For the last four weeks it has been tracking slowly over the shoulder of Bootes while turning to line up with Ursa Major. It will soon track through the Big Dipper/Plough tracing a path from the tip of the great bear's tail to the tip of it's nose. However it initially favours those in the far north best as its extremely low or even set for most of the night for those at lower latitudes during November and the early/mid period of December. Right now its in the process of switching from a predominantly evening object to a morning object. It took a while for Bootes to rise above the mountain to my NE so I didn't have much time to look before the sky began to lighten. The zodiacal light was very prominent this morning too--glad the comet is not over in that part of the sky. I first picked it up at 75x--not real bright but definitely not hard to spot (especially with dark, transparent skies). The comet is pretty well condensed with a fan shaped tail. My source posted another more recent observation with the PA of the tail at 350°. He was using an SCT and might have forgotten he had a mirror-reversed view. More likely, I checked back and his observation was 10 days before mine and the PA might have shifted over that time. His more recent obs was the same date as mine and we are within 10° and both to the west. The star to the right of the comet is magnitude 12.7 Hopefully darker skies in a week or two will allow a another attempt. This comet is shaping up, estimate a 10' fan tail and bright nucleus around mag 8 to 9 ish. Prelimiary images show greenish small coma. Nearly overhead at onset of twilight at 07:00. Cresent moon, Venus and Mercury low to SE were fantastic too. Worth getting up for! The comet was still at only about 15° altitude and inside a light dome, but a very condensed coma and a curved fan tail, about 10' long were easily visible. It would certainly have looked much better later in the night at a higher elevation, but still, quite an impressive sight. Had 11x70 and 20x110 binos ready, but after 6 hours in -13 °C and 50 cm of snow I wasn't too keen on waiting for another 2-3 hours Clear skies! The ideal spot is W 124.94° - N 48.42° which is in the Pacific Ocean about seven miles west of the northwest corner of Washington State at the US-Canadian border. Difficult to spot. Not much coma. Condensed is definitely the word to use, but not bright. Tail was short and mainly visible with averted vision or a shimmy of the scope. I'm assuming things will improve significantly as it progresses. Was not easy comet to pick off and certainly didn't have the same kind of presence I observed with Hergenrother or Garradd. I'll be checking back in on this one to see how things change. Bill Hi, As Tonk said..its bright and easy to find, it looks elongated but couldnt detect any tail, as when we observed it on the morning of 16th this month...the sky wasnt very clear with the thin cloud cover sailing over getting views inbetween. It was near alioth and hence made for an easy hop. will try again before the moon moves in.. Hoping that it may prove useful to some I am attaching a map that will give a rough idea of where the comet will be the next few days.. Clear Skies! It showed a short tail, but between the moon still lighting up the sky at midnight and a streetlight right across from my house, it was not much to look at. At least it was recognizable as a comet. I first found it about a degree and a half (below) from the star Dubhe at about 11:30 pm with a 70% waxing gibbous Moon high in the sky. I got a little sleep and went back out and found it again about 2:30 am after the Moon had went down. The comet was visible with low power but not my 9 x 50 finder. This comet seemed small to me and maybe had a brighter nucleus with adverted vision. A faint fan shaped tail was visible with hints of being longer than was obvious. At 11:30 pm it formed a nice triangle with a pair of stars and after about 3 hours when I came back out it had moved about 23 arc/min up next to a 9.4 mag star. When I defocused this star to about the size as the comet it was about the same mag. Hopefully I will get my 12" dob on it soon. Sketch is flipped to match refractor view and shows movement between my two observing times. Not as bright as M81 nearby tho larger in size but much brighter than M51. Clear Skies! Transparency and seeing were mediocre but I could see the big dipper so I went for it. It was easy to spot and I could see a faint tail. It was only 50 arcminutes from Dubhe. 85x was best. I’m glad everyone is having fun with this comet. I’ve updated my ephemeris and graphics for this comet to its osculating orbital elements of epoch 2013 JAN 01.0. Previously they were for epoch 2012 NOV 29.0. Other sources still depend on much earlier epochs, despite the effects of planetary perturbations. The elements I use were provided by Dr. Aldo Vitagliano’s highly accurate Solex astronomical numerical integration program: http://main.chemistry.unina.it/~alvitagl/solex . I then run them through the orbit determination algorithm of his friend Jean Meeus. BTW, Aldo is a member of the Cloudy Nights message board. The comet’s coordinates in my ephemeris are given in decimal form. That’s to ease interpolation, i.e. the process of estimating positions at moments other then 00 UT. I used magnifications of 162, 185, 216, and 259x initially. The comet sported a somewhat condensed nucleus and a rather short tail that fanned out in a narrow fashion. By the time the moon had set, the transparency had improved and I had a far better view of the 8th-magnitude comet. At 360x, the comet's motion was apparent in the span of approximately ten minutes. Elongated center was clearly visible but just a hint of tail with averted vision. It was really exciting. Stellarium typically sets Albedo=1 in it's definition file (ssystem.ini) for all comets. So the actual magnitude can easily differ by a couple of magnitudes from what Stellarium shows it to be. The unfortunate situation regarding the "best fit" photometric parameters put forth on nearly all the Internet sites are based on the combined unevaluated/unadjusted data from a large cross section of observers of unknown actual experience in estimating comet brightnesses, which is an art in itself which relatively few observers ever truly master. Likewise, allowance for the nature and size of the instruments being employed for the observations are mostly also neglected, even though these have been known to introduce a significant bias for decades. These two factors alone, and there are others that are likewise neglected, typically lead to derived formulae resulting in excessively bright magnitude predictions as compared to what is later seen. In the case we have here in Comet 2012K5, the value of "n" derived from the raw data implies a value of 5.2 (2.5*n) which if taken at face value would be a surprisingly large figure, one far more commonly seen as applicable to a short period comet. Unfortunately, one sees this sort of situation arising all too often in regard to Internet predictions of major comet brightness and leading to excessively high predicted mgnitudes for some future date when the object is near periheliion...as was the silliness surrounding Comet Elenin last year, which never had a real chance of becoming a significant object. The comet had an elongated nebulous appearance and its coma was visible with direct vision despite its low magnitude. A hint of a tail was also suspected with averted vision. You have two problems the longer FL will pick up motion far sooner and the image is dimmer compaired to say 480mm where I image. Focal reducers help here. In my C6 and under light polluted skies, it was a faint, undifferentiated fuzzy blob. It was too faint to make out any hint of condensation, let alone a tail. But, I am glad I got to see another comet. I used CdC to get approximate position relative to fixed stars, and starhopped to a spot slightly less in R.A. than Psi 6 Aurigae. Its shifting very fast now!!!!! I estimate tonight that its moving a moons width roughly every 2 hours 40 minutes now. I observed / imaged the comet on 29 December and 01 January. It really is moving quite quickly being only 0.3 AU from earth according to SkyTools. I guided on the comet for my images ( to be posted later ) using PHD. I used the TMB90 and DSI with 3 second sub setting in PHD. This gave a SNR of 8 which was good enough to track the comet while imaging with the main OTA. C/2012 K5 is the first comet I have ever seen in a telescope and I have to say...it was very impressive. I had tried to find a few weeks ago with my 4.5 Newt but had no luck. Santa brought me an Aperatura AD10 and tonight was the fist real opportunity I had to use it. Well the extra aperature sure made the difference. I was able to find it fairly easy...a faint fuzzy, but definitely observable. I was amazed to see just how fast it was moving. I couldn't stop watching it...amazing!! Anyone know what the magnitude of it is...Stellarium said 10.66 but I knwo those numbers can be wrong. The seeing was great tonight...I didn't want to back in it for the evening...saw many open clusters as well tonight...A great night for me tonight. Clear skies! While I was still in the shadow of the trees, I had a look at Jupiter, Collinder 70, the Hyades, Melotte 20, M34, M35, M36, M37, M38, M41, M42, M44, M45, M47, NGC 2244, and NGC 2264. Later on, I gave the comet another go with my Burgess 15x70s. Even with the additional magnification and aperture, the results were the same. I used it to locate the comet a few minutes ago. I wasn't going to drag out a scope tonight, but got to talking to a buddy in KY about it and the enthusiasm revived. It's about 40 deg. outside, the ground is wet, and we have about the worst dewing conditions imaginable. But - it's clear and fairly transparent. (central Texas suburbs) Brought out the 16" f/4.4 from 65 F inside to 40 outside. Heh, heh - yeah you guys know how it looked. Put in the 14mm Pentax and commenced scanning around. It was located quickly and I was surprised how bright it looked - thought it was gonna be dimmer. 10th mag? No official estimate, just a wild guess.(I am lucky to have approx. 6th mag stars at the zenith here) Even without going to a higher mag (pointless with the rapidly cooling optics) the fuzz seemed to sport a tail - not long or sharp - more diffuse and broad and not very long either - maybe an arc minute total cometary length - think Jupiter worth of tail. Here is the fun part: This comet is totally smoking along it's trail!! You can tell movement against the background stars in minutes. Major movement apparent in ten minutes. Wow! My 4.5" Starblast reflector and 26mm Meade 4000 eyepiece allowed for it to be framed nicely in the same FOV as OC NGC 1746. I never realized until tonight what a beautiful cluster NGC 1746 really is and plan to revisit it. C/2012 K5 at low power in the scope clearly showed the tail elongation. Upping the power to ~45x gave a much more contrasty view and exposed more "texture" variation. I felt as if I could almost see the comet moving with careful study. After putting the small reflector up I grabbed my 15x70mm binoculars and used them handheld to study the comet. Tonight the small 4.5" reflector showed the most detail at ~45x. Conditions were cold and there was moisture in the atmosphere but even so the Merope Nebula in M45 was seen in both instruments. Not a bad night. The overhead views from above the ecliptic plane now show the orbits colorized. This is to make it clearer when a minor body is “above” (north) or “below” (south) the ecliptic plane. Thanks, Marcus! I'm still working out the kinks in my processing steps, but I think it came out pretty well. I'm hoping to process the stack later today to get some details around the nucleus. This was guided on a star because the comet is too faint for my 80mm guidescope and I didn't have time to swap my equipment around last night. I pre-processed all my raw frames with flats, darks and bias in DeepSkyStacker, then ran them through ImageMagick using a script I built in UltraEdit text editor in order to stretch the frames by the same amount. Then I brought all the frames into Cyberlink Power Director and set the frame length to .02 seconds and built the video to upload to youtube. If anyone has a better workflow than this please share! I scanned the area repeatedly where the comet should have been with the ASH 17" f/15 classical Cassegrain at 162x and its 5" f/5 finder scope at 58x and simply couldn't locate it. I'm not sure how reliable Stellarium's Mag estimates are, but it looks to me to be closer to mag 10 or slightly brighter. You can check against my video by setting Stellarium's field of view to be Equatorial, Date of 1/6 time, 18:20 field of view to be .7 degrees. You can now see the star field matches the video quite closely. Then just click on surrounding stars which appear to be similar to the comet. Kind of fun, really. After about 5 minutes of searching with no luck, the sucker hole was beginning to close. I could see the cloud bank getting closer to Orion. Tick Tock Tick Tock. As good luck and bad luck would have it, I found it about 20 seconds AFTER the cloud bank covered it up with a thin layer. The view would come and go but I never got a good clear look at it, although I could tell it was definitely a comet. I could see it even with the thin cloud layer and all. Better than nothing I guess. I hope I can get a good look at it before it's too late. Darn clouds. Some great sketches, images, and observations which I just got caught up on. My last observation of C/2012 K5 was November 22nd when it was in Bootes with almost daily solid cloud cover since then so when it cleared off the evening of the 7th (8th UT), I was anxious to get another look at the comet. By now it was in Taurus very near Aldebaran. I was surprised how bright it was. My GoTo is a little off and put the comet core just outside the field of view but I could see the glow of the coma on the edge of the FOV. The tail wasn't uniformly diffuse--it appeared to have streamers in it. As others have noted, this is a fast mover--probably the fastest I have ever observed. I placed the comet just below the center of the FOV so I could include the tail in my sketch and in a half hour it had moved completely out of view. @ Mike Phillips--you must have imaged the comet shortly after I sketched it. The starfield behind the comet trailing behind the tail to the left is the starfield in my sketch. I'll tell you what people--it's getting crowded up there in space. A meteor went through my FOV during this observation followed shortly thereafter by a satellite. Not too many here either as it has been a warm cloudy and wet winter in the PNW. Here is a calibrated image stack of the comet taken on 02 January. Unfortunately I forgot to take some guided star field subs so the stars are trailing in this stack. But it was nice to see that SH 2-235, a faint nebula, was just in the frame which makes for a nice contrast subject for the comet. On 02 January SkyTools reported a comet motion of 12.9 arc seconds per minute and on 10 Jan a motion of 6.34 arc seconds per minute. It was really moving along! Attached is probably my last image of the comet due to it moving rapidly lower in altitude and the continual cloudy night skies. It is 22 X 3 minutes guided on the comet taken on the 10th of January.
