My new-to-me APM/TMB 175 F8. It's been around a few owners before me and is the same unit that was reviewed here on CN in 2004.
Congrats Jeff.
But, I can't understand why a 7 inch apochromat would go through so many owners.
If I owned a big refractor like that I don't think I'd bother with any other scope.
Steve
Having a APM-LZOS 175 F8 myself, I agree this is the perfect refractor, however it complements very well with a C14 Edge or with a 24" dob.
7" is really the perfect apo aperture. Smaller not enough resolution, larger cool down issues.
Also with this focal length (1400mm) we get rid of 2" Field Curvature evident in smaller non-flat-field apos.

Very nice Joel, about the same vintage as my Traveler. You had to replace the entire focuser, correct? How's the new focuser? I've been thinking about the upgrade but the $670 price tag makes me hesitant. -Tim

Thanks Tim! Yes the entire focuser must be replaced but it makes a world of difference from the original. Makes viewing a pleasure whether you are a visual observer or doing astrophotography and makes it much easier to find the "sweet spot" with various eyepieces/cameras. IMHO well worth the investment for an already great portable scope if you can afford it (icing on the cake).

Tim, once you get the AP/FT focuser for the Traveler literally in your hands, you'll understand why it is expensive .... and well worth it. It certainly had that effect on me. You won't regret it.

It's worth every penny. Like all things AP a beautiful piece of equipment and it is very helpful in such a fast scope.
Alternatively, take a look at used prices. When I wanted to upgrade my Traveler's focuser the used price was the same regardless of focuser. I bought a Traveler in perfect condition with the dual speed focuser and sold mine for exactly the same price, zero cost to upgrade.

Oh God Mike don't show anymore pics like this one again! I'll never to my dying day stand out in snow with no walled protection around me ever again. Those are horrific memories I'm trying to keep buried in my subconscious. BBrrrr! Mike

Glad to see another shiny Traveler with a FT focuser upgrade. I am also very fond of my c1995 shiny beauty and love taking her with me when I can, when I travel (but with a lighter tripod!).

Well, if I'm feeling to blah to be bothered setting up the 4", or if the neighbors next door are being a bit rowdy and I don't want to draw attention to myself, then I open the bi-fold windows in my sun-porch and hey presto, I'm observing! This little guy has an old 3" F/15 Broadhurst and Clarkson objective. A previous owner has dinged it and the flint has a crack in the edge. However this seems to make little difference to the views, it's an easy and forgiving lens which I've made into a solid yet portable telescope.

Thanks for that pic...I now have a Valentines Day gift for the wife! Perfect rendering of us, my brown hair, her blonde, of course when we were much younger...the scope even looks like the TV Genesis I used to show her her first astronomical sights. Brings back fond memories...hopefully it will for her too! Thanks for posting!
