Also eager to see what shapes up here. I run a series of star parties in my city (Geneva, NY) and this spring I look forward to a new mobile star party setup...ultralight scope and a bicycle trailer. I love outreach, and writing about outreach.

A bit perplexed about this myself. I am not being critical and love outreach but I am left wondering why people are going "WOW!!" or "this is so Cool" or "Sign me up" when no one seems to know what they are WOWing about, what they think is cool or what exactly they are signing up for :D
Aren't there already lots of outreach coordinating umbrella groups promoting local national and international outreach events already?

Definitely curious about all of this. Timing couldn't have been better. I've been starting Astronomy outreach efforts within the local school system here, and helping where I can with WSSP and other events. I'm getting the general idea of what's being unveiled here and looking forward to hearing more. An easy to use network for people to interface quickly through is absolutely the way to go in this day and age.

I’m certainly excited about anything that supports Astronomy outreach. I look forward to what this effort has to offer.
At Kopernik Observatory near Binghamton NY ( link ) we have been doing outreach since 1974, and now have a $2 mil science center with RC20, C14, and AP 6-inch scopes under domes, plus other scopes like 8-inch Dobs. Just last night we had a public program featuring a post Doc researcher from Cornell U discussing “cutting edge astronomy”. The week before, we had an Astronomy professor from Binghamton U who presented a program on the latest in IR astronomy.
The NASA Night Sky Network ( link ), supported by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, has a membership that must include hundreds of astronomy clubs. In addition to their information and scheduling website connected with NASA, they offer free educational kits developed by ASP specifically for amateur astronomers giving public programs. The kits are excellent, and provide free components like lenses, DVDs, posters, etc. The NASA NSN also offers (for members) free call-in web presentations by professional astronomers, that include download PowerPoints, etc. The phone calls are free to members.

I sure do miss my Tulsa area astro-buddies! I moved out here to North Carolina back in 2003 and have never found a group like the Tulsa Astronomy Club. The Mid-Atlantic Star Party here in NC has been great, but I've always had regrets that I never made it out to Okie-Tex back when I lived in Tulsa. Regardless, count me in for outreach activities. I've been working with a local middle school where my wife teaches here in Greensboro for the last couple of school years with monthly observing sessions. Should be fun! Clear Skies all!

OK. I'm in. Our club does a great deal of outreach each year. Would be fun to coordinate our efforts. Had a chance yesterday at the local "Earth Day" celebration. Showed a lot of folks what the spots look like on our local star. Lot of fun.

I'm confused, on Page-1 of the thread, we were advised that checking out the Astronomics booth at NEAF would reveal more info.
So a couple of us online via the CN NEAF webcam asked about this, but the on-camera CN crew didn't know much about this..,
When do we get more information?

We are in the process of linking websites, etc. so that information is easier to pass along. The main thing the network is for is to get information, "how to's", program recommendations and more out to the various participants. I hope to have all of this up here on Cloudy Nights as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

Jason, We have always done outreach (we formed in 1980 out of public observing/classes that were held at the local community college) and are part of NSN. We have public events scheduled for the next 3 weekends for example. SWFAS
We are directly involved with the Calusa Nature Center Planetarium.

So I've been thinking about this since it all started and I read an article about someone who was doing outreach by a pier back east. I was thinking it might be fun to ask the local safeway -- or better yet, movie theater -- if I could set up and show folks some brighter things in the sky. Something like a guide, tips, or other ideas for places to do outreach might be interesting to ponder as well. Any thoughts?

Unless something breaks soon I may be slow to respond. Getting ready to take off for the dark dark high rockies for the summer.
Gonna be in a very isolated area...no cell phone at the site, and very limited internet...nearest town 65 miles.
Gonna get to participate in the parks astronomy outreach program with some very knowlegable folks, so am really excited.
Gonna be a great summer if I can just afford gas to get us and the camper there.

Well in a way we do-- The Texas Astronomical Society of Dallas-- TAS of Oklahoma has a very intensive outreach program with over 8000 man-hours of volunteer work last year. We also have a great relationship with 3 Rivers Foundation where many of our members volunteer for outreach at this "state of the art" Astronomy campus.
Our members also assist at the Copper Breaks State Park "star walk" outreach events and hold weekly star parties in and around the Dallas metro-plex.

Many of our members also volunteer their time at the Texas Star Party each year, and also post frequently on the CN web site.
Tell us all about you plan. I am sure we can help out with outreach.

Outreach has been my main purpose for years and is behind the more that 30 public events we do in the greater Salt Lake city area. In addition we do outreach at schools and national parks including the just completed 4 day Bryce Canyon star fest.
I'm looking forward to what this forum can develop into.

There has been a slight delay in getting all the details ironed out but we have a plan in place now and will start acting on that plan shortly.
Our goals are to get outreach materials out to those doing it, have a central place to communicate events, ideas, etc. and recognize those that go above and beyond. Between this forum and the Astronomy Outreach Network website, we hope to accomplish that and more. Things have just taken a little longer to all come together....

Jason,
The South Plains Astronomy Club in Lubbock should be able to participate at some level. We also have a member, the Club President, who volunteers a lot of his time with Three Rivers as well (Crowell, TX being somewhat between Lubbock and Ft. Worth).
I will forward this link to some of our more active members to give them a heads up. I think the astronomy world can offer a big "hurray!" to Astronomics for sponsoring CloudyNights and this even more active outreach proposal, as it develops. Whatever the details, anything that coordinates astronomical outreach is a great idea. Sure hope S&T and Astronomy magazines are put into the mix, too. The more people who can be touched, the better. Hats off to Astronomics and all those involved in this endeavor, and I hope we CN members can rise to the occassion and help make this a success.

I'll be honest, I don't know what is going on. With Astronomic's move among other big projects from the associated vendors, I am not sure sure what the next step is. I was just a volunteer to help out but it seems the major partners involved have not been as active as I have hoped. Not much direction coming from those that I talked to initially.
If everyone would start PM'ing me those that want to be added to the directory, I will take care of that and see what I can do to get things moving behind the scenes.
Thanks!
