I preordered my Single Pass from OPT on May 4th. Someone else also preordered the same scope from OPT and was told they were in the top 5 so I am assuming I am above that?

Hi Trever, I think you're talking about me. On May 19, I pre-ordered the LS60THa/B600 and I was told I was #8 in the queue. So, you should be somewhere between #1 and #7. In any case, I changed my order to the B1200 filter and I'm somewhere in the top 10. When I called OPT to order, the OPT sales person counted the pre-orders each time. You can probably call them up and get a more accurate idea of where you are in the queue.
And don't forget to order the Tele Vue Sol-Searcher. It fits on top of the clamshell mount and there's a cut out in the case for it.

Hi Ralph and Al, it sounds like a plan! Al, I briefly owned a orange tube C8 over 15 years ago. I sold it when I left the hobby not soon after. I really wish I kept it. It really had superb optics. Scott, join the fun. It's probably worth coming over to look through a 200mm solar scope.

I have a funny feeling that I may not be receiving mine until later on this year. I called OPT and they were not able to find what place in line I was when I reserved my order. They had changed their system so that may have changed my place in line. So far, they have yet to call me and let me know.

Trever did you speak with a manager? Try getting hold of Vincent Giordano. He's the assistant floor manager. All orders are dated so I doubt you'll lose your place in the queue. Good thing you pre-ordered. In the Lunt group, Markus stated that pre-orders are increasing and it will take until Spring 2009 to fulfill all pre-orders.

Can't wait until I hear a first light report. The Feathertouch will be a fine upgrade. Did you also consider upgrading to the B1200 blocking filter?

Hi Trever, It is very easy to switch our the blocking filter sizes. If you decided to upgrade to the B1200 that should not change your position on the list. Please let your dealer know and we can revise the order. Thanks, Rikki Hocking

So are you saying that if one gets the feather-touch upgrade, it puts you ahead of folks who chose the standard focuser?
I ordered the same LS60T50DS w/B1200 from OPT on April 26th, and when I emailed them, about a week or so ago, to ask what my position on the order list, I was told I was #20 out of 47. At the time I ordered, there was no feather-touch option even mentioned.

Just wondering what numbers are being produced and shipped. I've asked, but dealers don't know how many they are getting, so they can't tell if they can fill all the pre-orders, or how long it will take to fill the already pre-order list.

Yes, I ordered from OPT. I typically order online and Rayna usually handles my orders. In an email conversation with her a couple of weeks ago (19th) she said that Lunt is now offering a Feathertouch upgrade to their scopes for an additional charge of $220, and that it will not have an effect on the delivery time. I added the FT to my order at that time. From this, it doesn't sound like the FT should affect the delivery time one way or the other. I doubt anyone at OPT would tell you something just to make a sale... they have always done good business with me. Keeping up with pre-orders is probably confusing, I suspect that different people may not be looking at the same waiting list.
In any case, I'm sure that Lunt and all their distributors, including OPT, are working hard to get the products out to us as quickly as possible. I'm just working on being patient.

A question for anyone who has upgraded to a Feather Touch...
Based on what Marcus tells us, the stock focuser on the 60mm is not a bad (cheap) focuser. I believe the value of this focuser is just under $200. The Feather Touch that you get when you upgrade has a value of about $325 and will cost you an additional $220. So why not just make the change out after you receive the scope? It would cost you a total of $100 more but you would have 2 focusers...and I could use one of them on my C 80mm ED.

So the million dollar question is... Have units been shipped to the dealers yet? I'm hearing conflicting information on this regard. I'm next in line to get the LS50F and it sounds like Teton Telescopes already got one. So I'm wondering if these have gone out and I'm bumming or a bigger shipment is out or will go out soon. I was good for 5 months, but now I'm getting anxious.

Admit it, Al....you're just looking for an excuse to tinker with it! ============================================================ Nope...I don't enjoy tinkering unless there's a worthwhile reason to tinker. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
All kidding aside, I don't see the sense in this upgrade unless I'm missing something. Please fill me in.

Well, one advantage seems to be that if you choose the feather-touch upgrade, you move ahead on the list of people waiting for the non-feather-touch models

Teton based their advertising, I believe, on the idea that they had the largest "allocation" from Lunt...or something like that. I have the same 50mm and adapter ordered from them and they don't seem to be getting anything much either. So, my approach is to just not worry about it, since there is nothing that can be done except wait at this point. When they build 'em, they will come.

Actually, if you phone up Rikki and whisper the secret password, she will bump your order up to the top of the list.
What's the secret password?? I'm not tellin'.
Seriously, people--I am 100% positive that the Lunt folks are doing their utmost to get an orderly flow of new products out to all of the people who have ordered them, on as timely a basis as they can manage without cutting any corners. No need to push, shove, or look for secret ways to improve your position in line. Chill.
Of course, I have already upgraded my order to the new lavender powder-coated tube, with stylish nickel-plated accents. They're producing those first, and besides, it matches my livingroom decor.

Additionally, the 50mm filter has a built in Sun Seeking Gremlin option available. The Gremlin mounts to the filter assembly and always points his tail at the Sun. 2 Years of Purina Gremlin Chow comes with it and it only adds 5 years to the delivery date, due to breeding delays.

I just ordered a LS60T/Ha B600 this afternoon from OPT without the upgrade and I'm #9 on the list without the upgrade. Keith said it may not be until November before I see my scope which is fine as it is going to be a Christmas present for the bride. And yes...it is something she actually asked for!

I took the plunge as well though I ordered the LS60TDS w/ BF1200. I figure it will be a while before I see it, but I am not in any real hurry. I was going to Russia for the eclipse but plans fell through so I am enjoying the clear (ish) Colorado evenings and playing with my nightime scope for now.

I understand completely, Dan. I bought that ED80 for Paul for his birthday one year. I think he may have gotten a chance to use it a few times before I talked him into "upgrading" to a 66SD for his astro-imaging. So, um, the ED80 is mine now. Anyway, congrats on the new Lunt scope for the bride. May you have many clear days to share with her and the scope.
Jim, sure, blame it on the cats!

I want to use my Denk. bino's and they are really heavy with eyepieces. If I remember the Lunt had a compression ring. I'm starting to lean towards the FT, because I know it could support a lot of weight, not sure of the 10-1.

I just ordered a 60DS/1200 with upgrade and its for me and nobody else. I'm somewhere around the 20's, but I have 2 Ha scopes and the Sun is been very quiet, so I can wait with the rest of the group. I deceided to upgrade because of the ability to support more weight when using bino's.

Today I contacted OPT and was told that they will receive their first Lunt shipment in November or December. I hope it isn't true but OPT has always given me reliable information. It seems Lunt has quite a backlog of orders. Oh well, I can wait and may even upgrade to a dual-stack.

When I spoke to Rikki this week she expects to ship LS50Fs everyday for a while and Cak products very soon. I asked when I should save up the rest of the money for my LS60TDS50 and she said I was in the first production run and she expected to be shipping by the end of Aug or beginning of September.

In May I was told US Distributors would be shipped orders in June. In June I was told in the next 2 weeks US dealers would be getting orders. Surely a company can estimate their production capabilities once they are up and running. I would like to know so I can make plans. I would most likely upgrade if I have 6-8 months or more to pay. I was counting on having to come up with the funds in June or July.

I think you're misreading.
It's not surprising that Markus would be among the first to receive shipments, but I doubt that all of the first shipments are Europe-bound. My take on Markus's posts is simple: Lunt is now shipping!

I wont print the email here as I realize that is against CN policy....
But Vincent of OPT informed me that they are scheduled for a demo of the Lunt scopes at their Star Party on the 19th of July. If all goes as planned after that, they should receive their first shipments by the end of the month or next month sometime. If there are factory delays, then the first shipments could take as long as November or December.
I guess that is the way things go in business I suppose. I will see what happens in the next several weeks into August. Obviously this has nothing to do with other telescope dealers so they may be in a better situation. If it still looks like that there might be delays, then I might consider the PST before the sale runs out.

There have been some decent buys on coronado products in the used market recently. You might want to look in that direction to hold you over until your Lunt shows up. I did.

I guess I was wanting to really use it during the Summer when I was out of school and had the cash. But since it is looking like there are delays, I may just keep most of the cash and get either a used PST or a new one on reserve. The reserve for the PST shouldnt take 6 months.

Hi Everybody,
I am new into solar observing and I am considering buying
a Double Stack LS60HaDP with the BP1200.
I want to do both visual , bino and Photography work (with Canon EOS 40D).
Before I plunk the dough on this maybe someone can help me with someof questions.
1) Does the FT upgrade come with a 1.25" adapter?
2) is the second Etalon easily detached from the first etalon for prominence work - and after I remount the second etalon do I have to have a lot of experience for realigning and fine tuning ?
3) what is the focal length on the LS60THaDS ? The lunt site says 500mm but adorama website says 1200mm
Thanks for your help

The second etalon is only 50mm in diameter and unscrews from the front of the scope. Re-alligning it should not be hard but until they ship some we don't know. The focal length is 500mm.

I had to cancel my preorder and go with the PST due to financial reasons. Too many things like tuition and bills are hitting me rather hard right now so I am lucky to be able to get that.
It disappoints me, but oh well. Im getting used to that lately.....

Have you had a chance to use it yet, or to compare it to any older SolarMax 90’s? I’ve been wondering how well these new Coronado products that are apparently now being manufactured/assembled in Mexico would compare to the older products produced in Tucson and Irvine.

Well, I don't know where it was assembled. I own a stacked PST also and I can tell you the difference between the two is certainly breathtaking. It seems to deloiver as promised. I can't say much for the draw tube focuser, but the rest of it is awesome.

Thanks and congratulations on the new scope. Yes, I have a DS PST also and there is no comparison between it and my Solar Spectrum 0.2A or my Solarscope DS 60’s. Still, the PST does give some nice views and is very convenient. I enjoy it primarily for the convenience of leaving it set up on a photo tripod for quick looks when I don’t have a chance to use the other scopes.

Hi Trevor, I want to assure everyone our first shipments are not going to be in Nov or Dec. We have already shipped some LS60TCaK, LS50FHa and LS60THa last week and have been shipping LS50FHa this week so far. Vince might be talking about new orders place today do have quite a long wait. OPT will be seeing there first shipments very soon. We did make the first shipment to Markus at Lunt Europe. The European dealers were the first to place orders and had some shows coming up. We are trying to ship everyday so please be patiant. We are working very hard here in Tucson and we know that everyone is very excited. Thank You, Rikki Hocking Lunt Solar Systems

Good evening all,
Here's some news that may help:
Today I called the vendor from whom I ordered a LS60TCaK (named withheld on purpose) and asked about the status of the order. The rep told me that the payment went out to Lunt 3 weeks ago and a call would be made to find out details. An hour later I got a call back that said:
--> I was #2 on their list for the LS60TCaK. --> The first units should be here within 2 weeks, earlier if we're lucky.
I was tempted to cancel the order since I have since located a Solarmax 70CaK (stuck in customs as we speak!) but hey, I'm #2. That's hard to give up!
So, there you go. Let's hope this time it's for real.
Blue skies,
Marc

Rikki,
Thanks for this update, however I note that we have been promised Ha scopes for quite some time, April, May, June, July and nothing has yet turned up. Lunt may be working very hard in Tucson and burning the candle at both ends, scopes may have been shipped to Europe, but so far as I know, nobody yet has an Lunt Ha filter or scope in their hands.
My suggestion of a question mark was slightly tongue in cheek, but the reality is that Lunt have not managed to keep to a single one of their stated dates up to now. Will we see people with solar scopes in July or can I add August to the list?
Lunt have created a lot of interest in their products, they seem innovative and well priced. Great, we need appropriate competition in this area, but after you created the buzz, problems have appeared leading to significant delays.
Other people may think that 'these things happen', well my view is that these issues are not something that can be shrugged off. For Lunt to very publicly announce these scopes and then, literally at the last second find out that it was very difficult (impossible?) to manufacture the double pass system to the tolerances required, smacks of poor planning and incredible optimism in your ability to deliver. What else have you been over-optimistic about? What other problems are out there waiting to be found?
I'm sorry to be blunt, but Lunt created this interest on the Internet using Cloudy Nights and Yahoo Groups, this cuts both ways, you publicly issue dates, you deliberately get people excited and when you get it wrong, you publicly get the hassle.
The scopes from Lunt will have to be very good indeed to overcome the scepticism that now exists in the market place.

Rob

Ralph,
I'm not familiar with Burgess Optical so cannot comment. I would say that just because other people sometimes over-promise and under-deliver, that does not excuse this occasion.
Perhaps if more people made a fuss about these problems, companies might think twice before announcing things they cannot deliver (unless pigs do fly AND I win the lottery twice in a row).
I pose the question, are we too accommodating of companies who get things wrong? They may pay a financial penalty (they don't get the sales they forecast when they forecast) and some embarrassment. Do we seem to forgive and forget too quickly?

Rob

Rob Thanks for the warning but I have already plonked the dough. Somehow I trust the folks at Lunt (gut feeling). The delivery date is not critical for me as much as the price and quality. Additionally, as the Lunt reputation and entire bussiness depend on what they will ship out to us, I dont think they can afford to dump any lemons on us. The fact that they are willing to change the design of the DP scopes after finding out they did not like the performance and absorb the expense of adding a second etalon -is IMHO a good sign and shows their good intentions.
So, let's hope for the best

My personal take on this, is that Lunt were obviously optimistic and confident in their original plans. Marketing and sales people obviously have a job to do in terms of promoting products, and in this case, they have done an exceptional job, given that they are now back ordered to 2009.
Working for a major multinational company who have had this very problem on more than one occasion, I know what the issues can be. When you work in R&D, the tech leads, devs, project managers etc, will always be under pressure to get the product out on time, but the test/QA guys, if they are doing their job right, will do their utmost to ensure that the product, when it is shipped is perfect. I have literally blocked the release of multi million dollar projects on more than one occasion due to technical issues, and a recent project I worked on, which was announced last summer, is still not quite shipping, even though it was slated for last August.
I think us "Brits" are somewhat more sceptical than people on the sunnier side of the pond, and are more willing to vent our frustrations when things don't go quite right..perhaps it's a cultural thing, or the fact that our weather is so bad...we just like a good old moan from time to time :-)
If Markus, et al, are now shipping products, then they ARE shipping products, so the ball is rolling. If dealers have delays due to huge back orders, I am sure that a quick call to someone like Rikki will get you an honest answer to the time scale in which your order will be shipped. It is in nobody's interests to lie, and so far, from the posts I have seen from Adam, Rikki and Markus, they have done their utmost to give people the truth, as they knew it at that specific time. Things change on a daily basis in development, one day...you're "good to go", then you find a showstopper. With solar products, a showstopper could be extremely serious, or could be something which, if they shipped with it, would lead to negative comments, and, ergo, do harm to the brand and company.
I am personally looking at a new CaK solution for 2009, possibly a large CaK solution (200mm), so this has a lot of personal interest for me, and I have been following the story since almost day 1.
Having spoken to Markus, he gives me the impression that quality is not something he is prepared to compromise on, and I hope that his now translates in to exciting products for the solar community.
I have to confess with being one of the sceptics, and being somewhat frustrated myself with this situation, but, a time for reflection and realisation that I work with the same problems myself every day, has made me sit back and think "it will come"

Ralph,
I have stated before in a number of forums that I have plonked down cash for two solar scopes, a 60mm single pass and a 60mm double pass, now double stack. My position on this is clear and has never been hidden.
I take offence at the accusation of being a 'spoiler'. You are welcome to disagree with me and I have no problems with that, I put my views on line and recognise it cuts both ways, you are welcome to state opposing views. But please do not accuse me of a private agenda to cause problems for Lunt. I have no connection with any telescope company whatsoever, either formally or informally. I used to own a PST but no longer do so. My views are my own and nobody else's. Where companies are good (IMHO) I state so, when they fall below par I also state so.
In previous posts, both publicly and in private to Lunt, I state that I want Lunt to succeed, I really do. Meade/Coronado have a cosy ride and I welcome the introduction of Lunt into this market. It may well shake the market up which is a good thing.
However Lunt have generated a demand by publicly stating what they are going to do, Lunt have driven this demand based on their advertising and their personal statements, not me, not another supplier, and they have consistently failed to deliver what they said they would do. I understand there are production problems, these things happen, but to discover significant production issues in March/April necessitating a whole new approach indicates a level of optimism over their capability to deliver which is surprising.
I am amazed that people accept these sort of issues and think it's OK.
As I said before, you are welcome to disagree with me, that is your right, but please do not accuse me of being a spoiler.
-------------------- Thanks,
Rob

Dear Rob I humbley apologize as a Plonker down of cash you are more than justified in griping and stating your opinion. The only reason that I do not gripe is that I take most of what I hear from Germany with a large grain of salt.I also do not think that many people would gamble on $5,500.00 as I have on a DS200mm scope sight unseen,I have ultimate faith in Andy Lunt after all it is his name on the product. Again I am sorry nothing personal.
