Thanks, had not seen this one. However, it's the same price as the Orion FPL-53 triplet, so hard for me to justify (same comment with the WO).

If your requirements are flexible enough to go up to 90mm, another gem is the William Optics Megrez-90 doublet, which uses FPL-53 glass and is f/6.2. Although like the Onyx it too is regrettably discontinued, Megrez-90s periodically come up for sale used on A...a...you knowwhereImean. The scope is also reasonably lightweight for 90mm, coming in just over 7 lbs.

The only reason I don't use my Megrez-90 as much as I once did is that I got a Televue NP-101 - but just recently I used the Megrez 90 frequently over the nearly three weeks my NP-101 was off at Televue for servicing, and was reminded just how good the optics of the Megrez-90 really are. Yeah, bottom line is that my particular Megrez-90 is unlikely to ever go up for sale (too valuable as a backup for situations or times when I can't or don't want to bring the NP-101 along) but with a bit of patience, you can probably still find one for sale (ditto for the Onyx).

Looks like the same scope distributed by TS in Europe. It's a nice looking scope.

What about the AWB Celestron 80ED deal?

http://store.astronomerswithoutborders.org/index.php?main_page=product_info&a...

At f/7.5 (a little longer than you asked for) it will have better color correction than at f/6 and it is FPL-53 as you requested.

I knew about this scope but did not realize it had the FPL-53 element. At that price, compromising on focal length could be an option since I could always get the 0.85x reducer/flattener that is (was?) available for these 80mm f/7.5 doublets. But by the time you do that and add in a good focuser you are back up around the price of one of the more deluxe f/6 scopes...there is no free lunch it seems.

One issue I have is that I already made an investment in the Orion flattener for short refractors (the one that doesn't change the focal length) in anticipation of finding an f/6 'fractor for AP. Maybe the simple answer is that I just need to be more patient in the used market. One of the SW Equinox came up on Amart last week but I was too slow on the trigger. In fact I was 0-3 on Amart items last week, which was really annoying

No CA as far as I can tell on the 80MM EON. Never believe anyone that hasn't used the scope talk about it.

I think you should sell me yours. That 120 needs to be used more often.

Jarrod,

I keep telling people that the EON is the best scope. Its so good random strangers walk up to look through it even at sunset.

If you don't need the F/6 focal ratio for visual, the C80ED seems like a good way to go...

Jarrod,

One thing, you will need a field flatner for the F6.25 scopes. Especially with a larger chip. This was with a 25 by 17MM chip and as you can see even with the field flatner, the extreme edge of field has a few oblong stars, without a field flatner there is noticeable star elongation.

I use this one:

Thanks. I already have the Orion flattener for short refractors. Talk about putting the cart before the horse....
