I have been offered a Q-4 for $1000 that looks to be in pretty good condition. The owner has not used it for at least 20 some years, and is not very knowledgeable regarding telescope.
I have owned two Q-6 in the past and one had coatings on the primary that were starting to turn blue, the other one the diagonal was clouding around the edges. I know these scope come with a risk.
I asked him to look at the primary and diagonal, he said he did not know what he was looking for, I tried to explain to him what to look for , but all he said was, to him it looked ok.
He is around 85 years old. He seemed trustworthy on the phone. I did get him to send me some photos that I will attach.
I am concerned if I need a new diagonal and focusing belt are they still available. I called Davro and was told to email Jay that handles the Q's now that Allen has left. I did that but my email has not been answered.
The price includes a 16mm UO Koeing and 8mm Brandon, full app QTI solar filter and the wooden case.
It sounds like a good deal, but I do not want to buy a $1000 headache either.
Serial # is GH102252C.
You thoughts are appreciated
Gary

I cannot offer a personal opinion, but SteveMM (mainly over on the Classic Telescope Forum) rebuilt one completely several years ago and may be able to offer insight.

Hi Gary,
I just sent you a PM with information. The scope pictured looks nice and you are getting a good discount at $1000. Sure would be nice if he has the tabletop legs and maybe a few other items not pictured.

Looks very good to me as well. Even without the legs it's worth nearly twice what is being asked.

Definitely a good deal and pretty much the same price I got mine for just a few months ago. I only got two of the legs with mine but I did get alot of original correspondence letters and the original bill of sale, as well as manuals and brochures from OTI. The optical and build quality are superb. I ended up getting a brand new Meade #884 tripod with carry bag off Ebay for $30 and it works perfectly with the Quantum. Mine just happens to be S/n 218C. I see yours has the "C" also which was for enhanced silver coatings. A $165 option in 1978.

Who was the salesman on the bill of sale?

Hi Keith, I dont wnat to drift to far here on Gary's thread but the name listed on the order form was James P. Skinner. I also have correspondence from Robert R. Richardson (Vice Pres.) and Paul G. Shenkle (Sales Mngr).
Note the order number #55 and my S/n is GH102218C.

Ah this brings back memories . Jim Skinner was the Central States representitive if I remember correctly. The East Coast rep was Rodger Gordon.
I don't remember off the top of my head who the West Coast rep was. I haven't seen or heard anything from or about Bob Richardson in many, many years, probably not since 1980. I just saw Paul last year, he retired from Davro a few years ago.

After getting this reply from Davro, I will be looking for another scope. Seller may have already sold it. I was putting off replying to him until I heard from Davro....
We will be pleased to quote on refurbishing your Quantum-4 Davro Lens. Our standard Evaluation Fee is 1,850.00 each. After we receive the unit and evaluate what the problem is we prepare a quotation for the Repair Costs. This cost is over and above the Evaluation Fee. All prices quoted are F.O.B., Lansdale, PA. 19446. The purpose of the evaluation fee pays to disassemble and examine the inside of the lens to see what other work may have to be done. Are terms are a check with the order.

Why are they are assuming that there is a problem or that there is a need to even disassemble the scope? It should be easy to evaluate the scope's optics by sight and the mechanics by feel. This price sounds very similar to a construction company overbidding a job because they have too much work already and really don't want the work.

Is this correct???
Sounds like it may be cheaper to send it to the E.R. for a CAT scan or MRI to see what's wrong with it internally.
Really sorry to hear this.

I was floored when I read the email, the secretary did say it was very expensive just to check it out. In the email I told them I wanted to know if they had diagonals and the focusing belt, dew shield, leg, etc..
I really wanted to talk with someone, but was told all Quantum business was done via email.
The reply was from: John Daveler President of Davro Optical Systems.
At first I was told a person there named Jay was going to reply to me.
I called back and told the secretary that no one replied back and left my email address, then I got the reply from John.
I don't think they want to deal with Quantum owners any more, at least this is my experience. It's not like when Allan was there...
