Here is my 10" F5.5 scope which I made the mirror at this years Delmarva Mirror Making Seminar. What a great experience with so many nice people. Thank you, Delmarva!

Nice scope, Jim! (Looks kinda like an old Cave.) How long did it take you to make the mirror?

John, The mirror blank was pre-cut to a curve for an F6 before I even started. It took a weekend to complete the mirror. There were about 15 other people mirror grinding and testing at Delmarva. We all had a great time and would recommend it to anyone interested. Don Surles is the person who I contacted for information about it. I may go back in 2013 to finish a 12.5 inched I started 30 years ago.

Dang! I re-figured a 10" f/6.5 at Delmarva and haven't had time to tube it yet. I'm planning to make it in a classic style like yours using an old Starliner mount. What sort of mount do you have there?

Hi there JimC,
The mount is an old Meade model 850. It was for an 8" f8 telescope I have. It seems to handle the 10" ok.

Here's my DIY dobsonian. From the looks of it this one is from the late seventies or maybe early eighties. The creator of this telescope was Piet Kuit, who seems to be rather known in the DIY world of dobson making. There's however little to be found about him and he died several years ago.
The mirror is damaged unfortunately due to swallow poo which was deposited on the primary when the scope was stored somewhere in Burgundy, France. Without the lid. Yeah. I know.
I am about to take it apart. With some mixed feelings because I am then destroying someone else's hard work. But it is not of this day and age anymore: it doesn't move smooth, the spider vane is archaic, the wood of the rockerbox is enormously heavy and the PVC pipe might be sturdy but it is also a backbreaker. So it's going to be redone using modern materials and basically all that will be left of this telescope is the primary and secundary mirror which are supposedly pretty good ("opticon quality"). I am going to have the mirror tested soon.
Oh. It's an 8" F... 8...ish.

Good luck with that scope, theritz. Don't feel bad about taking it apart, feel good about using the primary elements in a new scope! They could be collecting more swallow poo in a field.

This is the 12.5" f5.35 dob I've been working on lately. I bought it from the local astro club as an equatorial. I was initially only interested in the equatorial mount but the mirrors seemed to be in good shape so I have made a dob mount for the OTA. The tube is aluminium. I made a new primary cell and fitted an Astrosystems secondary holder and spider as well as a Moonlite focuser. It's big and heavy but goes deeper than anything I've owned before.

Thank you Jim and Jeff,
I woke early this morning to take a peek at Orion and Jupiter. The Orion nebula was very impressive and I could make out the 5th and 6th stars in the trapezium even with the poor seeing. Jupiter was very bright however the seeing was not good enough to see much detail.
There is still a bit of fine tuning to do.

I like how you made the rings that hold the tube and altitude bearings. Are they just split at the top and then clamped by bolts through the two longitudinal strips?
