Coyle Field in NJ, is used by many astronomical groups. The field is located near Manahawkin, and they are finishing up construction of a mega shopping center (Target, Petsmart, Best Buy, etc) that will threaten the skies.
I was curious if anyone in the area was planning on doing anything or is there someone we can contact?

Dude, that truly stinks. Sorry to hear it. Apparently, our right to the same night sky we have enjoyed since the stone age is not as important as the right of out-of-town merchants to sell mdse..

Okay, how far is the shopping center from Coyle field?
What type of lights (both parking and wall mounted) are going in. Is there a lighting ordinance in that township?
Will there be late night cut back? Many malls now cut back to only 25% is left on.

Looks like this site is 10 miles from Coyle field as the crow flies. Costco apparently just opened there. The rest will be operational by 2009. Apparently, a BJ's also just opened in the vicinity, maybe a mile or so further away from Coyle in the same direction. I don't know the delta these stores represent relative to just before Costco and BJ's opened up, but I don't believe there were many of these large retail stores.

Hi Doug
If the lighting is done properly, then at 10 miles, Coyle should not be affected.
That is the key though, for the lights need to be full cut-off and not over done (illumination-wise).

The new strip mall in this town (built three years ago and now largely unrented) as full-cutoff parking lot lights. The store signs and interior lights are still omnidirectional and of course the light from automobiles is unshielded.

I'll see if I can go there tonight to take pictures of what type of lights they are using.

Check also the wall mounted lights or wallpacks. They can be a problem.

We just got one of those "cookie cutter" malls too, same stores! You will also get a large shoe store and a Radio Shack, not to mention the orange glow!! How sad, not only the LP, but more traffic and the impact on smaller stores in the neiborhood. Ours put the pet store and the downtown Radio Shack out of business.

I didn't get to stop and get a real good luck but I did drive past today. They are small box shaped lights. Not sure how much they will throw up or down.

They will throw down, but there is still "reflection". I'm about 3 miles as the bat flys, and I get an orange glow from that direction. It won't ruin the total sky for you, just in the direction of the "shopping paridise". The problem is the mall will also attract fast food and other sprall.

How big a voting block would all the astronomers in the country make (both pro and amateur)? Maybe enough to take over a small city or low population county?

What county is that in? I view up at Waywayanda park. On a scale of 1-10 for dark skies I'd say it is a 6. light pollution comes mostly from the south. Fighting the mall is a losing situation. They have HEAVY political backing. Only if it affects the enviroment and the Feds come down on them would make them take action.

I dont even understand why they build malls anymore. Most people shop online. I think malls and shopping centers should become extinct and everyone should move into the 21st century version of shopping-- which is online. Not only do we save dark skies, but we cut down on emissions of fossil fuels to go there and come back, as well as all sorts of air pollution cars exhaust. When will these people ever learn?

If this was the case, they wouldn't be building new malls. They check out a location, sometimes years in advance, to see what traffic (buying) there is. If it wasn't a profitable situation, they wouldn't be there. Driving by ours, the parking lots are pretty full; telling me that many people still shop the "old fashioned" way.

Same here, and thats unfortunate-- the ozone pollution and smog is horrendous here in the summer and much of it is due to car exhaust. Also, our malls have the highest rate of car theft in America! :P
