I recently acquired an APM/TMB 115mm CNC Classic refractor that I'm super excited about. I also have an AT65EDQ (pictured on top of the case in lower right corner).

The original 80 mm f/6 achromatic doublet lens of my William Optics ZS 80 OTA has been replaced with a 80 mm f/6.95 APOGRADE FL doublet lens. Besides the much improved performance and the almost CA free view, I can now use the OTA with a binoviewer without the need for a Barlow lens.

Hi folks,
I thought I'd share the new imaging setup. I don't have the luxury of a garden large enough to host a dedicated observatory so the solution I started planning a year ago had to at least look presentable during daylight.
The pier was made in two stages with a deep foundation poured using regular cement plus a plasticiser with 2 metre stainless steel rebar protruding about a metre above ground level. Once that had cured I then poured the top half into a mold and also poured the detachable top upon which rests the armillary. I used the same recipe for the cement with the addition of a dye to give a stone effect. To give an idea of scale the pier without the top stands just under 1.3 metres (50 inches) tall. When I poured the pier I embedded four stainless steel eye-bolts. This was done using the same stainless steel circular plate you can see in the top right image to get the positioning absolutely precise. The two circular plates were made for me to my design by a laser cutting company so I was able to specify a tight tolerance between the width of the various bolts and the holes they fit through.
Assembly is pretty straightforward. There is still a very slight (small fraction of a millimetre) play when the two plates are attached but I always make sure I rotate each one fully clockwise before tightening up the nuts. The aim was to get a totally repeatable set-up each time and indications are that I actually see an accuracy of about 1 minute of arc. The heaviest detachable item by far is the mounting itself but I've avoided any hernias so far!
Here's a closer view of the telescope where you can just about see the four bolts holding down the bottom plate and the bolts fastening the top plate to the bottom one. The mounting is bolted to the top plate but you can't see that in the image.
The equipment list is:
- TEC 140 telescope: 140mm objective and a field flattener at the other end giving f/7
- Kendrick Dew Heater: Essential in the UK
- ASA DDM60 Pro: The Pro version includes a USB hub
- Starlight Instruments motorised focuser
- A power distribution/switch box
- An FLI CenterLine filter wheel
- An FLI ML16803 astronomical CCD
The USB hub in the DDM60 Pro mount means that all I need is a single 12V power line and a USB connection running to the mounting. Both power and USB are routed internally and are available by the telescope which means no tangled cables. The focuser, filter wheel and camera are all controlled via USB as, indeed, is the mounting itself. As a result, although I need a micro-ATX sized computer relatively close to the telescope together with a 12V power supply, I can take advantage of a long HDMI cable and a wireless mouse and keyboard to control the whole shebang from inside my conservatory which is just out of shot on the left. Luxury!
Testing has gone really well and I've already demonstrated an ability to take 1,000 second exposures unguided. That's down to some remarkable technology in the ASA mounting, although I'll take credit for doing the calibration work.
Bob.

Very nice start to part 5! I'm still an astro rookie and my first thoughts after seeing those last three mounts was "what in the heck is that crazy contraption?" Where's the handles for panning the scope around? Those things look extremely complicated.

9 (2 + 2 + 5) element 60mm f/16 and 10 element eyepiece setup, yielding 169x. I am hoping to see Trapezium A-F with this small scope. So far A-E, no F.
Total 19 elements. It produces nice image in spite of so many elements

Thanks Rob; Yes it's a TV85. I used baltic birch plywood stained to dark walnut, tray is held in place by 3/4" earth magnets, and leg bands put to good use! It turned out to be very solid.

Explore Scientific AR152 with the 9" extension and Twilight II and some DIY counterweights done with cable ties and Losmandy VW. Oriented it this way to show that there's no issue on clearance. The AR152 is the new model with the longer dewshield.

Hi all,
Here is my current imaging setup at home.
The details are as follows:
Imaging Telescope: Skywatcher ED120 with a Moonlite focuser with DC motor option
Guide Scope: Skywatcher ED80
Mount: Skywatcher EQ6 Pro
CCD: QHY8L
Guide Camera: DMK21
More often than not, I tend to use the ED120 for imaging, but on occasion I also use the ED80 for imaging and guide with the ED120.
In terms of field flatteners, I either use a Hotech SCA Flattener which leaves either scope at its native f7.5 or the latest William Optics 0.8x Flattener/Reducer III, which reduces the scopes to f6 for a "quicker" imaging platform.
Cheers,
Daniel

Here is my first and last attempt at solar observing with my new Istar. The Seymour Solar filter was a complete bust though. Not good enough quality in the film for even rice granulation. The 10" F/11 R30 can't be topped. Last night I had perfect diffraction rings.... brighter first rings followed outward by ever decreasing in brightness rings. Mike

Hi Bro....
Thanks for your comment.....
Initially I would like to dismantle the whole scope and send for spray painting in pearl white.... But it seems to be quite troublesome, so I purchased from DIY store, one roll of delco adhesive tape, then I just paste it over.......and if I want to change the design look again, I just need to remove the tape and apply another new one....

Cool scopes everyone. Here's my newly acquired grab'n'go solution. An Orion EON 80 on a Portamount II. It's as light as a feather and a joy to use. The Portamount is surprisingly stable even with the stock tripod.
Today my EON80 arrived. Unfortunately, I have to return the scope as the right coarse-focussing knob has significant play.
I also noticed that when mounted on a Vixen Porta II mount, the finder mount on this scope can not be used (gets in the way of the azimuth control).
Anyone who is using an EON80 on a Portamount and has a solution to this?

Pretty colors coming from the NP127 observing the sun. The green light comes out of all my Televue scopes, including a doublet, with or without the wedge. The blue light comes from a Baader UV/IR Cut filter installed before the wedge.

Have you tried relocating the slow-mo controls on the Porta? I found I preferred the Alt control coming straight back. It places it right next to the focuser on my WO 80.

I like it allot. It's a well thought out design...dew shields both ends and clear removable dew covers as well. At first I thought the red dot adjustments(2) were going to be an issue [they require a small screw driver], but it's so stable that once adjusted it stays put. It's a nice piece of work. -Tim

Thanks. The picture you posted suggests to mount a finder on the female mounting plate that is rotated 180 degrees. That looks like an attractive solution.

I really enjoy all the pictures on this thread and I visit on a daily basis. My most recent addition is an Explore Scientific ES127 Apo adequately mounted on a CG5-GT setup for extended viewing of Mars. As the night steadied I was delighted by 400 power views of Mars (80x per inch) which for me is unchartered magnification teritory. This is my new grab and go setup in 3 short trips.

My refractors are now coming together.

Showing my Orion ST-80, Celestron C102 and Orion ST-120. I now have Antares focusers on all three.

My Meade 90mm on top of my Celestron 6". I replaced the bad plastic focuser on the Meade with a better mostly metal one but it's still 1.25". The 6" is waiting a Moonlite.

My original first telescope. A Jason 60x700 mm refurbished. I still need a new lens retainer however and I am planning a Crawmach focuser for it as well.
I don't have a current picture of my other two small refractors. I have a Jason-Tasco 60mm f/4 and a 30mm zoom.

Antonino you are a man of discriminating taste - that is the Takahashi EM200. I like the looks too, the outer housing is made of beautiful sand cast metal and it's built like a Swiss watch on steroids. It will easily carry 30+ pounds. Has the best polar finder in the biz and 5 arc second accuracy out of the box. It's a bit pricey new, but they often come up on the used market. Mine is the non-goto version "USD", the goto version is referred to as Temma.

Now that is sweet!
BTW James you're lucky you have that TV diagonal with one-piece construction! Leaving a 31T5 rotated to the left or 10 o'clock position like that has caused many nosepieces to unscrew and the eyepiece rotates down and sometimes even falls out with a rather sickening crash. I'd also consider trying the rings with the knobs on top I find it easier and safer when sliding the tube up and down for balance or putting the tube in and out of the rings.
Congratulations that is a dream setup!

Yeah, I agree that the rings would be safer with the knobs on top. It concerns me having them on the bottom.
However, the rings that I purchased were drilled with holes for the finder, and those holes are on the opposite side from the knobs. This means the knobs have to go on the bottom, so the finder can go on top. It's not an ideal arrangement.

Definitely not "run of the mill:" gorgeous setup. And I won't be one to complain about italian engineering and style. By the way, from the description (in italian) it sounds like you were rather picky on the specifications of the details!
P.S. .... and that Northek really wanted to do a job on this scope that they would be proud of.

Load the scope with the finder base on bottom with the knobs in the safer position pointing up (and rings open downward). Then once secure and balanced turn the scope 180 and put your finder on top. Voila.

That is a strange finder position James, someone obviously needed to do that but you don't. You are so close to perfection with this setup! I'd suggest getting a dedicated TV Starbeam finder for your DM-6. Starbeams come up on the used market all the time. Tom Peters makes a little mount plate for it and it attaches to the alt bearing. Then you can mount any scope and use the DM-6 Starbeam finder, see the photo below.
Another idea is to use a vixen dovetail across the top of the rings for your finder shoe mount, or make a wood mounting plate, as you see in the photo. This will also brace the rings making for an even sturdier mounting.

The technicians of the NortheK are very precise and careful to all of their realizations, from the small one to the great diameter. A true jewel of mechanics that optics.

Nice Jim! I saw that on Long Perng's website and thought it looked interesting. Kinda like an ED doublet version of the TMB 92L! Have you had first light yet? Wonder if High Point will get a sample of that 110mm f/6 quad????

Roles reversed? The DSLR is on our club's TV 140 while the eyepiece is on my Canon 600mm/4.0L camera lens (150mm aperture). Actually the camera lens does make quite a decent visual OTA and also an excellent, fast, astro-imaging OTA. You can read the comparo in detail here. Later on I sold off the camera lens to somebody who was looking for a large aperture birding scope. He could not find a practically portable (i.e. reasonably short and lightweight) birding refractor with such a large aperture, and by then I had acquired a C14 Hyperstar (675mm focal length and f1.9). The C14 Hyperstar made my 150mm aperture look decidedly puny and slow

I offer this view of my 77mm f/13 Eikow, approximately 50 years old. It was given to me by a kind CNer this winter, the victim of domestic violence in its past, in need of some TLC. I have given it my all, and consider it now ready for prime time. It also performs beautifully…the objective, though it has a few edge chips, is exquisite.

The TEC compression adapter actually works quite well. But I also got the AP back with the triple thumbscrews, it's beefier than I expected... Still waiting for some good seeing but after a few brief outings I can already tell this is an excellent performer, and it's a match made in heaven with the DM-6 and the EM200 mounts.

What equipment did you use to mate the diagonal/eyepiece to the cannon lens? I am very interested.

This is my gal set up on my patio, which is where I do my solar observations. I have a series of N-S aligned marks around the apartment for other viewing points, definitely not DSO territory, though. This baby gives me a perfect star test optical figure and performs well at magnifications of 150 x to 200 x on planetary objects.

Nope..close though..it is the same lens...nothing more. The tube is new, the focuser is new. I disassembled that scope years ago..and replaced it with counterweights. It wasn't working as an astrograph...too fast an achro. Its old focuser got rebuilt and modified as the extra focuser for my 10"...the one with the new iris.
I used the other 4" R/P focuser I made for this new scope. It all worked out well.
Thanks for asking and remembering....

Just so you can see the difference. Note the longer dew shield...the longer tube and the shorter focuser. Not the same scope at all...the new one has a much shorter dew cap shorte tube and linger focuser tube.

Here's my multipurpose scope. Works well both day and night. It's hard to tell due to the camo but it's a Vixen ED114SS with a moonlite focuser.

Yes at F5.3 it's very short. Right around 19.5 inches to the back of the focuser and just under 10lbs for the OTA it's very small and lightweight for a 114mm scope. The scope has been modified so it's shorter then a factory ED114SS. The camo you see is actually a protective sleeve/dew shield I made but I mainly use it as a sun shield for my daytime viewing. With a FL of 600mm is great for wide field viewing. I have yet to push it past 100x so I don't know how well it will do at higher mags.

ED114SS is a great little scope.....Some really great imaging has been done with them. If its a good one you shouldnt have any trouble getting 250x or more out of it.
Not too sure on the camo though

152 f/8 test sample from 2005 made by JOC sent to Antares for evaluation before they later carried the line...without the 152 f/8 production model though in their lineup. The scopes like you now see now sold by ES again made by JOC...again without the f/8 option of a 6" class of instrument.
My personal evaluation then and now is exactly the same from star test results last night at 400 power. Yes there is CA but the level of spherical correction for a 152 f/8 achro is way beyond what many {inc. this buyer} would expect to see at the ep Perfect spot on collimation too.
Seen here on its new 2" steel legs/hub for an EQ5 combo... SOLID!

This is not a great photo but here is my "new to me but a decade old" Skywatcher 150 F/8. The Moonlite focuser upgrade is obvious but the Chromacor II attached to the Intes 2" diagonal is not. I believe the scope and Chromacor were matched by Markus Ludes back in 2002.

Jim that's awesome! Nice to see my TEC's brother being treated appropriately. Especially since some of your posts about it helped to influence me to buy one (and what absolutely great advice that was...)
I also love the pic above with the Meade. What a nice photo, your son looks so happy.
For that matter the Borg above it is also cool. I'd love to meet a scope Borg, but not a Star Trek Borg. Nice scopes, all...!!

I finally got a chance to put both my AR5 and my new AR6 on my CGEM side-by-side rig. It's a bit overloaded at this point, but after adding another counterweight it balanced right out and worked pretty well!

Yes when I set this one up in the backyard the neighbors blinds all go in place promptly in unison .....that scope ALWAYS gets a reaction when in clear view
That foam extension cap serves a couple of good purposes...keeps stray light well away from the views at the ep and keeps the front element dew free even on heavy nights.
Setting up the scope in the backyard has some positive elements too. Had a couple passing by last night take in and share with me some killer views of the Moon at different powers I was observing. His girlfriend said that was simply amazing and the chap I believe is now hooked on telescopes
Nice when you can share something with other people to change their way of thinking about things that they see but don't "see" on a regular basis in the evening sky

The mount has worked out quite nicely. It is very stable. The only issue is that when looking through the ES 127, it is difficult to reach the slow motion knobs. It is no problem with the smaller TV 85. I am very happy with this combination.

The new living room queen, 1989 blue tube AP178 on an AP900.
Been discussing this on another thread - glass looks fantastic, but she'd taken on some paint chips, scratches, and a lot of grime outside in the last 23 years.
Waiting for some matched touch-up paint, but after a thorough cleaning, polish, and wax, she's looking good enough to display already. I'm calling her Marilyn, with the cornflower blue eyes.
If the Clear Sky forecast holds up, first light should be tonight!

Thanks guys, I feel very lucky that everything fell into place for this. I've wanted a blue tube since I was a high school student browsing old S&Ts in the library. First light was great, I saw lots of fine detail on rings and disc of Saturn and M13 was a real treat.
The paint sure does chip easily. I'm thinking of having a trim ring / knife edge baffle made for the dew shield and perhaps clearcoating the whole tube after a thorough polish and touch up.
And she's surprisingly practical, she doesn't care for diamonds, but ZAOs are a girls best friends.
Regards, Andrew.

Thanks! I just got that Vixen 7X50 finderscope too, the same that comes with the TEC. I really got to liking that thing using it on the TEC140, it has a very nice low profile built-in illuminator, it's very accurate - and turns out it actually is not a bad fit with the Tak.

Hi Doug.
That was Ricard Pastis in the shaker. Normally pastis should be made in the manner of absinthe; chilled water dribbled slowly over a sugar cube in a slotted spoon, and into the glass containing the liquor. However, in the field, we have to work with what we have. So I shake my pastis in a shaker with ice, cold water and turbinado sugar, and pour it into a cocktail glass. Honestly, with a blindfold you wouldn't taste a difference.
Regards,
Jim

My latest refractor is a "department store" special compared to some of the jewels presented in this thread. However all those other telescopes are not mine, but this one is.
An ES AR152 that is waiting for an ES 34mm 68 deg EP, a Baader zoom and a Baader semi apo filter.
Here it is waiting for darkness sitting on an EQ6, we'll be peering at doubles tonight. The nearly full waxing gibbous moon is not good for galaxies.
