I am reposting this from the Computer section here, if this is inappropriate feel free to delete it, but I thought that some folks here might want to jump aboard too!
--
Hi everyone! I'm not sure if you all have heard of Einstein@home but take a look: http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/
It runs on the same principles as SETI @ home but instead of searching for aliens we're searching for gravity waves. I started a Cloudy Nights team at:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/team_display.php?teamid=518
I'd love to have you join! Donate your spare computer cycles to benefit the study of the cosmos. Hope to see you all joining! Let's see how far we can take this team.

Hey Mike, thanks for signing up! I hope we can some more people aboard.
Bishamon, you could be a Cloudy Nights distributed computing powerhouse if you did both! Generations of Cloudy Nights forum members would stand in awe at your contributions to the search for aliens and gravitational waves! :-)
Oh, by the way, how do you like your Sky-Watcher 90mm mak?

Mabe I'll set up both, so that my computers aren't idle when there are no SETI work units available.

Thanks for offering to donate some cycles to the team, Bishamon. We only have four members so far, and it looks like only two of us are active so we could definitely use some more help. If anyone has any questions about the team or the project (http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/) feel free to ask!

Our team has now swelled to 9 members! Right now 3 are active but I read on another forum that it can take up to 1 week for your name to appear in the active column, assuming that you have actually analyzed some work units.
Bishamon, are you using BOINC 4.19?
Nathan, thanks for signing up! Don't you mean that distributed.net conflicts with Cloudy Nights? ;-) Let all your buddies on Cloudy Nights know that we're trying to help ol' Albert.
Some other news regarding the team - our rank is now up to 349 out of 1,000 - we have shot up from being 432 just yesterday! Great work everyone!
Also, a link of interest to those of you on the team:
http://www.boincstats.com/stats/team_graph.php?pr=einstein&id=518
These are the stats for the team compiled by boincstats.com. Their numbers are typically several hours old, but it gives you a good feel for where the team is and where it's going.
Anyway, thanks again to all that have joined. Hopefully we can break the 10 member barrier this week.
Well, back to hunting gravity waves for me!

Hey, that's great news! The more people we get on this team the better! We're currently up to #163 out of 1,000 teams - we've shot up over 200 places in the past week and a half.
Anyway, hope that some more people decide to sign up and help us look for gravity waves!

Searching for aliens surfing waves, Sounds fun to me. has any gravity wave been found yet? which has the better chance of happening? aliens visit us all the time and we still cant find them.

Hi jsatan! We'd love to have you aboard the team. We're doing GREAT! Ranked #117 out of 1,000 teams so far - I think we'll break into the top 100 soon. We currently have 11 members, 8 of which are active.
If you would like to help the search for gravitational waves (ripples in the fabric of space and time) predicted by Einstein's relativity we'd love to have you join our team. You can ask any questions in this thread or PM me. The link to join the Cloudy Nights team is in my signature.
Thanks for joining jsatan!

lol. I've joined, downloaded and now crunching. I know what grav waves are, I'm into that sort of thing, well if I wasnt I dont think I'll be here.
How do you detect them. watch for slight changes in other object path and see if there is a pattern moving down the line.
How fast does these things move?
I'll install the software on the comps at where I work, (even tho I'm leaving tomorrorw) let that sit there for a while. as I was runnign a mas network for university this should give it a boost if even only for a short time.
Just so peopel dont think I'm strange (as the name may inply that) My real name is Jonathan, My nik name is just an old school nik name and I've used from then onwards,
How much are we lagging behind the other teams?

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for signing up. We've moved up to #116 right now. I love this stuff - all teams are in it for the betterment of knowledge. It's great to see so many people wanting to help learn more about this amazing universe.
Anyway, took this from a site about Einstein@home to answer your question about how to detect gravitational waves:
"The waves are detected with perpendicular pairs of laser beams located at each facility. When a gravitational wave passes by, it can change the lengths of the paths the laser beams follow by tiny amounts. LIGO and GEO 600 scientists observe gravitational waves by comparing these changes in the laser beam paths. Longer laser beams mean greater sensitivity. The lasers beams travel back and forth between pairs of mirrors that are 600 meters apart in GEO and four kilometers apart in the LIGO facilities, which makes these observatories very sensitive. In fact LIGO should be able to measure changes in the laser beam paths as small as one-hundred-millionth the diameter of a hydrogen atom."
As far as I know, the speed of gravity is not known yet. I hate to make concrete claims, after all if there's one thing science has shown us it's that our knowledge at any time is woefully incomplete. However, the speed limit would be the speed of light based on our current understanding of the universe via relativity, but nobody is yet 100% certain exactly what speed gravity goes at. Some experiments have indicated it is within 20% of the speed of light which would match up with relativity. So if the sun vanishes (no more solar observing ) then we'd have about 8 minutes of light and about 8 minutes of feeling the sun's gravity before the ripples in spacetime would hit our planet and release us from the sun's gravitational grip. Again, this is based on what I have read and understood and based on our current understanding of gravity. Newton's gravity stood for 300 years, so there is reason to believe that our current understanding of gravity is also incomplete. See the recent stories about leaking gravity and star formation.
I am a layman so if anyone is more knowledgeable about this please feel free to correct me or gift us with more knowledge!
As for our ranking, we're on this page:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/top_teams.php?sort_by=expavg_credit&offset=100
and some interesting stats about our team is at: http://www.boincstats.com/stats/team_graph.php?pr=einstein&id=518
but these stats only update a few times per day.
Thanks for joining!

There's also a free resource here which offers user graphics for signatures (or web pages) w/stats, via donations of capital and hosting resources.
These also keep track of other BOINC projects in case anyone's working on SETI or whatnot, and allows you to customize the color schemes. (Note: mine only displays Einstein since it's the only project I'm running.)
Ex.1 (<1kb):
While you can also use your own hosted background image if you really want to get artistic, be advised that doing so creates a much larger file size, which likely will exceed the signature guidelines on this forum.
Ex.2 (~42kb in my case):
Just thought I'd pass it along for anyone interested.

According to the stats page, the team is moving steadily upwards. That shows the previous "Highest World position ever" at 146. It's likely that earlier in the thread when it was noted that you'd entered the top 100, someone was probably looking at Recent Average Credit (which is the default on the "top teams" link from the UWM home page) rather than Total Credit.
In terms of RAC, the CNF Team is listed at #88 (at the time of this posting).

I was looking at Total Credit which places us 134, which to my knowledge would be the true ranking. RAC would show that we placed 88th in recent processing of info for the project.

I'm in. All my caches ran out on seti@home (despite the fact that I kept LARGE caches) so the machines were idle. They are running parallel setups on seti@home but will soon force all to switch to Boinc so I went ahead and moved the seti stuff also - but lost 8000 units in the process.

Not sure if this was mentioned but you can set BOINC to run einstein "Always" . I've been doing it all day at work while using SSH clients, Lotus Notes, several web browsers (nothing too CPU intensive) and I forgot it was turned on! By default it will probably only run when your puter is inactive. Set it to "Always on/run" unless your doing something CPU intensive. Like:
1. Build/compile software 2. Using some IDE like WSAD or similar (development tools) 3. Playing games or using graphically instense apps
You can always "Suspend" before using these apps then reanable for normal computer usage. Again I don't even realize its running and I'm on a 1Ghz laptop thats 4 years old.

Anyway, glad to see everyone is still interested. What a great team and a great forum!

Redvis, on my PC he is obviously running a second set, but the status for the first one is "waiting to be sent" (I don't know if it appears this way in English, I'm re-translating something that has been translated in a French version of BOINC). Is there something I must do?

Hi tlee and matt, thanks for joining!
tlee - I have this problem too. I think it has to do with the new version of BOINC (4.25) as I get a blank screen as well. I have not investigated this yet but I'll do some research and get back to you. Don't worry - you're not alone! ;-)
matt - don't worry about the "waiting to be sent" message. Your set will be sent when the second set you're working on reaches about 85% or higher. This confused me too until I realized that it is just the way BOINC works. So the short answer is - no, there is nothing you need to do.
Thanks for joining! We have 22 members and are ranked 88 out of 1850 teams according to Boincstats (www.boincstats.com) and hopefully we'll continue to grow!

Oh, and just an update that there is a new version of BOINC available at http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ just go to "Download BOINC" and choose version 4.45. It's got some great new features!

To be honest, it's probably a better idea to do Einstein @ Home, that way we can advance our own science and either find them ourselves, or make them feel comfortable with contacting us. Just my opinion.

I'll look into joining, I need to adress some stability issues, my system is overclocked, and it's summer, so I might have to let it run while not overclocked so it won't crash. Also It's been a while since I cleaned out all the dust in my PC, so that would probably help.

I signed up to Einstein@ home and climateprediction.net about a month ago, but I've had Einstein on pause for most of that time so the climateprediction.net can run. I decided to detach from the climate thing. That one still projects 2,440 hours to completion. My PC could end up crashing long before that. Einstein completes a cycle in 20 hours on average.

I joined the team. Will it count the credits I already had towards the team?
BTW I show up as Justin on the team list.
We are at #121 in the teams rankings for recent avg credit.
We are at #88 in the teams rankings for total credit.

Still having overheating problems with my CPU at home but I continue to run this at work. Going to be getting a new CPU soon so hopefully that will help! We have 33 members now by the way!

My own update.
I'm at 10,039 credited points now. There's no way I'll ever catch up to our leaders.
Our 33 member team stands at 973,519 points and 2,470 recently credited points.
We are at #117 in the teams rankings for recent avg credit.
We are at #98 in the teams rankings for total credit.
I think we need some more people to join in.

I think we can easily move up if we get some more members to join in. We seem to be moving down in the rankings right now though.

Yeah, we need another "recruiting drive" to build this up. I am hoping to get a new motherboard and processor at home which will hopefully run cooler (looking at a dual core Pentium 4) than my current hot setup.

Maybe you should post invitation in more sections on this forum. After all, this forum is full of people ready to participate, I know that. They just have to find out for this project and voila.

Has anyone thought of having a sub-board for BOINC related projects, that way people could actually have direct access to threads in one place, and in effect gain more people onto the team?
BTW, I'm just heading over to Einstein to join CN and contribute my 11,000 worth of credit

That's actually a good idea. I think there are a few CN teams out there for various BOINC things. Anyone else have any feelings about a special board?

Might be hard to get other opinions for it, this forum doesn't exactly pop out as BOINC That's exactly why it would be nice to have one that does I think I'll write one of the mods to see...

Thanks Matt for allowing that thread to be sticky for a while, and thanks for merging it into this thread. Now we must work on recruiting people, whether it be for Einstein or for Seti or any other BOINC project. Would an email to CN members inviting them to take a look at BOINC projects for their idle machines be feasible?

Good question Stefan.
I think that anyone that leaves their PC on in standby mode 24/7 might as well put that otherwise wasted electricity to work furthering these important Scientific BOINC projects.

Remember the English teacher said, "I before E, except after C." When Einstein was at Princeton, he was seen going to a movie on campus. The movie was entitled, "The Crawling Eye." Ask me how I know this. Bill

So true, although some will argue that 100% use will result in higher electrical bill, but the scientific knowledge really should outweight that cost

I just read an article about how Play Station 3 owners can use thier idle machine to participate in a project called folding@home. I wonder if einstein@home will introduce the same functionality for PS3. The PS3 has some serious power. IBM is using the same chip in their new supercomputer for the department of energy. That computer is supposed to reach speeds of a petaflop per second, or 1,000 trillion calculations per second. I think if einstein@home updated their application for PS3 usage, it would really make a difference. Not that I don’t think that the folding@home project is not a good program, I just prefer to help science in a different way.
Personally I don’t see myself getting a PS3 anytime soon. But it does look like a great system that I might consider someday. Plus if I can run Einstein@home on it that would be an extra bonus.

I will admit, the nice thing about the majority of BOINC projects is that you can let them run and totally forget about them...
Apparently I have 94,442 credits...
Anyone else still crunching out there?

Joined the Einstein@home CN team. Since I'm playing with a Linux box, I thought I'd try getting BOINC to run on it. Seems to be working. The CN team is WAY down the list, I see. Even behind "Guam Teachers" GUAM TEACHERS!!! How many teachers can they have on Guam???? Hubert

Is anyone having a problem running BOINC under Vista? It does not seem to be stable in my setup...
Oh, also, does anyone have a clue how to get it startup WITHOUT being "blocked program" and having to manually start it running?
Thanks,

Well, after hitting a milestone within SETI@home, I switched to Einstein at home (member of the CN Team on both counts).
Actually I couldn't quite give up SETI, so I set my PC to do 80% Einstein / 20% SETI.

ATTENTION!!!
To the SETI@home people:
You need to visit this website or contact your Congressman. If House Resolution H.R. 3737 doesn't pass, the Arecibo Telescope and SETI@home Project will be shut down.

It is interesting that late in life Einstein wrote “I consider it quite possible that physics cannot be based on the field concept, that is, on continuous structures. Then nothing remains of my entire castle in the sky, including the theory of gravitation, but also nothing of the rest of modern physics.”
This means that without a spacetime continuum the gravity waves predicted by General Relativity are a mathematical fabrication without substance. The only alternative is a discontinuous universe where atoms are synchronously projected in a succession of space frames that are linked up by light, as in a cosmic holographic movie. Each synchronous projection alternates with timeless and formless quantum frames that collectively constitute a conjugate quantum energy field that is orthogonal to the integrated fabric of space and time. Atoms are both waves and particles at the same time, consistent with the Planck constant. There is a great deal of evidence to indicate that this is the case. At the website www.cosmic-mindreach.com you may find the website article Gravity, Quantum Relativity & System 3 of considerable interest. The website offers a universal methodology that complements traditional approaches to the sciences, and a number of related articles. (Sorry I can't make the link work directly for some reason.)
Best wishes, Bob

What's that tell you -- all of you? Is SETI maybe barking up the wrong tree, or is the tree so vast and so old that the faint messages sent from among its network of branches either have not yet arrived or perhaps raced past us and faded away long before we began listening? I too would like to know...

I'm still going back and forth with Einstein and SETI. SETI has the new CUDA software out... if you have a newer NVIDIA graphics card, it will use the card and your CPU to crunch numbers. Seemed to really speed things up with SETI.
I hear Einstein @ home is working on a CUDA version, which is good news.

The BOINC application (the "umbrella" for all the associated projects) is highly configurable, and each individual project (i.e. SETI@Home, Einstein@Home, etc.) can be configurated, user-defined. For example: apart from CPU configurations, SETI@Home let's the user choose to run just the "traditional" (in terms) SETI application, and/or Astropulse apps, and the latter eats a **lot** more of CPU resources. Currently I'm running SETI@Home, MilkyWay@Home and Cosmology@Home. These are reliable applications from known sources. To choose your project(s) please visit http://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php A lot of info is also available there. Regards, Walt
