My 6" f/8 Dob - It's a pile of trash
      #5971166 - 07/14/13 08:51 PM Attachment (188 downloads)

That's right, it's a big pile of trash. Almost all of the wood and hardware used was salvaged. Yeah, I did a lot of 'dumpster diving' and cleaning up of wood and hardware. I can't believe what people throw away. Anyway, I have been working on it on and off for the past eight months, making just about everything. I'm at the point now to start working on the focuser and secondary, and finder. Hopefully it will be ready for first light soon, maybe a month or two more. I'll be writing about it in detail after a few outings with it.

So, take a look at my pile of garbage. Not bad, huh?

Ed D

ADDED: In case you caught it and are wondering, the bananas are for balance since the primary is not installed. It adds a bit of tropical flavor!

One neat thing about the Dob base are the Alt and Az bearings. The Alt bearings are made from Delrin and are inside the rocker box. It's different and works fine. The center bushing in the box was also made from Delrin. The ground board Az bearings are made from milk jug material and fastened with double faced tape. Initially it was an experiment, but it worked so well I left them. Glad I cut them out neatly. The feet for the ground board are vibration suppression pads for industrial equipment. Yes, all the materials were salvaged.

Beautiful woodwork and scopecraft! I'm envious of your talents, and fine-looking dob! Who knew that bananas can make for such great counterweights?

Nice work! Can't wait to see the finished product! What do you estimate the final weight to be?

That's a very beautiful "pile of trash"! That indeed is a masterpiece of woodworking!

Now, that seems like a great idea!

The counterweights add flavor to the setup; when you get hungry, you can eat a counterweight!

What a piece of junk!

it looks like it's going to be a great scope - easy to transport even in a small car, easy to set up, and great looking. And eco-friendly, to boot!

Like the internal bearing surfaces! Let us know how that works. Leaves a nice clean design on the outside. Good on you for upcycling!

If you do that the scope won't be balanced properly any more.

What a sweet little scope, and I don't mean the bananas! I like the delrin alt bearings-very elegant. I've considered wooden struts or trusses from time to time, but I've never employed them--I think they should work fine in this small dob though. Very nice work, and I love seeing scopes made from salvaged materials.

Jeremy: I weighed the base, and the OTA with the mirrors and some other stuff on it that I believe will approximate the finished weights. Each assembly came out to 14#, so I figure the finished scope will be 28# +/- 1#.
The bananas were fresh. However, I ate part of the scope with my breakfast this morning.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments.

If Taylor Guitars can make instruments out of old packing crates and pallets, I say why not telescopes?

Marketing genius at it's finest. Another reason why I stay away from Taylor guitars.

BTW one of the best "mislead" thread titles ever! Beautiful scope.

I finally got the scope out under the stars for initial testing.

FIRST LIGHT: Tempestuous at best. A couple of days ago I wanted to get the mirrors in it and try it out. In my haste I did a few things wrong, including the secondary mounting and horrendous collimation. However, I did see that my ideas and the project would work as designed and intended.

SECOND CHANCE AT A FIRST IMPRESSION: Last night I took my time and worked on the secondary/focuser assembly, collimation, etc. I also assembled it pretty much how the finished product will end up. I'm not going to elaborate here as I plan to write an article about it.

So, how was my second chance at a first impression? SWEEET!!! I can't believe how well everything is coming together. The views are super, no other way I can describe it. The Alt-Az motions are buttery smooth, and the scope is very easy to set up, use and move around. I spent about 2hr last night looking around the Sagittarius region at globs and open clusters, bright stars, star fields, etc.

Last night my apprehensions and uncertainty vanished. Everything is working out at least as well as I had planned, if not better. I still have work left to do, but I think the finished product is about a month or so away. The attached picture shows the scope pretty much as I used it last night, except I had a temporary light shield across from the focuser. Also, that's not a tool caddy in the back. I ate the bananas so I had to improvise counterweights for my testing.

I see you moved up from bananas to throwin' a wrench in the works.

BTW, great build, looks fantastic and enjoyable. Any idea as to the total capital outlay?

Great build! There needs to be more of this style in this hobby. There is entirely too much attention put on crazy CNC stuff too often. Clyde would be proud!

Yes, $65.19 so far. I have been keeping all the receipts. I only added up items like the wood dowels and finish, as well as items specifically needed for the build, like foam paint brushes. I did not include the cost of items such as the plywood circular saw blades or the miter box because those are things I needed to get anyway. BTW, the two most expensive items were the cans of polyurethane finish and the 1.25" wood dowel for the struts, which alone are more than half of the cash outlay. Everything else was either salvaged or surplus, and the mirrors are the ones I took out of my XT-6.
