Need some help & or advice. Just set up with my LS50Fha and am not getting an single image when viewed thru the eyepiece. It looks like about 10 images stacked behind one another. I couln't take a half way decent shot so I did a drawing of it. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks much .

Hi Rich
deffinately call Lunt straight away something doesnt seem right here. Have you tried different eyepieces? and are you using barlows or any other optical device? rich best www.bestastroimages.co.uk

Is the blocking filter in place and intact?
I've had a few "oops!" while changing over cameras etc. during sessions, neglecting to reinstall the BF... multiple images are typical without one.

Yes, I have tried different ep's and the blocking filter looks fine. I've tried different barlows with and with out the lens just using the tube length and it dosn't help.

Is there any play in the BF diagonal, is it tilted at all in the drawtube ? Is the filter/filter adaptor fitted so that it is perfectly in line with the refractor optics ? Probably best to give Lunt a call as Richard says if all of the above are OK.

sounds and looks like multiple ghosting, but best to contact Lunt on this one to see what they can do.

Multiple ghost images are a sign that two surfaces are not perfectly parallel. This type of ghosting is common in inexpensive interference filters were the layers are not perfectly uniform in thickness and form a wedge and/or the faces of the glass are not parallel. A simple test you can do is with the Etalon and BF installed on the 'scope and while observing the Sun, rotate the Etalon and see if the images moves with it. - Dave

Thanks all for the input. The image does move when I rotate the Etalon. Also the fine tuning brass wheel make no difference in the image when rotated either way. Attached is an afocal shot (not a great one) that shows the image repeating itself.

Hey man, This is probably a dumb question but have you removed the eyepiece tube from the blocking filter and then put a csmera tight up to it to see if you are just not reaching focus?

That IMHO is not a focus problem, that's a ghosting issue, which I have seen on an SM40 after de-contacting (very similar in fact). Possibly just got mishandled in shipping..

I agree Nick it does look like a ghosting problem caused by a misaligned etalon but before he sends annything back for repairs I just thought maybe this would give a better idea what the problem is. I have the same size refractor nd a CaK blocking filter from LUNT that would not reach focus on it.
By the way Nick, Greg P. and Larry Alvarez, I am doing a big presentation on the History of Solar observing for my Astronomy Club and was wondering if it would be OK to use some of your images. I'm good, but you guys are way better.

Stephen
It would be a real honour thank you for asking, and yes..
On the "cannot reach focus"...what gives with that?
I am considering a Lunt CaK module with the B1200 for my FL102, and want to make sure that should work okay?

Hmm...I have a Meade 5000 series APO at the moment on loan, that thing has masses of focus travel I thought.

Just spoke with Rikki over at Lunt. She advised me to sent it back and they will repair the filter. I had also mentioned to her that when I shook the filter ther was a slight ratteling noise inside. She told me that there should be no type of ratteling within the filter. Another two thumbs up for Lunt

Ouch!
My Lunt came packed in its foam-lined case, which was in a larger box with enough foam peanuts to feed my foam elephant for a week! Everything was undamaged, thankfully....but I guess it's not always possible to "gorilla-proof" a package with delicate optics.
I'll bet that Lunt has to cover the repair/replacement themselves; I doubt that UPS will take any responsibility.
I hope that the repair is simple and quick, and that the return shipping is gentle, this time. Good luck!

Hi Jim, My Lunt also arrived double boxed with peanuts but with no case. Rikki over at Lunt told me they would only have it there for a week and ship it back. I had mentioned to her that Coronado would insist on UPS next day air as they would pay more attention to detail with those packages. I sent it out today UPS 3rd day and told Lunt when ready to ship it back to me UPS next day. Good luck with yours hopefully you can post some images in the next couple days.

Errr...that would require three things currently in short supply here: (1) Sunshine, (2) free time at work, and (3) imaging skills!
Before too very long, though, I promise I'll try my luck at some afocals....perhaps those won't be too much of a stretch for my limited intellect.
I sure do love all the images you guys post here!
Cheers,
Jim
