I acquired an Orion 100ED F/9 refractor off Astromart for $425. It's a nice scope, but came with no case/covering. I'd be willing to get a soft case, or a plastic one and put styrofoam in it, or whatever, but haven't found anything that fits the bill, so far.
Has anyone else found/built a functional case for not a lot of money?

A lot of people seem to call up a Skywatcher Dealer and try to order just the case from their 100ED, its the same scope but for some reason Skywatcher sells their ED scopes with cases.
Its a nice hard case, same thing the Orion EONs come in.

Hey,
I don't know know how long the ed100 is but these are suppose to be 900 mm. (I have ordered the larger one and am waiting for it to arrive). http://www.galileosplace.com/Telescopes/Telescope_Accessories/carrying-cases.html

Here is a case I made last year for my 91mm f/6.6 triplet APO. 1/2-inch hardwood and outside corner round to cover the edges. Yeah, I know, I could have done finger joints or dovetails but I was lazy. Plus, the corner round was pine to act as an additional shock absorber. Total cost less than $50.

I used the original shipping material & just made the inside dimensions identical to the shipping box .

I tried to post one with the lid on it but it says that the file size is too large . I dont get it ? It was taken with the same camera on the same day . Can I somehow shrink it to post ?

I didn't want to pay for a telescope case, so I got a guitar case, instead.

Case open, below. I stuck a jacket at the "bottom" to provide additional padding for the finderscope and focuser end.
This is my Celestron 100ED. However, I'm pretty sure the Galileo alternative mentioned above would probably be as cheap, and look more appropriate.

Hi Collin,
I had a 100ED a few years ago and used a Promaster 40" soft/padded tripod bag. Held the scope and diagonal nicely. Lightweight, portable and not bulky.
...actually, I think I still have the bag! Guess I ought to sell it.

I built a pine box to bury my 120mm f/14.5 In. not near as pretty as starstuff's, but with hinges latches an top prop, only cost about $20.00! sorry but pictures will have to wait till I get home.
Dave... at the top of each forum is a guide (?) I think it is. it tells one what they need to shrink pictures to proper dimensions.

You know, there might even be enough room for boots, too.
Although I actually splurged for a JMI case when I had a 6" achro, I couldn't see spending three figures for a case, particularly if all I really need is a soft case to prevent tube dings.

Yep: "Resize." Any sort of photo editing software (what ever came with your camera, or is already loaded on your computer) should give that as an option.

I've got the 90mm Orion achromat on order, which is about the same length as your scope. I have an old (but barely used) hard golf club case that I plan on putting foam in to both store and transport my scope when I get it.
You might try something like that - you can probably get one on sale or a local craigslist for $30 to $40. Here's one available from Costco for $50. The nice thing about them is they tend to be pretty strong (as they're often made for airline use), usually have wheels to allow for easy transport, and multiple handles - one for carrying, and the other to allow for rolling on smooth, hard surfaces.
You'll just need a little ingenuity with the foam lining to protect the scope sufficiently. Might even be able to hold a tripod and some eyepieces too, with the right foam set up. Hope that helps!

I bought a used Orion ED100 that came with a Skywatcher case that a previous owner got from Skywatcher. As was mentioned above, it's probably worth giving Skywatcher a call. Should be pretty affordable, and will be a perfect fit.
Otherwise, Orion soft cases are fairly nice, though don't offer the protection of a hard case, and are sort of pricey for what they are. I use an Orion soft case for my C6. I like it because it's large enough that I can leave the enitre head of my Unistar Heavy alt-az attached for really quick set up...
If you haven't done so already, you should check out the storage bins in a large department store-- you might find something long enough that's not too big in the other dimensions. Add a towel or small blanket for padding and you're done, cheap. Probably won't find anything long enough that isn't huge in the other dimensions, though...

Here are two cases I made:
The larger one contains a 6" F1200mm refractor, and it cost me under $100 for all wood, foam, hardware, screws, varathane, etc. It is very solid, and the scope is very well protected. Your scope is a little smaller so it might cost you a little less, and the end result would be custom made to offer your scope maximun protection.Here is a link outlining how I made them.

I have also modified some suitcases to make them better suited for storing eyepieces and smaller accessories practically for field use. The cases that come with pluck-foam inserts or movable dividers just don't do the trick for me, so I came up with these:

Wow! Everyone, thanks for the fantastic posts! Man, I had no idea I'd be receiving a demonstration of artistic craftsmanship at its finest. How impressive! So, Joe, did you get the case from Galileoscope, and if so, how is it? Does your scope fit in it okay? What is your scope, exactly, Joe? I'm most interested in your post to answer my original question, but I would really like to thank everyone who posted a response. If I had the time, I'd love to try and build one of these excellent wood cases, but my time is not my own and Joe H's find is a wife-approved astronomy purchase.

Thanks, Joe. Just ordered mine. For $30, you can hardly go wrong, and for a 100ED, it should fit fine. Gosh, your 120 is a significantly larger scope. Not a problem I'd mind having, of course, but I would have to get a different mount, and I like my EQ-3 (Orion AstroView).

Let us know if you can fit both the 100ED AND your Astroview into the carrying case. If so, it would probably also fit my lxd55. $30 for something that could carry both would be worth consideration.

I carry my 100ed and porta-mount II in an orion soft carry bag. I think I gave $40.00 on e-bay for it. works great and well padded. they regularly sell for about $65.00

Just visited e-bay. Didn't see any suitable Orion soft case, but I did see the Galileo soft case for $15, including shipping!
However, by the dimensions, it would be a little too short to hold my lxd55 mount and tripod.

OK, I am home and here is the picture as promised! 
It is about $15.00 worth of hard ware, $10.00 worth of 1x12
pine, and 2 (busy and lazy) hours of work. 
oh, and just fer da record... it's an f/11.5, not a f/14.5 like I just read that I so mistakenly wrote. wish I had one tho!
