If your replacing a bad secondary. I wouldn't go with another supplier who has been hit miss on quality. Antares or Protostar are two who sell quality secondaries. web page

I want a high quality secondary but the 2.6 inch Antares and protostar are a bit smaller then 70mm. Will this cause a loss of illuminated field?

70mm is 2.76". It's hard to answer your question without knowing the design specifics of your scope. Do some measurements and lay them out here The 70mm could turn out to be oversized or undersized. Unless you plan on doing photography, shoot for a fully illuminated field of 1/2". Here is another calculator

I have the 2.6" Protostar Quartz secondary in my 12XTi (which optically is identical to your XX12i). I don't notice any significant loss of field illumination using that size secondary.

What's the widest field eyepiece you're using and do you see a difference between the protostar and stock diagonals?

Out of curiosity, what's wrong with your current secondary?

Regards,

No, it's not necessary to replace your secondary holder in order to replace the secondary on any of the Orion XT line of reflectors. When I had an XT8, I replaced the stock secondary with an Antares tenth-wave secondary. With my 12XTi, I electively replaced *both* the secondary mirror *and* the entire spider/secondary assembly with Protostar models, but I could have instead just replaced the secondary mirror and used the stock Orion secondary holder to mount it on.

Thanks Chris and happy birthday. I plan on buying the 1/18 wave Antares optics 2.6. Hopefully I can see a brighter image.

By all means upgrade if you want, but if you're buying it to see a brighter image, then I wouldn't bother. Even if it's 10% brighter, you'd be hard-pressed to notice that without a simultaneous side-by-side comparison. Depending on what's on your scope, there might be other upgrades out there which provide greater bang for the buck.

I wouldn't sell it until you have the new secondary installed.
I paid $20.00 plus shipping for a used GSO 2.75" with the holder.

I've compared standard diagonals in refractors to high end diagonals and to my eyes the difference is obvious. Hoping this will be just as obvious. Subtle but clearly better. Well if there's no resale value I won't bother w the hassle of taking pics and making an ad then boxing it up going to post office. Keep it as a backup just in case.

If there is no one in your area to test your oem secondary fairly cheap, then replacing it (may) provide better images.(which I hope it does).
What are the chances? 50/50, so not so bad of odds.

I second Antares Optics out of Rochester. I use them almost exclusively and have yet to get an underperformer.

Darker skies,

I also have an Orion XX12i and just recently had the primary mirror refigured by Mike Lockwood. I am very pleased with the results. However, I did not have the secondary refigured because Mike's tests showed my secondary is actually pretty good and he did not recommend refiguring.
Each case is different but you may have a better secondary than you realize ; or not!
