Comet C/2009 beginning of a tail
      #4713179 - 07/26/11 02:32 AM Attachment (136 downloads)

I imaged C/2009 P1 tonight for almost 2 hours using RGB filters alternating. I combined the data in Nebulosity, color balanced, then level and curved in Photoshop. I processed the image first by averaging the data, then by using Std Dev 1.75 in Neb. The Std Dev version appears to be showing a tail unless I'm imagining it- what do you think?

Average version:

Nice job.

Nice coma and nice fan-shaped tail.

Too bad I've nothing to clouds here and that's all I seen at night for over a month. Wettest July in over 50 years here in Newcastle.

The comet is and has been showing tail(s) for some while
now in various images that I have been looking at. It is
brightening up very nicely so far.

Nice work on your imaging and processing technique. Thanks
for posting.

Thanks! I hadn't seen any pictures of the tail yet, so I was surprised to see it.

John,
Very nice, I like your pic better than the one on APOD - http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110727.html

Yes nice picture. I viewed this comet this morning and "thought" I saw sort of a small tail. Just like your picture but dimmer/smaller

Thanks, Dan!

MessiTom- A very experienced visual observer friend of mine reported he could clearly see the tail in his 15".

Cool. Iam viewing from an orange zone. I can't wait to see this from dark sky

Ah! My friend was in a green zone and the transparency was really good (for Wisconsin) that night.

My friend Gary Honis captured C/2009 P1's tails back on July 4 from Cherry Springs State Park.

Here's my data from last night. I stacked 2 hours worth of 5min lum filter images with my ST8300 set for binning 3x3 to increase the saturation. It was not as transparent so PHD had some issues guiding on the comet core, but it turned out ok. I also placed the comet at the top of my field so I could get the entire tail.

Nice image. Looks like the comet has a double tail.

I observed C/2009 P1 (Garradd) again last night through an ATM 12.5" split-ring equatorial Newtonian from the Stellafane convention site. A vague hint of the comet's two tails could be seen.

We took a few images last night just to sample the view. Later, I was looking at the orbit and projecting it forward in time via TheSky. It seems that the next month will be the best viewing...

I viewed the comet last night in a 17.5" dob. Not sure if it's because I recently imaged it, but I could clearly see the 2 stubby tails. However, my friends who were with me could only see the general direction of the tails.

I was talking with someone last night who said the reason for the two tails is the orbit. One tail is from the dust collisions and tails behind it, the other tail is from the Sun's effects and tails off away from the Sun. Based on the orbit having an inclination of 106 degrees, that seems sensible.

Viewed visually again tonight doing a program for some underprivleged kids. Using my 10" Dob, I couldn't detect the tails- just a hint of the tail direction. The kids were so enthusiastic! Good times.

Saturday night I looked at this comet and while I didn't see the tails through my 15-inch, I did see the beginnings of a tail at 142X. The site was pretty light polluted even though the Milky Way was visible overhead.
