Hi All, I finally pulled the trigger on my Orion 14g scope, or should I say the wife gave the OK to do it. Expected ship date was Feb. 2. More details, pics and first light report when it arrives. I have a solid tube 10" push and pull now and I know that going to a 14" is not the big jump needed for the 1 mag WOW factor, but I feel that having goto and tracking will make up for it.

This is my first big step into goto dobs. I'm sure I will love it ,but there is going to be a lot of things to learn. I'm pretty good with this kind of stuff so I think it will be fun, but I'm sure there will be some frustration and long nights in the living room trying to get it right. I looking forward to every minute of it.

I too just, placed my order for the xx14g. After much diliberation I chose the 14 over the 16 due to size. I will hopefully recieve mine 2-23-13 ish. This will be a considerable jump from my 8inch. I also got the padded case and shroud. I can't wait to get it to a real Dark site.

I called Orion and got some great news about the ship date. When I placed the order the expected ship date was Feb 2nd. When I went back to the site just hours later the new ship date was Feb 24. I thought oh no here we go with the slip ship date. When they checked on my order my ship date was actually earlier, Jan 25! It should arrive by Feb 1st.

Took me about a week of countless deliberation in my head and poking around CN, calls to Orion etc.. before I made my choice. I figured it would be a bit more hassel to pull out the 16 than the 14. The height was also a deciding factor. I'm 5'10" and I might still need a step ladder. Good luck in your choice. either one will be a great scope.

Yes, please guys, keep us informed of your progress. I am considering a 14" too. But if the 16" wasn't so heavy and tall at the zenith, I'd go for it in a heart beat. I want to be able and sit at times, and for sure, not use a step ladder! Sitting is so much more desireable when studying an object. Plus, it easily extends the viewing session b/c it saves on getting tired. I'm 6'0" and have steps to contend with, so portability is important. Each pc s/b under 70 lbs for me. And I think that Orions GOTO is excellent. But tell us about using HEAVY EPs and balance. Also, does the base look waterproof, being I suppose press board.... wet grass, mud and snow here. And with a shroud, how does it do in wind? Perhaps some of the others who already own one can chime in. Good luck with your scopes! Bob

Well after much consideration I ordered the 14g today through a local Orion dealer who is also a club member. Ship date 2-24 so I should have it in hand about March 1, in time for spring observing. This is definitely a lifetime scope and I am looking forward to seeing it in action and the views it promises.

On the xx14g page on Orion's website there is a short video that shows that pretty well. Looks to me that an observer 5'10" or taller should have the eyepiece right about eye level with the scope at zenith.

Hi All, I'm the OP and just wanted to say my ship date got move back to Feb 8th. I'm hoping to get it on the 15th so I can have some time to set it up in the house. I don't know if I'll get to first light because I work a week out of town at a time. If I get it on Friday the 15th I will try to get it to the yard at least. Of course the moon is going to be a problem my next week off the the 19-26 of Feb. I will also be working the week of the Messier Marathon. Hopefully I can get most of them in around the 14th. I will keep you all posted.

If I may ask the deciders for / owners of the 14", why did you decide for the 14", not the 16" Orion, and why not a custom dob that everyone talks about at this aperture size? Any comments on the optics and use of high end (expensive) eyepieces? I'm pondering the same now, and also a 14" SCT so I can sit more, but am also researching the break down and weight issue, since I'm be moving it every time I use it. Regardless, good luck with your scopes. I know it must be torture now to have to wait for them to arrive! Clear skies! Bob

I have owned an XX14G for about a year now and love it. As far as the optics go, I sent my primary to Steve Swayze for evaluation and possible refigure / re-coat a couple of months ago. Took Steve a week to reply that he could do nothing to improve upon it. Cleaned it (for ONLY 10 bucks) and sent it back. Also advised me against recoating (by Spectrum I believe). What a surprise! All of my eyepieces are ES 100 and 82 degree and am very happy with them. Was outside last night under a near full moon observing Jupiter. With my ES 4.7 saw great detail in the GRS and many bands. Also lucky enough to see IO's shadow. Was a great nite!

The primary decision point for me on the 14 versus the 16 was eyepiece height. The 16 is just high enough to require a step stool for viewing for an average sized adult male like me above about 60 degrees. That up-down routine was just not worth the extra two inches.

Per the custom Dob, I definitely want go to and did not want to do a retrofit on a custom scope for more money. As for eyepieces, I have some good glass already and have acquired a coma corrector, so that is not an issue.

Hello all. I have been following this thread for a while now and am as anxious as the OP for this scope to arrive. I have been looking at getting the Orion XT12G but the XX14G keeps getting my attention. My concern is the size of the 14, mainly in the height of the eyepiece. I have an eye level height of 68" and I don't think this should be a problem viewing through the 14 at zenith standing flat footed. However, the way I plan on using whatever scope I decide on is to keep the thing on a three wheeled dolly and roll it out onto my deck from my three season room where I will be keeping it stored. The extra height of the dolly may put the eyepiece up to tippy toe position on the 14. Plus there is the extra girth in the 14 when keeping it stored. I guess my question here to those in the know is the extra two inches worth it, not only in what you can see but in the quality and other attributes of the larger scope?
I hear more good things than bad about the optical quality of the Orion scopes and these first light reviews are important in helping me make a decision on a telescope. I just want the most bang for the buck in a goto scope and yet keep it handy and user friendly.
Thanks in advance to all that may reply.

My reasons for choosing the 14 are the same as mentioned above. If I had a place to leave it set up I may have gone with the 16. As far as choosing over premium the good reviews of the mirror and tracking quality did it for me. I also like the fact that you can move the scope by hand without messing up the alignment.

I realize that this completely violates the laws of telescope delivery, but the dealer just called to tell me that my xx14g which was due to ship Feb. 24 just arrived, due to a cancellation of an order at Orion. Not only that but the forecast for Saturday night is crystal clear and I was already planning a trip to the club dark site. If that forecast holds it would appear that the astro-demons are in abeyance!

OMG!! After looking on the Orion Website and noticing that the ship date had been moved back to 4-5-13 I called Orion to confirm my ship date. I spoke with the sale person and they looked up my Order number and to my dismay, I was told that my xx14g ship date has been moved to 4-5-13. lbsgville, you might want to call Orion to confirm your ship date. Hopefully the Sale person was just pulling the info from the website.

jt I'm so sorry about your delay. I almost hate to announce that I got my email confirmation of shipment. OK not really, but I really am sorry for your delay. If it would have happened to me I would not be happy. On top of that you have to read how much everyone else loves their new 14g. All I can say is try to take some happiness out of it knowing that it will be worth the wait. I will have to pick mine up at the UPS distribution center in my area because I will be out of town on the delivery date. I will go get it Tuesday afternoon and hopefully have it ready for the back yard by Thursday night for a bare bones first light report. If the weather GODS cooperate I will try to get it to my somewhat dark site over the weekend.

I'm truly glad to hear that yours was shipped out!! I was afraid that you would be playing the waiting game like me. That is awesome!! I did call Orion yesterday and managed to get some info out of them. It looks like I'm third in line waiting to be shipped. I'm hoping to get it sooner than 4-5-13. My daughter's school will be having a Dark Sky party in May. I want to bring it out for her school and blow their socks off. I was just hoping that I would have some alone time with my new 14g before then.
Clear skies!!

jt I did get my scope today. I got it together and that was all I could do tonight, it was a long week at work. My thought on choosing between the 14 or 16 would be simple, if you have a place to keep the 16 put together than go for it. The 14 is big!!! I would not get the 16 if I had to break it down. I can only move the base by myself a few inches at a time. Here is a pic next to my 10"

Glad to hear you finally got it. It sure does look nice and big. I'm weighing out the pros and cons between a xt12g and the xx14g. Hope to hear some first light reports and overall thoughts.

I finally got my xx14g, last Friday. I assembled it in about 2 hours. The xx14g assembles and disassembles in about 10 minutes. It has been windy and dusty here in southwestern AZ so the scope sits in its protective cases until the weather calms down!!! BTW this thing is huge, but manageable.

jtrevino glad to here you got your scope. I hope you did not get rid of all your packing material. I used some to make a set up for the broke down base to travel safely, see pic. the set up worked well even when I hit a cow at 60mph. It was just a glancing blow but brought me from 60 to 0 in about 6 seconds. If you are going to be transporting to dark site often and don't have a idea for the base yet you can PM me and I'll get into detail. You will love this scope I'm sure. Please post a new post of your first light as some will not be looking at this one. Enjoy soon I hope.

All I got was the cheese! Under Florida law the farmer was not at fault because a tree fell on his fence at night and he did not know. Lesson learned; do not drop comp and collision on your car even if it's 12 years old, unless it's not worth the deductible. The car was worth about 3k maybe and all I'm going to get for it is $625, but at least they'll come pick it up.
