Yet another TSA-120!!!
      #5816704 - 04/23/13 01:16 AM Attachment (180 downloads)

First of all, a big thank you to all who chimed in on my previous post "TSA-120... To upgarde or not to upgrade?". I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a like-new Takahashi TSA-120. I purchased it in like new condition from a fellow astromarter. The best part was that I was able to meet up with him and purchase it in person since we both like in Florida, a big plus as far as I am concerned. I am curently in Disney World and wouldn't you know it, SOLID CLOUDS & RAIN!!! The scope is for all i tents in purposes in brand new condition. It was purchased in January of this year and it has a 2012 serial number. I don't know when I will get to have first light (we only got to look at some trees when I was inspecting it for purchase) but as soon as I do I will comment on that here. Compared to my FS-102 it feels like it has a bit more heft which caught me by surprise since the weight difference is supposed to be about three pounds. I am planning on doing some side by side comparisons with my FS-102 and also with a friend's TEC 140 and then I will decide on the next course of action. 1) Sell the FS-102 and keep the TSA-120 or 2) Sell the TSA-120, keep the FS-102 and get a TEC 140. If I go with option 2, it will probably be a couple of years before I get around to that. For now, here is some photos for your enjoyment...

Love the look of the Berlebach tripod and binoviewers with the TSA.
Keep us posted on any developments, personally I think the TSA120 is the perfect size refractor, both for visual and a/p as well as reasonable portability. Love your first pic of the proud owner holding his new baby !

I am envious of you, Sergio. This is my dream scope, but it is out of my price range. Did you notice if it appeared front end heavy compared to your FS-102? Size-wise..they look somewhat similar..I guess since the FS-102 is f/8 and the TSA 120 is f/7.5. I hope you enjoy it!

You have too many SCTs. : )
I suggest you sell your Meade 12 ACF and your SV102ED and use that to help fund a TSA-120.

Well I did recently sell the SV 102ED by consignment with Stellarvue to put that money toward the SV 115 triplet. Still waiting for the 115, but should be here in 10-14 days. Hopefully this scope will last me a lifetime. Might sell the Meade 12 if I can downsize to the Meade 10 ACF glossy blue paint finish. Will probably always keep the C14 for deep sky targets at our astro clubs darker site.

Bill

Kunama, Joe C, Johnny, t.r., Bill Barlow, thanks.

Johnny, I am not sure yet. I really want a 3.5" Feathertouch, not because I need it since it is overkill for visual but I really like that focuser. I especially like the rotating system much more than on the 3".

I should be able to do some TSA-120/FS-102 comparisons sometime next week if we have good weather in Miami.

Speaking of good weather, tonight in Disney World the skies were totally clear so I took the TSA-120 outside of my hotel room and got to do a quick first light. I only looked at the Moon and Saturn but both looked really good and sharp. It was a quick view and I only had my Mark Vs with 24 Pans, a 21mm Ethos and a 13mm Ethos. Saturn was small but still looked sharp and clear. The moon was excellent but I was not able to come to focus with the Mark Vs without a Glasspath Compensator. I do not have any of those here with me so I will have to wait until I get home. A good thing that happened tonight was that there were some kids form Chile here for a cheerleading competition and they stopped by to look at Saturn and the Moon. They were all impressed and none had never looked through a telescope before. Anyways, I will post some more stuff once I get some more observing time in.

How is the stock focuser Sergio? I had heard that the TSA120 has an upgraded focuser with less image shift than earlier Taks. They certainly are gorgeous to look at.

Thanks EricCCD, StarDust1.

Johnny, the focuser is not too bad but it is not a FEathertouch. I don't think that anything comes close to the larger Feathertouch foucusers, they are just wonderful.

Hi Sergio,
Beautiful pictures of these scopes side-side. But where is the glass in your FS

Looking forward to hear how your samples of FS and TSA compare for you.

I did that test with my samples and found that at high powers, the FS has a cleanliness to the star images and planets that is comparable to how the objectives look in your picture. The TSA has a color free images that are just iIncredible though.

Hope you're in for some good weather soon

Looks great Sergio -

Hey, do you happen to know what the load capacity is for the stock focuser? I am thinking about getting one of these myself and dont no if I should keep the tak focuser, do the simple FT retrofit, are get an entire FT focuser system including the adapter to the OTA. Anyone no the answer here?

Cheers

So far I am happy with the Takahashi focuser. The 3" & 3.5" Feathertouch focusers are better as far as I am concerned but perhaps not at the added expense. For the moment I can live with the stock Tak focuser. What I am on the fence about is which scope I should keep. I am not totally sure if the 18mm difference in aperture is enough to justify the move but I still have not had the chance to do a head to head comparison and probably wont until I get my new mount. As far as the Feathertouch retrofit is concerned, I had one on my FS-102 and I thought it was OK. More to come when I get a good night to put both scope through the paces.

Well, after much back and forth I have decided to keep the FS-102 and sell the TSA-120. I have decided that the 18mm jump in aperture was not enough to justify keeping the TSA-120. It was a very tough decision as the TSA-120 is one heck of a scope and I am still kinda regretting having sold it but in the long run I think that the best course of action will be to keep the FS-102 and get a TEC-140 or sell the FS-102 and get an FS-128. I kinda got a bit of aperture fever when I saw the photo of a TEC-140 on a Nova Hitch Mount (I have one coming) and really got excited at getting a bigger scope for it. After a month or so of thinking it over, I have decided to let go and stick to the original plan and keep teh FS-102. If I want a bigger scope, I will get it later in addition to the FS-102 unless I get an FS-128. I need to keep in mind that this was always a grab n go project and if I go too big, it might defeat the purpose. ARGGGG!!!!!!

The TEC140 is unique in that it offers so much, for such a small package. I think with the Nova you can pull off grab and go...I did with my old 140 and a CG5!

Although it gets rave reviews here, you might want to consider if even a Tec 140 will be a significant enough jump for you in aperture. Although there are those who disagree, much conventional wisdom around here seems to be that the best complement to a 4 inch refractor is a 10 inch or larger Newtonian Dob. Even going that far or larger, objects like galaxies still appear as grey fuzzies. Maybe the most noticeable difference is with globular clusters. You would definitely see deeper with a Tec 140, but consider if going from 4 to 5.5 inches would be (relatively speaking) more than just another incremental increase.

Edit: Ah, you already have a 16 inch Zambuto Starstructure!!! So you should be set?

The "best" complement to a 4" refractor will vary according to one's needs. For instance, given my observing conditions, time constraints, and personal preferences a 10" dob or bigger didn't seem a reasonable choice when I wanted something larger than my 105mm apo. I chose a TEC 140 and was happy with the increase in aperture, and when the opportunity came to trade up for an AP 155, I was happier still. With a DM6 and a Rob Miller tripod, the 155 is virtually a grab and go, which suits my style perfectly. My 105 now sits in the corner, waiting for me to take it along when I travel by airplane.

Jim, I think that you will be very happy. Also, there is a chance that I might be able to score an FS-128. If I do, I might then sell the FS-102 and not worry about getting a larger aperture scope. I think that a Tak FS-128 will be a happy place.

I don't think you could loose going after an FS 128. Those scopes have become very popular (along with it's big Daddy the FS 152) and for good reason!! They are magnificent scopes, especially for visual observations. Good luck!!

Mr. Yoshida from Japan gave the Tak 120 and the Tak 128 the same score (73 on his 2010 list) when it comes to “planetary viewing”. The Tak 120 will also be more portable than the 128. I think it’s going to be difficult to get a refractor that offers more performance and will also be as portable as the Tak 120.

Lucky indeed, they come up for sale so rarely and then get snapped up quickly. Such a beautiful little scope and ever so sharp and colour free! I have never really focused my attention on diffraction rings and star tests but another thread about "diffraction" today caught my eye which showed the "perfect diffraction ring" patterns which are just about exactly what I see in this little refractor.
