I did post this in the OTO.....just because I didnt know where else to put it, forgive or delete the duplication. I thought you guys in here might be interested.
Stardust at Home Ive been following this mission since its conception. 6 years after launch its bringing back samples. NASA/Berkley/JPL is looking for volunteers to search thru the aerogel for grains from comet Wild 2 and interstellar dust. There is some training......a test....and if you pass....then you download a virtual microscope and search for grains. In recognition of the critical importance of the Stardust at home volunteers, the discoverer of an interstellar dust particle will appear as a co-author on any scientific paper by the Stardust at home collaboration announcing the discovery of the particle.
Foolishness?.................maybe.....but I signed up anyways. My pre-registration was accepted.

I saw this new @Home program in the news. It sounds interesting. I think that a lot of people will like this being that they are each involved in the science.

Ok.........Update........
This project is a GO. The project will officially begin at 11:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time on August 1st, 2006. An email is being sent to all of the 115,000 pre-registrants to let them know that they are ready to go. All are welcome to participate whether you pre-registered or not.
Click on the stardust link in the first post to take the tutorial and get ready for the test!
They did mention.....its all about having fun....if your not having fun....stop doing it. But...its all very serious science.

They must be updating the site right now, access has been restricted, luckily I went through the tuturial a few minutes beforehand I'm interested to see how it will all work out, I imagine the site will be rather slow loading the first few hours as the initial onslaught connects

I was working on the callibration movies when I was booted off. Login has been temporarily disabled in order to "maintain" the website. I guess response has been overwhelming!

Stardust@home is temporarily unavailable because of a hardware malfunction. Please bear with us as we work on fixing the problem.
Oh well, I did get through 15 movies I do believe, with 3 tracks discovered
The site was slower than slow though...they should of let registration/testing begin earlier to ease the flow and then bring up the VM...

They did a pre-registration a while back for a few hours over a weekend to see how the site would handle the load. It did fine. But since then, with the pushing back of the opening date AND a new site, they didn't anticipate the overwhelming response that they got.
It's 5:07 here and it is still not working.

Stardust has been down since last night
I did get on the message boards before it went down and someone had posted a screenshot of a movie they had viewed that had a woman's picture in it...Then someone on boincsynergy reported a ring in his movie, interns proposing/playing a joke? Pity, in poor taste too, what a way to disgrace a project...Then again maybe Stardust didn't realize that and its all server problems or maybe a combo of both.
I think I was able to get through 50 movies with a score of 11...not positive though...

As of 3:00 P.M. CDT, Stardust is back up. According to the site, a "system maintenance procedure that caused random images to be mixed in with the focus movies for a period of time" was the culprit. I'm off to further hunt for the little buggers!

I've been searchin' for 15mins or so. All is good but slow. I've noticed a couple of movies that focus the top of the foam to far up or down the slider. I've been putting these in the "Bad focus" catigory. How 'bout you?

I've been finding quite a few out of focus ones, I'm a bit ticked off at their calibration movies, I put out of focus for a few of them and I'm down to 61% sensitivity...
I've gone through 101 movies with a score of 30

Yes. I've also had a few that never focused at all, and some that, as I was in the process of focusing, seemed to suddenly morph into a different aerogel segment. I marked those "Bad Focus" as well.
I guess there are still some kinks to be worked out.

Wowy! Warp speed fast Now its addictive, I've been going since 8 am
I startd the day off with a score of 46, now its 160 Gone through 400 movies, and managed to raise my sensitivity score from 61% to 87%
Anyone finding any tracks other than those from the calibration movies?

"Now its addictive"
Ive been working nonstop and have not been able to get tested on stardust at home. I was wondering after hours of looking at movies, are you experiencing any mental fatigue....that would decrease your accuracy?

I know that when the airconditioner broke it was getting tough to concentrate on the movies, then the site went down, luckily, I got of the room feeling woozy...I might have to shut down my machine if it gets any hotter, till the air gets repaired...

Hang in there! I missed a few days myself, and was surprised to find the number of registrants/participants had doubled. Since the movie distribution is random, you still have a chance to discover a bona fide track. I was very gung ho in the beginning, but life has a way of intervening in the best of plans.
I intend on stardusting (I like your verb!) when I can work it in. Remember what they said -- it's supposed to be fun!

Hey I took a 2 hour break and only dropped 2 places!
I'm kind of eager to find another track that's non-calibrated....its been a few days since then...
Stardusting is strangely addictive...
^That should be made a word!
**Edit, speaking of the devil, I just found a track! Out of 103 viewings, 25 have found that one Guess I'm on to something!

Most of my StarDusting happens in 1-2hr incraments. I'm improving slowly but surely.
Read a thread about a guy who ODed on Stardusting and quit. He was in the top 5 at the time.
And, yes it is very addicting. Almost been late for work because of it.

How much time do the top 5 spend on this thing? The top guy has around 10,000 points or something...yeash...

I was so busy all this week I didn't get much of chance to go through stardust until today, I've moved up to 805th place I started the day back at 950 some...slow going...
