There is something to be said for a telescopes about which folks are prone to ask "who died and left you that?"

Congratulations.

Congratulations Ian.
Will you be attending Astrofest to see it in person?

Yes, Mr. Onions, I will be attending Astrofest. I will be the person at the front of the queue on Friday morning wearing running shoes and waiting for the doors to open

Thank you to everyone here for your enthusiasm.

I have now started a thread in the vendor section where I will post updates over the coming weeks on the build of the prototype. Incredibly, the clouds parted in London yesterday and I was able to test the first lens. I will post my first light thoughts on the vendor thread a little later.

Thanks.

Just a heads up, Richard has posted his first light report with the new lens over on U.K. Astrobuysell

http://www.astrobuysell.com/uk/

All is looking as expected for a top notch lens of this aperture. It looks as though TeleVue have used the same excellent AR coatings as on their apochromatic refractors. This is great news. As someone else mentioned, it is great having one of the top manufacturers putting their weight behind a classical achromat.

Did anyone here with the original F15 buy the wood case that Richard is offering with the AR101/15? If so, any chance of a picture? I am thinking of going for this option but would like to know how practical you find it for storing/transporting your scope.

Hi Ian

I don't think Richard was offering a wooden case with the original F15. I know I wasn't offered one with mine.

I have asked one of my clients, who is a joiner, to make some boxes for my refractors. I just need to give him some dimensions.

I've never offered a box for my refractors before, outside of a one-off LOMO build last year.

As I tend to take too long making things out of wood , I may have a local woodworker do these for me as required. However, I do have some concerns over the weight of a wooden box of this size and how it will effect shipping circumstances. I have a meeting later this week to look at this.

Just Back From Astrofest London new [Re: ianatcn]
      #5669288 - 02/08/13 03:36 PM

Well, I have just returned from the first day of Astrofest in London and spent some time with Richard and the new AR101/15. He has posted a picture on the vendors forum which is better than those I took on my 'phone. I will try and take a camera up with me tomorrow to get some better shots.

The telescope is a real beauty. The candy apple red color scheme is beautiful. Before seeing it I had considered going for a black and white color combination, but having seen the depth of color on the 'scope I am pretty sure I will go for that as it is Richard's signature color for this model. Looking at the prototype lens close up the coatings look similar to those on my TV127 in that if you look straight down the tube there appears to be no glass present - there was and at an oblique angle the coating manifested a slight purple tint.

The tube on the prototype was fitted with a fine brass 2" focuser by H.N. Irving & Sons of Teddington, London. Also, a sliding tube counterweight, brass tube finder and Parallax ring set. Finished off with Richards lovely brass dew shield. I have to say that it has the finest attention to detail that I have seen on any telescope in a long time. Even the brass screws used are the same wide slot, flat head design that Thomas Cooke used on his refractors.

Richard also had the last three F13's fitted with the Carton lens. These were for sale at a bargain price. When I left today the one with black matt tube had sold but the white tube and another in Candy Apple Red were still available mid-afternoon. If you want one get in quick!

Richard said he will be taking the AR101/15 to NEAF and as I passed to say goodbye to him who should be at the stand but David Nagler! I had a good chat with David at last years Astrofest and thoroughly enjoyed hearing of his insights into the development of the Ethos and Delos eyepieces. He must have been impressed with the use of the TeleVue name linked to this refractor - how could it be otherwise.

I hope those of you across the pond get as much of a kick out of seeing this telescope as I did when Richard takes it to NEAF this year.

N.B. For those of you in the UK please read colour for color

Well, more tomorrow.

Mr. Onions, I missed you at Astrofest! I took a few pics and had an interesting chat with David Nagler about the objective. They put a lot of work into ensuring they got the best from a two element design using modern coatings matched to the glass types. Attention to detail that fits in well with Richard's approach.
