Last night was the last scheduled opportunity to bring out the big refactors together for pictures and a star party. First task is to get these puppies set up and it is work. We think the work is worth the result.
This is the sequence of setting up the 9" Clark next to Steve's 8". And the race is on ...
Getting the empty tube off the trailer.

Close up of finder. I had to put the shim under the front support to compensate for the taper in the original tube.

We have to modify the rings to allow that. Yes, Steve will break his back if he continues to load the telescope that way.
The rings right now cannot be opened far enought to stay open when the hinge is up. They fall back closed. We need to remove some material to allow that. Steve and I talked about that last night. I have the same problem when I put up the 6" F/17.5.

Impressing refractors!
With these long focal length tubes I guess there are no need of APO-technology for the colour correction?

Well, I'm finally awake. Hard to sleep in with you guys all talking about me.
Next time the new D&G goes out I will have to have the rings open the other way or a "porta Meyer" like Siegfrieds. I dismounted the OTA in a completely different manner last night and still appreciated Bill's help in getting her down safely.
While my back is fine now, I am close to 60 (I won't say which side) and I want to keep it that way.
In a very small way I'm sorry we didn't get more of a chance to compare them in a real shootout but I am so glad we got side by side pictures of them at a public event, and we did have the public. I mentioned to Siegfried last night late that I thought it was the biggest turnout of the year in numbers. At least it felt that way at my scope.

Well as an objective outsider here I can tell you that those scopes can handle deep sky objects very well. Especially due to the fact they have such dark contrasty flat fields. Mike

When you have a steady line of customers it's hard to switch objects. We have big reflectors in the observatory that were largely on Deep Sky. You should see M13 in the 32".
I stayed on Jupiter until close to the end. I then switched to E-Lyrae for a short time before going back to Jupiter to see Io going in front.
I think Steve went from Jupiter to Iota Cass and pretty much stayed there.
With Io we watched the round disk brightly slipping in front of the planet. Easy to see, easy to follow. We watched past second contact where the moon was completely in front of Jupiter and then called it a night. The "Clear Sky clock" was pretty accurate.
It had predicted a window from 6:00 pm till midnight. Clouds started coming in a little early and on occasion dimmed Jupiter enough to notice but not lose it.
Just like the song that goes, "these boots are made for walkin" these scopes are tailor made for the planets and the double stars we observed.
This was our last public star party of the year. It was the best attended. I'm already anxious for next year.

You have guessed correctly! Both Siegfried and I started out on Jupiter for the public since it was visable at dusk. When possible I moved to Iota, Cassiopia (my personal favorite) and I think Siegfried ended the night on Epsilon Lyra.
My scope performs beautifuly on DSO's that you would expect to see nicely in an 8" SCT. That is not where my interests are. I had a spectacular view of the Cabius crater on Friday morning and had there been anything to see, I would have seen it. Doubles, triples, and being able to push the magnification to its limits from my light poluted skies at home in my back yard appeal to me.
When you add to the above what Siegfried calls social astronomy you know where we are coming from. To me social astronomy is more than outreach. Yes, outreach is a big part of it but it is so much more. It includes the neighbor kids stopping by to see when I'll have the scope out front again? It is the friendship of my fellow club members. It is the talk of astronomy, our kids, our lives and past events. It is making fun of our friends for some of the dumb things they have done and being able to laugh at myself for the dumb things I have done.
This is a great hobby.

It just wasn't big refractors last night, I had my little 10" discovery next to Steve's 8". This is a big advantage, due to his long lines, gives me more viewing times, at times I did steal people from his lines. Another problem with mine, is it's black and compared to those long white tubes, it gets overlooked. It does give nice images and with a EQ platform, works wonders at public star parties. I too, can't wait till next year.

Steve
It's our home. It's the place we picked to build our Society's observatory. It's dark enough for our purpose which was to provide a 'public' observatory.
For us it represents perhaps the best compromise of a quality sky that is dark enough, security, and convenience to the public. We reasoned that if we are building an observatory to which we want the public to come we can't build it so remote that the public won't come or at least not in the numbers we want to attract.

I ovrerheard several conversations last night concerning how our scopes are impractical. (no kidding)? How important it is to have a rig that is lightweight and quick to setup.
I do agree but something I have never admited or gotten around to analyzing is how much I enjoy the setup process. I'm sure there is a word for someone like me. Maybe it's "anal". I enjoy the tinkering and fiddling and getting things balanced just right before a night of observing. Again, the tinkering and chatting with folks before the crowds get there is a big part of the fun.

It really is a wonderful telescope.
The best part is that Siegfried delivers it and sets it up, alone for years and now with his son and brother for public outreach. Yes, he enjoys the views. He doesn't get to use it as much as he would like but I can guarantee you if he thought it would turn on a youngster to astronomy or any of the sciences he would move heaven and earth to make an observing event for that youngster.
Thanks Siegfried!

An overwhelming amount of phone calls and demand has lead to the creation of a new product guaranteed to save refractor owners thousands of dollars.
I will soon begin marketing the new Liniar Indicater Augmentation Rubber band or simply know as LIAR. If you use this device with your current measuring tape you will have full bragging rights and save thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on you high end refractors.
Watch for news soon as I will surely be listed in the vendor section soon.
Also sold in bags of 200 for $4.95 from Staples.

thanks for all the pics - I've seen a few Clarks in various observatories and most are not in great shape, at least mechanically. It's great to see a Clark restored to its full glory! Too bad I"m too far away to come to the star parties.

I appreciate the comment but it's not quite in a restored stage. Long ago I made the decision that the scope needed to be portable. I wanted people to look through this scope not just at it. I was fortunate to have it come my way but on the other hand it was also fortunate for the scope. It was destined for the junk yard. The timing of my inquiery could not have been more timely.
In order to make it possible to transport I made an aluminum OTA out of irrigation pipe. The original tapered steel tube would be impossible to transport. I pressed the lens retaining ring into the 10" tube by freezing the ring and heating the tube then pounding them together. It is such a tight fit no fasteners are needed. In fact, the tube bulges slightly .
For the inscribed back plate I had an adapter made to compensate for the taper in the original tube. That allows me to use the original all brass focuser.
I had the brass tube counterweights made. Also note the shim under the finder to compensate for the tapered tube.
So, from the original scope I am using only the most critical and beautiful parts. The lens of course, the focuser and the finder. The rest is made so that the telescope is reasonably transportable.
The Byers mount is also reasonable portable and is enough to hold it reasonably steady. If I ever take it completely out of circulation I would put it on a heavier mount.

that's pretty funny, I don't think people like Clark or Roland Christen would approve of your lens cell mounting procedure but we won't tell them! You did what you had to do, there's no way a steel or brass 9-inch f/15 tube is ever going to leave the observatory! the porta-meyer would never handle it!
The brass parts and lens look gorgeous. I can see that the tube is not original but it look great the way it is. Good job resurrecting this instrument and getting it out for viewing, thanks for sharing the photos.

Hi Pat:
We had a wonderfull night this night. Siegfried and I have plotted a little this summer to get the two Big D&G's together. It was a great photo op.
We have a friend who posts here occasionally who owns an 11" f/15 D&G about fourty miles south of here. He has a great patio to the side of his observatory where we could set up a few of our big guns and really have a one in a million photo.
Is it April yet?

Maybe we could 'Photoshop' his scope into a SPOC location
That would be a whole lot easier than carrying the Clark into Dave's backyard.

Steve pointed out last night the we actually had two refractors there, bigger than the observatory scope. The 8" Brandt is actually a 200mm while Steve's D&G is a full 8" or 203mm.

I'm up for it in April. Of course, all I'd have to do is roll off the roof. You'd need to transport the big guns. That would be an awesome photo with a 9" Clark, and 8", 6", and 11" D&G. - Dave in Orem

Hi Dave,
The thought just occured to me that since you have cars back there, there must be a way to drive back there. If that can be done I could pull a trailer in there. I just wouln't want to (couldn't) carry the Clark pieces that far to the back. But, if we can drive right up, it's doable.

Well, not quite, but thanks for the thought.
I did own the 8" that is now in the observatory. I also owned an excellent 6" F/16.3 that I sold to Joan. BIG MISTAKE! Those are the only two Brandt's I have owned. I did get two others to also purchase 8" Brandt's but they were the F/13.3 variety.
I always considered the 8" an 8". I never thought to measure. It looks like 8". I'm sure Steve could come up with a measuring method to make it come out 8".
Metric Patrick measured the lens after he bought it from me and says it measures 200mm. To this day I have never checked. I guess we need to bring out a micrometer one time and re-measure.

Hi Dave, no one knows just how big an 11" D&G is, here is proof. I'm the only one int this group that doesn't own a D&G. Actually Sig doesn't either. I do own a 6" refractor, just happens to be black.

You're right, I don't own a D&G. But, I still have the 6" that I made for Becky. Until she can take it I will have a D&G although I don't "Own" it. Possession is 9/10th of the law.

Say the word and I'll find you a 5" or 6" D&G f/12-15. We can make this work for you.

I'm up for it in April. Of course, all I'd have to do is roll off the roof. You'd need to transport the big guns. That would be an awesome photo with a 9" Clark, and 8", 6", and 11" D&G. - Dave in Orem
We'd need to have Patrick do a fly over and take an arial shot.

This is an arial photo by club member Patrick of our Stansbury Park Observatory Complex, aka "SPOC".
The left building houses the red 8" F/16.7 refractor often mentioned here. The building to the right houses the 32" Dall-Kirkham, left chamber, and a 16" classical Cassegrain in the right chamber.
This is the place we hold most of out star parties.

By my count our pictures have had over 3,000 downloads. I can understand downloading the telescope pictures etc. but why would 21 people download a picture of a rubber band?

It appeared to be a very innovative rubber band... Or, if you can't listen to a brass band at work you might as well look at a rubber band...

The same people who would download almost 300 images of the inside of Steve's HHR and a scope that is under a blanket.

It turns out this will not be our last star party of the year. Due to a nice weather pattern here in Utah we have decided to hold one more under the lights on a grocery store parking lot.
The big refractors won't be there but we will be well represented anyway. I'll bring the 160, Steve will bring either the 6 or the 8.
Y'all are welcome.

Thank you for the compliments.
This thread has now had over 4,000 downloads. 18 pictures have been downloaded over 100 times, 1 over 200 times.
It is still amazing to me though that a rubber band would have 28 downloads and a cut rubber band would have 13. I'm not sure what that says about this group.
