agree that mostly it does work, but sometimes it doesn't.

Will you do me a favor. Look on your Win7 64 bit Home Premium machine for mscomm32.ocx. Look at the properities. Tell me what directory it is in and the version number.

For the nonce I will keep an XP box handy, and get back to enjoying the view.

I have no problems with my Windows 7 Profesional 64 or my Home Premium 64 laptops. I have been able to update all of the latest updates in HC/MC and also CFM for the HC+. Both have worked for me as advertised. I'm using the Celestron serial port/USB adapter.
