How do you guys like the Vixen Porta Mounts with the 102ED size scopes?
Starlighter - is that 1st pic the AT mount?
This thread is right up my alley as I too am looking at these 2 scopes for grab & go etc. Bottom line is BCB is right - you're going to be happy regardless which one you pick. We're lucky to have the options we have! There used to be a day the good refractors were flat out of reach $-wise.

The AT Voyager worked quite well with my 102ED, it has a higher weight capacity then the Porta Mount.

Well, I'll chime in with my tuppence for the William Optics version - I'm very happy with it. I did have the lens pinch too which was easy to fix, but other than that it's great. The focuser is a dream and the lens was flawless and star tested by Willie himself. I haven't had much opportunity to use it but the moon view alone was worth the upgrade over my ED80 - the improved resolution was noticeable. I love my little grey ED80, but the 102ED does (and should) outperform it. I'll be keeping this one until I can find a way to sell one of my organs and move up to a TEC 160. Wait, we've got two kidneys right?

After I replaced the flimsy aluminum legs on my Portamount with wood ones from Hands On Optics, the mount became fantastic. I love it. And the first photo is of it before I replaced the legs. I also replaced the stock slow motion slide-on short handles with longer flex handles that came with my CG4 mount. The stock ones tended to slide right off at the most inopportune times. Having a set screw really helps. I never seem to have any balance issues. And I go from heavy to lightweight eyepieces and I use both my Meade 80mm APO and my SV102ED with the Porta.

Well all I would like to thank each of you for your input, I just placed my order for the Stellarvue SV102ED after much deliberation. Now all I have to do is wait and figure out to tell the wife that somehow my $800 purchase turned into a $1600 purchase, any help there.......

I believe that you're going to enjoy this scope. I've had/have 4 Stellarvue scopes so far, and have had no major complaints about any of them.

Congratulations on your SV102ED. I've had many opportunities to look through a couple of friends' SV102EDs and am always impressed by how good this scope is.
I'm sure you will enjoy the SV102ED, especially with the feathertouch focuser option, which I'm assuming is what you went with.

I think you will really enjoy your SV102. I just got mine a couple weeks ago and it's an excellent scope. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I saved my $300 bucks for some eyepieces and got the standard focuser. It works very well. The fine focus knob dials it in just right. I don't think I could ask for more improvement. I have a feather touch on my C11 and it is a beautiful piece of engineering. But one can do just fine with the standard focuser that Vic supplies.

I'm thinking about getting sv 102 ED 2. I would like to know where did you get the finder scope? I like the set up that you show in the pic. I also have a ports mount, I use it for orion express 80 mm.

I just bought this mount (Astromart auction) for my 102ED.
I'm glad that it's working well for you Starlighter. I was a bit concerned with regards to weight until I read your comments, thanks.
