PST serial # list.
      #1244926 - 11/10/06 12:22 PM

All:
This thread is just a convenient place for me to post the results of the list of PST serial numbers I've been collecting. It is NOT intended as a means of bashing any manufacturer, really is isn't! It's for informational purposes only. This way we can request the serial # from a seller on A-mart or wherever, and have some confidence in the scope we recieve.

I'll update with edits this first post until the system won't let me edit it, then I'll scroll down and make a new posting of the list.

Thanks to everyone who has participated, together we can make a difference!
Rich

Good job!, Rich.

Maybe Erika can add this thread to the "sick PST" stickie at the top of the forum.

I just want to add that Meade/Coronado seems to be "stepping up" in working this problem out with the new clear blue objective design, no questions asked as far as proof of purchase and paying for the shipping both ways(at least for those in CONUS). Also the latest repaired one's seem to be in good order. Hopefully, those who had problems getting thier PST's fixed are getting those issues resolved.
Of course I'll let everyone know how my old one turns out, once I get it back.

      #1245831 - 11/10/06 10:20 PM Attachment (339 downloads)

Hi Richard and all,

Last Sunday, I've went into Adorama in NYC to buy a new PST. This time I personally wanted to inspect the scope before purchase. It looked great w/ bluish-clear objective. Looked like newer model and the certificate confirmed it showing Oct. 2006. So I bought the scope w/ big smile on my face . Next day as my wife was test driving the new scope, she discovers a cluster of "tiny bubbles" in the middle of the objective . Yes, we've decided to return this as well. I'm sorry, I forgot to write down the serial # before return it . However, I do remember it was like #102xxx. I can call them up on Sunday 12th and find out if you wish.

I've attached a pix showing the bubbles.

One more thing. I've noticed this "bubbled" scope had a serial # outside of the box so that salesman can check the # before opening the box. My first one from Discovery Store did not. Only way was to open the box and check either by looking at the side of the scope or the certificate.

Again, thanx for this list. It's a valueable list for new and old buyers. I wonder how long this list will become!.

Steven

Steven:
Too bad about the PST, too bad 'bout the serial # too! If you can get it that's cool, you might need it yourself! The list is narrowing down the start # for the gold objectives, and the end of the gold ones as well.

I don't think that the bubbles are the same problem as the "rust" They look to be a common problem when you cement a lens together. You have be careful to place the two lens halves together just right or you can get the bubbles. In any case Quality Control should have caught the problem.

Yes, Dave. This is a new QC problem. I don't know if this "bubbles" can be seen on the old or gold objective models but, it is apparent in the clear bluish newer models. I recommend all of you to re-inspect your scopes every angle under sun-light......

Just to recap:: My first purchased PST from Discovery Store had about 70% "rust" right out of the box-see serial #99760.

When the new shipment comes in I'll update you all.

Richard: I'll find out the serial # tomorrow.

By the way, for all the locals who lives around NYC area, I had an excellent service w/ Adorama especially salesman name David F. Note: This was my first business w/ them. I'm not affiliated w/ Adorama just a satisfied customer.

What shipping method is are they paying for if you are CONUS? I can use USPS Priority Mail over here for the same price as if Stateside. Or are they insisting on things like UPS/FedEx?

United Parcel Service is picking up my PST. If your're paying for the shipping to the United States, I don't think it matters who you use.

Let me add my serial number. It is 94606. My PST still has the rust condition on it. I'm holding off on letting Meade touch it. I get the sense that they have a bit of a learning curve to go through before they develop the necessary skill to repair these PSTs consistently well.

It looks like I have the dubious honor of being #1 on the list now!

Great idea, Rich!

Hola, Rainer!
I'm sorry to see the rust in your lens! Not good!
I see also the red paint on the threads and that both of them have the red paint.... Is this to keep things from unscrewing?
What's with the scratched up hole? It just looks like sloppy workmanship.
I've never heard of a BF30, who makes it?

BF30 is a blocking filter, Rich. http://www.coronadofilters.com/products_blocking.html

Rainer, did you drill that hole in it?

Hi Erika and Richard,

Those BF 30 are the blocking filter which give you 30mm of circular view through field.

No I did not drill the hole, they are there and there are 2 of them in order you can turn them for srewing them into the 2" barrel. The BF 30 does have 2 of the blocking filters.

Yes the red paint is in order to avoid a turning of the filter insets in the barrel. As they ahve 2 of them and they have to be arranged in a precise direction in order to avoid ghosting.

One of the BF30 came with a loose inner filter and gave me a huge quantity of ghosts when using it. So I had to adjust it myself by pure trial and error until I found out how to avoid the ghosting.

Hi Richard,

Look this is how a BF30 looks like.

http://www.rainerehlert.com/astro/Sol/BF30-02.jpg

Of course that is the 2" barrel only. Is has on top of it another part which accepts 2" nosepieces like from an Eyepiece or a Diagonal.

Davo:
Could you post an image of your objective here so we can see what a sick gold-coated objective looks like? As you can see from the list, scopes with SNs like yours generally have blue (and sick) objectives. I'm extremely curious about your scope's objective. How easy is it to see into the lens?

I've gotta PM Daniel in Illinois (#97491) and get him to post an image of his scope too, though his isn't sick. It may be that he got his repaired and they put a gold objective in as part of the repair.

Rainer:
So the hole in the retaining ring is for a spanner. I had thought that was a possibility, but didn't say so in the post. I can clearly see the cloudiness at the edge. It's back to Meade with that one, I'm so sorry for you!

Here's the latest list. Erika had been modifying the first post for me (thank you, Erika!), but I think some folks have been missing the list because they (like me) let their computer take them to the "new" post at the current end of the thread, not to the head of the thread. So to save time, I'll post the list here at the end of the thread and thus ensure that it'll get seen more easily.

Davo:
It does look gold, but it may be that it has yellowed, like Jim7728s scope yellowed.
His was blue, then the whole thing changed to yellow!
Your image shows walls behind the OTA that look like they're "peach" coloured...
The reflected image of the wall color looks yellower...

Your 98670 serial number puts you in the "Blue" camp, though...
Unless I'm reading too much into the serial numbers than's good for me...
Once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken.
Either way, it goes back to Meade... Sigh!

Richard

I think the whole PST community has to be grateful to you for compiling this list and making the public aware of the extent and seriousness of the problem. However, you are not a Meade/Coronado employee, and I for one still find it a strange that nothing official has been said, despite you evidentially proving that the problem does extend to far more than the originally stated number of units (200 from a sequential batch), and also appears to be impacting units outside of this supposed "oxidation" run, Russ hinted at.

Surely the decent thing for any company to do (and I can cite my own, who, when we detected a problem with a large synthesiser power supply, immediately put out a webpage and press release on the matter), would be to state

1: That they are aware of this issue, and that users affected by it, should be able to return their unit to be repaired with no cost to them or questions asked, if they have the rust problem.

2: Obviously quell any fears users may have about the safety compromise (or not) that this problem would induce in their solar scopes. People are using their eyes to look at the Sun, and any hint of a problem, could be one which worried consumers. I believe their is no saftey issue, but to have no officially posted from their own website, confirmation of this, is somewhat worrying I feel.

Meade are a fine company, and a world leader in astronomical products. The impact and fallout this may have on the entire solar industry (as people could just pass on "Chinese WHsper style" messages about solar viewing in general being dangerous,), could be stopped by a simple statement.

Not everybody affected reads this website, or indeed any forums, but most owners of a product will visit the official company homepage and forums.

It just makes common, moral and financial sense (long term) to be open and clarify the problem, once and for all, and not rely on the good will of people like yourself, and others on this forum (including the moderators who have done a sterling job in keeping the sticky threads relating to the PST rust issue going) to do their work for them

Just my 2 cents...

NickH:
I think you are mistaken. Their is no post that states that the "rust" problem involved "200 from a sequential batch". No one has ever posted how many units were affected by this problem. I did state in one of my posts that I talked to Andy Lunt from Coronado at NEAF last year & that he said that he made up "about 200" of the gold objectives as a test to fix the problem & that it was successful but that it was too costly for production.

I stand corrected, "about 200" to fix the problem led me to believe it was only this number. Seems like it is closer to the thousands though sadly. I really do hope to see some positive "large scale" action on this soon. Thanks all for your feedback and input, it's helping a few guys in the UK get this resolved also.

Thanks, Gregor!
Things seem to have calmed down on the PST front, though it might be that folks are afraid of TOS infractions. They shouldn't be, it should be easy enough (I suppose, though I don't have a sick scope myself) to just bite your tongue (fingers?) if you find yourself getting hot under the collar! Remember, friends don't let friends post when angry! (Ugh! bad joke, sorry!)
It DOES seem that scopes are getting fixed or replaced, maybe this is the cause of the calm.
Either way, here's the latest iteration of the list:

Hi all,

Just organized getting my own PST (#100051 - reflective blue) fixed due to this problem. Meade were very friendly and helpful on the phone and expected turnaround is 3 weeks for the repair.

Very happy with their customer support here.

I got mime from B&H when they first got released and I've been happy with it.

I haven't used the PST since the spring, but it was getting slightly dimmer as the months went on, after about the first six months. Not sure how it looks now. I guess I should take it out for a test spin.
Here is a pic of the objective from last autumn next to the 90mm. Under natural lighting, the color is silver coating but the browness was evident from the outwards in, IIRC.

It sure looks like your PST has "The Dreaded Creeping Rust" syndrome!
Look closely at the various pix here and at your scope and make the call to Coronado if it proves to be sick. I've added the Coronado contact info to the bottom of the list so we can all find it when we need it.

Da nada, Bill, think nuttin' of it! It seemed to be the logical thing to do.
There's still that gap in numbers between the sick ones and the gold ones...
I'd like to close that gap completely as well as the gap on the other side of the gold run...
Thanks for your input, Jim, I included it in the post above!

Thanks, Doug! The list keeps growing and growing. Still haven't found the start of the gold objective group or the start of the blue & clear group.
Considering that your PST is in the blue & clear category, you probably won't ever have any problems. Enjoy!

My PST had the rusty lens problem, and I had it repaired recently. My serial number is 95009. My old objective was opaque and silvery. I now have the blue transparent objective, and it works well without any apparent bubbles or defects.

Russ at Coronado was very helpful, and it took about a month to repair.

Hi there. Just found the thread whilst surfing in bed. Got my PST just AFTER the venus transit, one of the first, with a thank you letter from Cornado for my patience. Great little scope, use it whenever I can. Always been a bit of a pig to get the 'best view' with the sweetspot and tuner, may have been a bit worse of late..... maybe the seeing or my eyes though.

Just checked the lens with a 5W LED torch.... front lens is a nice hazy pale green colour with what looks like a dense sprinkling of 'fine red sugar' in the middle section. (A "bloom" as it is known in the busuness) Yes, it is sick too.

94115, 1st up, top of the list!!

I'll be contacting the UK agents (Telescope House) ASAP to see what can be done. This one is pretty well gone. Will be nice to see what a fresh one looks like... better views hopefully.

Thanks for everyone who has posted on the various threads.... I'd have been oblivious otherwise.

Just letting everyone know my "sick" PST is back, after some initial trouble with the Meade rep not issuing a pick up, after saying he would, then not returning phone calls. It was picked up on Dec 7, the repair ticket was dated Dec 12&13, and it arrived back here on Dec 22, with a new IRG, and objective lense (clear blue type).

Just caught this thread too and quickly looked at my PST ser# 96969 and it has creeping rust pretty badly - I hadn't really looked at it recently that closely as I have it double-stacked, but I've been a bit disappointed with it, so maybe this is why. I'll definitely be contacting Coronado right away about this!

Good luck, PeterW. I sent my PST back to TH on October 10th and they expected it would take 2 months to ship to the USA, be repaired and return. I asked about sending it to Meade in Germany but they said no.
I contacted them last week and they said that they expected it to be in their next container from Meade in January. A bit galling when you see the short turn arounds which are being achieved now.

Got my recepit, so now to get my scope along to Tonbridge wells, much easier when I could go along to 63 Farringdon Road.

Lets hope I get a new one, with none of the problems, rather than a replacement front element that may need further fixing.

Cheers

WHy are UK people having to arrange their own shipping back to TH, and then that take 2+ more months to sort out via the USA. This is a sold at source defect, and a known and documented one at that, which should not require any additional cost to the end user.

Why do Meade have a European office if the scopes are being sent back to Irvine?

I could get mine back to the USA in 2 days using UPS, should I wish to risk the repair, and would expect it back within the same amount of time, after the repair, which should take a few days at most if the numbers are as small as Meade claim, so what's all this "2-3 months" rubbish all about?

I thought we paid a premium over here for the quality of service/warranty etc...clearly not the case.

Not a bash, just a question or two based on the facts presented

Nick,

Have you tried to contact Meade Europe at Rhede, Germany? They took care of my repairments twice and also shipping charges from and to Spain.

If you are located in UK I understand you should be supported by Meade Europe. They are not the fastest in fixing the problem, but it makes more sense to me rather than sending PST to the U.S.

Add 96325 to the list. I contacted Meade in early Dec, they arranged for UPS to pick up my PST on Dec. 15 at their cost. I recieved it back on Jan 8 with a new clear blue objective and ITF. I got a chance to try it yesterday and this morning and I am very pleased. The image is sharp, the sweet spot covers all of the Solar disk, no ghotsing at all and the bandwidth looks to be around 0.8A or less. Surface detail is easily visible. Much better then the original unit.

Julio

I am not having mine fixed...for other reasons, but my point was more the poor service level provided by the Uk supliers. We pay a massive premium here in the UK for Meade products, and for what?

Luckily I got both my PST and PST CaK in the USA, and thus did not pay this "premium" charge so that I could wait 2-3 months for my faulty "as sold at source" product to be fixed, and then sent back...., by a company who initailly stated (this is the UK reseller) that the problem "did not exist" and "people were making it up to get a new PST" - quote

I took mine to TH by hand recently, to make sure I knew what was going on etc. The delay is partially due to Coronado moving their operations and taking time to get back online again. The fix is actually very quick, just unscrew the end and replace with a new one and do a check with the sun. I believe that TH are trying to address this issue, I was told mine would take <1month, so fingers crossed.

Cheers

Well aren't you lucky!!
I sent mine to TH on Oct 10th and was told it would take 2 months. In mid-December, they said it would probably be in their next container from Meade, due in January. It is now over 3 months but I will give it another week.

Here's the latest list. I've added a couple new names & numbers, Thank you, Bruce, Adam, Bill, Joan & Dan!
I'm still wondering where the break between 100658 and 100706 is going to be. That's going to be the magic number to memorize.
Below that number it'll likely get the "dreaded rust" and above the number it's clean...

94115... the CN PST 'Grandfather' is back from the menders (minus the metal screw lens cover) with a nice clear blue lens. First look, nice and crisp, big swirling loops from the 2 sunspots. Getting used to the view and the tuner again.

94115- well and blue- PeterW SW London, UK.

Thanks to CN!

Hi Richard,

By Wayne being "not actually in the repair department" means that he does not actually DO the repairs but he is the proper person to call (among others) to arrange a repair. I made the original comment because I am not pleased with the repair department as it does not seem to me that they test anything. My PSTs came back to me with serious and obvious defects---the tuner won't turn?! I did not want to include Wayne in that group as I do not consider it his fault my PSTs have required multiple trips back to Meade.

I am not particularly pleased with being unable to get anything definitive from Wayne about the status of my PST---only that I "need to be patient". In my opinion, that's not the proper thing to tell a customer who has been dealing with defective product for 6 months. I've been patient.

Chris

My first unit was purchased at the ATT in Essen, Germany 2005. After a year the rustpromblem was noticble. That old PST had the goldcolor on the lens. # 097575.
My latest unit is the best...blue lens and the best contrast. # 101742.

So everybody keep your eyes peeled for Erika's PST!
If you see it for sale, call the cops, poleizi, gendarmes, and Scott Beith!
Then call Erika!

I'm starting to see something interesting in the list's data, so I isolated the group starting with 97491 and ending with 98670. It looks like Coronado (Coronado/Meade?) started to experiment with the coatings... I'm wondering, Emiel: How could you tell there was rust? Was it visible through the gold lens coating? Did you have to look at the lens from the side to see it? As the owner of a gold lens PST, I'm curious...

Hello Richard,
My PST had the same rust as manny others had shown with their pictures. Mine had the old school orange/gold peel on the objective. thirst it performed well, later on (after a year) the sky around the sun became redder and redder and a lot of lost contrast. now, my new one, has lots of contrast, good tunning in the middle and a large "sweetspot".

With a blue objective , it seems to have the same rust problem , but it's only noticeable after a real close inspection.

To the best of my knowledge the repair involves just unscrewing the top objective unit and then replacing it with a new one, the etalon is located much further down and I don't belive was touched.

Thanks

My repair authorization request experience to replace a rust defect PST lens was as follows. I called the Meade toll free customer service number (800) 626-3233. Other than an initial 25 minute wait on hold, once a customer service rep was on the line, it was basically a quick, pleasant, no-hassle, no-question, no-charge process to get a repair authorization number with a 3 week repair turnaround estimate. I am paying the outbound shipping; they are paying the return shipping. Basically, I felt good that Meade was standing behind the product of their acquired Coronado divison.

Initially I tried the Coronado toll free number and got no answer.

I believe that I can get us closer to determining when Coronado switched from the “gold” style of coating to the new “blue transparent” style. I own serial number 101339. It would seem that I own the first or second of the new blue transparent units produced. I hope this means that Coronado took extra care producing mine:)

Thank you, Dean!
Now we have a REALLY good handle on the gold to blue/transparent transition.
Still looking for folks with scopes near the blue to gold transition zone...

I think there must be more to it than that. Both of mine came back from their first trips in pretty bad shape---in both cases the tuners were weird---one barely did anyting and the other was so tight I could hardly turn it. So they must have to do more---I think they move the etalon further back when they change the objective or at least they have tune it or adjust to the different objective. At least that is my impression from how mine have been returned. They certainly weren't doing a courtesy tune up as both returned from their first visit in unusable condition.

I will list my serial numbers after they complete repairs...

Chris

RE: 96969 sick - CESDewar in Georgia
I sent my PST back to Meade for repair and it arrived there on 1/16. It came back repaired (Blue Objective) this past Monday. I took it out right away to look at the Sun but there was nothing much to see. At first I was worried it was not giving as contrasty a view, but SpaceWeather shows the sun to be blank with very low solar activity, so I'll wait for some more excitement to make a final judgement.

I just want to add that I really appreciate this thread and Meade stepping up to the plate to address this issue.

Hey guys,

The postman dropped me a present today. The PST has returned from Meade Germany. Actually they have replaced it under warranty.

So that's 100051 that can be taken from the list.

The new one has the clear blue objective.

Can't wait to try it out. Storms here at the moment though.

Fair play Meade Germany

Cheers,

Trev

When you can, could you post the new scopes #? I think you'll be very pleased with the new blue/transparent objective's performance. They seem to be the best of the 3 categories.

Bruce:
Repaired with a blue objective, I presume? Did your paperwork refer to etalon repair as well?

Richard,
On the notes it said, "replace objective lens + ITF tested clean optics. It has the clear blue objective. The tuning ring seems smoother and I now do not have to turn the ring near lock for the good stuff to show. It is now near the center of the tuning. I only had a few mins to check the view.

Ya know, I'll bet I'm wrong on a bunch of the items there, I've got it as "repaired with blue objective & ITF/etalon" because I thought that new etalons were being installed too. I'll bet that the etalons are only adjusted and NOT replaced on everybody's scope. It's starting to make more sense...
Whatta you all say out there? Do you have NEW etalons, or re-tuned ones?

I am going to guess mine (ITF/etalon) was adjusted by the notes from Meade. If the others can report what their paperwork said.

Thanks Rich for keeping this list.

I got my PST # 98569 back from Meade on 2/23/07 (took 30 days including shipping both ways). I had received it new from Astronomics on 9/20/05. This one had a minor case of "rust" but it was visible when compared to another, slighly newer PST. It came back with a clear blue lens & the tuning mechanism works better (closer to center of travel.) In the notes section it reads: " Replace objective lens + ITF TESTED clean optics"

Thanks, Joplin! I edited the latest list to show your scope. I'll bet that they are replacing the objectives and testing/tuning the ITFs and not replacing the ITFs. If I get a couple more confirmations of this I'll change ALL the references in the list to read accurately.
BTW, welcome to Cloudy Nights!
